Davidson does not play SoCon football at this time....
ETSU would still be in the SoCon....for 26 more days.

Western Carolina has never won a title? Ever?

The 8 for Georgia Southern has been since 1993 (sorry I had to be THAT guy.)

Davidson won a SoCon title (granted in the 1960's) in football and they are a current member of the conference, so for the purpose of my study, it counts.

ETSU, WCU, and Elon (albeit only 2 seasons) have never won a SoCon title in football. Western finished 2nd three times in the 80's.

...they almost had a title in 1983 (Furman 6-0-1, WCU 5-0-1), but apparently Davidson only played 5 SoCon teams that year (not paying VMI and WCU) and lost all 5 games.

Then they were 1/2 game behind Chattanooga in 1984 (UofC 5-1, WCU 5-2)...that was an odd year...9 teams, nobody played all 8, two schools played 7 games, 5 schools played 6 games, and 2 schools (VMI and Davidson) only played 5 games. ...and people complain about the schedule now with ETSU gone! ;)

...and finally, in 1986 ASU finished 6-0-1 and WCU was 5-2.

(and an additional note, Furman has the all-time record, Duke is second with 10 titles...WVU and GSU are currently tied for 3rd)

I am sure some Western fans can give more detail on those years.

I have finished my basic research, it is pretty fascinating (for a stats junkie/historian like me :)). It put together a graph that shows every SoCon title earned by current members...broken down into regular and tournament titles. The only stats I didn't have access to is the regular season winners for wrestling and men's/women's tennis.

I will convert it to html over the weekend and upload it to SoConFans.com

Furman 148
ASU 137
UofC 117
Davidson 47
WCU 43
GSU 33
Citadel 28
CofC 22
UNCG 20
Wofford 1
Elon 0

(Also somewhat surprising to realize, but then again not really, was that the ONLY SoCon title Wofford has had so far was the football title in 2003)

And to add some kudos to Western's '83 season, Furman and Western tied during the regular season 17 all in Cullowee, and Western beat Furman in G'ville in the semi-finals of the playoffs 14-7. Furman beat Georgia Tech that same year 17-14.

While Western did not win the championship, they had the best team that year.
