it says it is:
The USA Today Division I-AA Final Top 25 college football coaches poll, with number of first-place votes, record in parentheses, total points.so I don't think this is the preseason coaches poll.

Looks like they picked based on teams not having changed from last year versus a 2006 reality prediction......

They are one in the same. Or at least every year in the past they are the same thing. It said it was updated on August 23, 2006 and it looks just like copies I have kept of each year's pre-season poll at this same site.

Hey, the two sites will eventually have the exact same poll. I don't know if the one I first sited has been updated, except that previous to me checking it this week it did not say updated August 23, 2006 (it said January 2006). So, hey it may or may not be correct. When the Coaches poll comes out (if this isn't the correct one) then both sites will have the same poll.

You misunderstood or I didn't make myself clear. I meant to say that every year the Coaches Poll on the Sports Illustrated Site and the ESPN Coaches Poll on the ESPN site are one in the same.

As I said, I do not know wheather the first site I posted is truly updated or not, but is does say "updated August 23, 2006." It could be that the poll listed at the site I first gave a link for is a rehash of last years ending Coaches Poll (even though it says Updated Aug. 23, 2006).

So, to make myself clear. Whatever poll is eventually listed on the Sports Illustrated site and the ESPN Coaches Poll site will be "one in the same" if this year is like every year in the last 10 years.

Ok Homer xlolx Are there 6 teams in the A-10 better than the best of the Patriot or SWAC? That's questionable.

The GWFC will either prove it on the field with very tough OOC matches, or at least one or two will fall out. Enjoy '06 guys, soon all the GWFC schools will be eligible, and take up more spots in the playoffs :smiley_wi

I gotta admit the Mid Major's work the propaganda war better than anyone else. I would not be upset to see San Diego as a playoff opponent for UD. We could then test the 4 to 3 validity.

I guess the PL coaches were able to get some votes for San Diego. I would like to see a mid major that schedules tough get a shot in the playoffs. San Diego however doesn't fit THAT profile with their D-3 and NAIA opponents.

This always makes me wonder how other schools refer to themselves in their home state. For instance, in Iowa, you will NEVER hear someone call us Northern Iowa. That is just...weird. You always say UNI. The only time students here Northern Iowa is on formal resumes or documents or explaining to some unfamilar person what the initials stand for. xlolx

But yeah, it is odd seeing schools usually referred to their initials (USC, UCLA, and in this case UC-Davis) being called their full name.

But the schools name is California-Davis.
Before you pop off with something, you need to know what you are talking about. As has been discussed several times before, there are three tiers to the college and university system in California. The higest academic level is the UC system (University of California). The main campus for the University of California is UC Berkeley, also known athletically as California, or Cal. The other members of the UC system are designated by the cities in which they are located (or near in the case of UC Santa Barbara, which is actually in the town of Goleta), such as UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine or UC San Diego (not to be confused with the I-AA program San Diego, which is a private school). There are a number of UC campuses. The UC campuses are also very research oriented. There is also a tier known as the California State system, which is geared towards educating the masses and is more cost effective than the more expensive UC system. These schools are officially known as Cal State (fill in the blank for the city in which the campus is located), such as Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge (a one-time member of the Big Sky before dropping football), or Cal State Bakersfield. Some schools refer to themselves athletically without the CS in front of the name, like Fresno State (my alma mater), or Sacramento State, even though the official name is California State University, Fresno (that's what my diploma reads) or California State University Sacramento. There are also a pair of special schools known as California State Polytechnic University in San Luis Obispo and Pomona, that are outstanding in such fields as engineering and science. The third part of the system in California is the community college system, which provides a low-cost, but good educational alternative for students who either want to pursue a techinical, or vocational education, or want to transfer to one of the four-year schools in the CS, or UC systems. With that explanation in mind, the name California Davis is no more appropriate than refering to the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) as Cal Los Angeles, or UC Santa Barbara as Cal Santa Barbara (as some inappropriately do). The educational system in California is somewhat complex, but once you understand the differences, it is easier to understand why alumni of certain schools are adament in having their schools refered to in a specific way.

I seem to remember reading that it had something to do with the SWAC being split into divisions and having a title game between the divisions.

