Offseason Project?

In between the semis and the national championship game, I had an idea for something to keep occupied with FCS football for a while. Initially, I dismissed this notion as a side effect of the drinking I do to cope with the North Dakota winters, but it has recurred at least twice since then, so I figure what the hell.

I haven't bothered to do any research to see if this has been brought up before, but I'd to create a running list of the Unofficial FCS Champions and the length of their reign, somewhat equivalent to this idea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unofficial_Football_World_Championships

Rules:

1. First champion is crowned with Florida A&M defeating Massachusetts in 1978.
2. A team that has the crown cannot lose it to a team outside its division (i.e. FBS, DII, DIII, and NAIA losses don't hurt you)
3. Regular season and playoff matchups are both opportunities to lose the title.
4. If it happens that a team acquires the Unofficial FCS Champion crown then moves divisions, the title reverts to the team who was last defeated by the victorious team.

Somewhere I've started trying to dig through various media guides and have a half-assed attempt going. I'll post that later tonight. The danger in that, though, is that one mistake throws the whole list off.

Thanks for the props, but looking at table used as an example in the beginning, you still gotta break down the number of days the team held the title (no small feat in itself) and the number of games they played as champ, so it isn't entirely finished. Just got you off to a good start.

Thanks for catching that, I'll fix it now. And yes, I noticed that Wofford held it for 6 days, but I figured people would be interested in everyone who only held the "title" for a week. A lot of teams are champs multiple times, but held the title for only a week those times.

I also noticed several years where the 1AA/FCS champ at the end of the year did not hold the title at the end of the year (the team that held the title didn't make the playoffs, so they rolled over to the next season still the champ) so I thought it would be interesting to see who finished each season as the actual champ next to the unofficial champ. I remembered one and, in checking on him, I found several more possibilities. Fred Stokes (Ga. Southern) was on the 1991-92 Washington Redskins team. Also on that team were the following who attended current or former FCS/I-AA schools. People with more knowledge and more time than I have can go back and determine whether these guys' schools were FCS/I-AA when they attended. They were: Gary Clark (James Madison), Monte Coleman (Central Arkansas), Danny Copeland (Eastern Kentucky), A.J. Johnson (Texas State), Markus Koch (Boise State), Charles Mann (Nevada), Mark Schlereth (Idaho), Ed Simmons (Eastern Washington). I don't know if the roster I looked at was from the beginning of the year or from the Super Bowl, so some of these guys may or may not have actually been on the team at the time of the SB.

There were also the following from schools that I think were DII or DIII or NAIA at that time: Ralph Tamm (Westchester), Stephen Hobbs (North Alabama), Darrell Green (Texas A&M - Kingsville), and John Brandes (Cameron).

Who are the FCS/D-IAA players that have hoisted the Lombardi Trophy?

Okay, I finished through the 1987 season on my lunch break. I'll have to get the rest when I get home, haha. So... to meet the parameters the player would have to play for a team that won the Super Bowl after 1979 (1AA started in 1978, players graduating that year would have been picked in the April 1979 NFL Draft). They have to be shown on the official roster for the NFL team that won the Super Bowl that year. The team would have to be in FCS/1AA the year immediately before he graduated/was drafted/signed a FA deal, for example Youngstown State was D2 in 1980, so if they played in from 1978 to 1981, the player is okay because he was there in 1981... But if a team was 1AA and dropped to D2 or moved up to 1A before he left, if even for just his final season, they don't count. Remember that the team won the Super Bowl in the following calendar year, for example 1980 Oakland Raiders won the Super Bowl in January 1981.

This would more than double the number of former FCS players to go on to the NFL Hall of Fame. Since 1AA/FCS started in 1978, only two players who finished their college careers playing for a 1AA/FCS team went on to make the NFL Hall of Fame... Name them.