And then there is the Bayou Bowl thing.

Don't put it all on the NCAA.

Doc

Let's go over this AGAIN, real slowly. The SWAC's autobid was removed when Alabama State joined the league due to their unavailability becuz of the Turkey Day Classic and GSU/SU 's Bayou Classic. The removal of the autobid had nothing to do with the formation of the two divisions.
The Expansion and two divisions in the SWAC was simply a case of the SWAC doing what was in the best interest of the SWAC.

So let's get this straight with a simple question: Who removed the autobid, the SWAC or the NCAA?

Well then that means we never excused ourselves either did we? Why is this such an issue Ralph? Has any team from the SWAC ever refused an invite?

Think about what you just confirmed! According to you, the SWAC never had an autobid...so Grambling and Southern should have moved the BC and sit and "wish"/"hope" the NCAA choose us for the playoffs! Not smart business sense if you ask me.

My feelings on the SWAC participation has been stated here and on TSPN. As long as the stipulation that the NCAA gets a minimum bid of $30K or 75% of the NET receipts (which means that even if it's a loss at the gate the NCAA goes away with pockets lined), then I strongly object to Grambling participating.

The revenue of the BC has been reported to be anywhere from $750K-$1M per school. A game of such magnitude and appeal that even moving it from New Orleans due to Katrina couldn't hamper the revenue for both schools. Are we to risk moving it so that we MIGHT get an NCAA bid which allows us to pay the NCAA a minimum of $30K.

Grambling Stadium seats approx 19,500 fans. If we have a capacity crowd at $20 per our Gross Receipts will be $390K. I don't know what would be subtracted to arrive at NET receipts but let's put the figure at $10K...which calculated the net receipts at $380K. 75% of that is $285K.

Please correct me if my math is incorrect!!!!! I'm anxious to know what creative math is being used to justify being pimped that way. Hell, I see why those other schools don't have a playoffs...even the non-BCS schools.

So the playoff discussion is really moot because I doubt that Grambling and SU will ever change the date of the Bayou Classic (Unless the pay incentive was there).

But let's continue the discussion about the payout. Can you refute my numbers or would the NCAA receive the $285K as mentioned in my "scenario".

That couldn't be true, there was several years that two teams represented the SWAC in the playoff and both weren't at large. Clarifying my statement, Thats prior to HB and SCG.

I compared the SWAC standings to the NCAA fields from 1990 on (couldnt find standings prior to 1990) And on 6 occasions a SWAC team participated in the playoffs after having finished either 1st or 2nd in the SWAC. 1990 Jackson State (8-4), 1992 Alcorn State (7-4), 1994 Alcorn State (8-3-1), 1995 Jackson State (9-3), 1996 Jackson State (10-2) and 1997 Jackson State (9-3). In none of those seasons did a second team from the SWAC participate.

I counted 18 playoff appearances since 1978 for the SWAC including 12 by Jackson State. And in only 1985 did I see two SWAC teams in the same field. From 1978 til 1997 when the SWAC had there last playoff appearance, a team from the SWAC participated every season except 1979 and 1983. That would lead me to think they did have an automatic bid.

On some occasions the 2nd place team participated in the playoffs while the first place team participated in a BOWL game.

I would come to the educated guess that perhaps the SWAC did have a automatic bid at one point, and perhaps the NCAA having been passed up by the conference champion on more then one occasion for other more profitable games removed the auto bid.

Playoff Appearances for SWAC teams.

Jackson State (12) 1978, 81,82,85,86,87,88,89,90,95,96,97
Alcorn State (3) 1984,92,94
Grambling State (2) 1980,85
Alabama State (1) 1991

1980 and 1994 show as years with co-champs when only one went to the playoffs. In those years did the co-champ team that won the regular season head-to-head game go to the playoffs?

1980 - Yes. Grambling won the head to head and had a conference record of 5-1-0 and a overall record of 10-1-0. Jackson State, while 5-1-0 in conference play only had an overall record of 8-3-0. GSU was awarded an at-large bid to the playoffs, JSU was not.

1994 - No. Grambling won the head to head and played in the Bayou Classic and Heritage Bowl. Alcorn State was awarded an at-large bid to the playoffs.

1978 and 1997 show as years that the conference champ did not go the playoffs. Why?

1978 - JSU had a better overall record. Conference champ Grambling State had conference record of 5-0-1 and a overall record of 9-1-1. Grambling's last game was a 31-7 regular season loss to FAMU. Jackson State, while 5-1-0 in conference play had an overall record of 10-1-0 and was awarded an at-large bid to the playoffs.

1997 - The conference champ was Southern and they played in the Bayou Classic and Heritage Bowl. Jackson State was awarded an at-large bid to the playoffs

Grambling also participated in a game against Arkansas State...not sure of the exact year though. It was sometimes in the early to mid 80's. We lost 10-7 in Jonesboro, Ark. In each of our loses...all by less than a touchdown, we were the road team. We couldn't afford the $30K minimum bid guarantee or the 75% of Net Receipt payoff! xcoffeex

Is this the new SWAC excuse??? We were the road team. UNI was the road team for most of their playoff run in 2005 and JMU won the NC without ever playing at home.

A $30,000 minimum??????

10,000 fans paying $3.00 covers that. Certainly Grambling should be able to cover those numbers.

No it was for informational purposes only... but feel free to take it as you will. The $30K minimum I have no problem with. Please make every attempt to find where I did. And yes, Grambling could easily cover that with what we make at the Classic's Battle of the Band. My problem is with the 75% net receipt requirement.

So no excuse is needed...not from Grambling. We have never rejected a bid to the NCAA playoffs...even with the 75% requirement. Don't put that one on Grambling. It was me PERSONALLY that thinks it's a rip off by the NCAA. You don't ...that's your perogative. xidiotx

UNHWildcat,

As an alumnus of UCD, UC Davis, and/or the University of California at Davis (all appropriate names), I can tell you 100% that Cal-Davis is WRONG!!! How are you able to tell me I'm wrong? I don't get it.

None of this explains how in 84-85 and 89 two SWAC teams got in the playoffs. I promise you one got an autobid and the other was atlarge.

None of this explains how in 84-85 and 89 two SWAC teams got in the playoffs...Each year both teams were highly ranked?

1984 was a 12 team playoff and 1. Alcorn St. and 5. MVSU were chosen
1985 was a 12 team playoff and 8. Grambling and 15. Jackson St. were chosen
1989 was a 16 team playoff and 13. Grambling and 17. Jackson St. were chosen

Ralph, I remember those years like yesterday and I can tell you only the lower rated SWAC team recieved an invite atlarge. If you look at 89 it proves my points noway in hell did the committee take a SWAC team, that was not in the top 16 unless one recieved an Autobid. The higher ranked team may not have been the SWAC champ, or they could have been Co-champs. The Champ(head to head) might have secured the at large bid and the runner up got the autobid which is how I remember it happening.

Acutally, whether you are correct on the SWAC having had an autobid or not, the NCAA would take a team that was rated 17 or lower for reasons not always understood by others. Polls were not always used to determine who was taken in the playoffs as at large bids. In fact, the NCAA rated teams 1-16 according to their system, not anyone else's system This meant that on many ocassions teams ranked lets say in the Coaches I-AA poll below 16 were ranked or seeded in the top 10 for the playoffs.

The only time I know of this happening is, when the SWAC and the IVY League have a team or teams ranked ahead of 17, 18 and 19.

Furthermore, The SWAC was one of the premier 1-AA conferences from the playoffs inception. Why then would the SWAC be the only conference to not have an autobid from day one?

This could also happen if a conference doesn't have a team in the top 16 but does have a autobid available to it.

If its last years poll why does it not reflect last years records and why would it be updated for 8-25-06.

because at the beginning of the thread there is the link to the poll, which says . .

The USA Today Division I-AA Final Top 25 college football coaches poll, with number of first-place votes, record in parentheses, total points.

It is exactly the same as last year's poll. It is probably dated recently since it was reposted for the start of this season.

you can compare against this release from last December.

Just googled the ESPN USA Today Coaches Poll, according to espn.com it looks like this year's first poll doesn't come out until week 4, I don't know if that's before or after.
