I won't start a poll. But reply with a percentage.....how much do you care about your team in a round of playoffs in fcs compared to the "Belk bowl"?

For reference, duke went 3-5 in the acc. It sounds like a lot of fun.

There have been some pretty good competitive games this year. I like the playoff format because we get an additional 3-4 games at the end. But I would go the the Belk bowl if we were in that division.

So you would rather your team went to the Belk bowl? Kudos....I don't care who my team was. There are 40 bowl games that suck and I'd rather not watch. Fcs has a good product in my mind....although we can't see it because espn bought it up. They will make sure it doesn't happen.

I only tuned into the Belk Bowl after hearing they didn't totally paint over the Panthers logos on the 25-yard lines. All they did was just paint them entirely black to get around the NCAA prohibition on having NFL logos on the field. You could still see the NFL shield on the 50 and the Panthers end zone paint in the end zone. I doubt there were actually 48,128 butts in seats since it looked like the lower bowl wasn't even full.

I just love these threads. Is any of your teams in the Belk Bowl? No? Then why start a thread about it?

If you don't like the bowls, then don't watch. The fact is, there are two subdivisions, one has bowls, the other has playoffs. You may feel one is superior, that is your opinion. But I will go out on a limb and say that the Belk Bowl will exceed the exposure that the FCS Championship will get, both in attendance and in TV ratings. So stop with the little brother syndrome already.

I prefer playoffs myself, but I will watch just about every bowl game as well.

Here is the difference between the Belk Bowl, or really, any of the bowl games- and the FCS championship. Right now, if I am at home and a game is playing, I'll turn the game on- but probably will spend more time on the computer and not pay much attention. Or I'll go visit people or do something else without thinking about it.

But when the Bison are playing the championship game- I'll plan my day around it. Because that game actually means something.

Unfortunately you would probably be in the minority Laker...the reason ESPN paid as much as they do for coverage of all these bowl games is the fact that people will watch them and they wil get significant ROI over the FCS National Championship game. When you see ratings for the other championship games either meet or significantly exceed some of these bowl games, then maybe (MAYBE) youll see better coverage.

I would probably watch ASu or GSu in a bowl game but it is hard to say.

I have watched Marshall play in all of their bowl games, but that was to pull for the other team to win by 50.

Cool deal. I love college football and watch every game I possibly can. The Belk Bowl was a really good game this year. No one said the FCS doesn't have a good product, and the desire for an FCS school to move to the FBS is not solely to play bowl games. Nice attempt at a straw man argument though. xthumbsupx

Agreed, 100%. As for the bolded section, you are spot on and it is not even close.

I've seen this argument before, but at the end of the day, if a MAC team has a great season and an FCS team has a great season, you only get 1 more game out of it.
FCS great season = 11 games, 1st round bye, 3 playoff games, NC game = 15 games.
FBS great season = 12 games, conference championship game, bowl game = 14 games

Not speaking of NDSU or Sam Houston State or any of the other teams that have made multiple NC appearances specifically, but unless your team is in the NC game, you have not watched any more football for a great season at the FCS level than you would have watched for a great season at the FBS level.

If my team, or a team I support, was in a round of the playoffs, I would care 100%.
If my team, or a team I support, was in the Belk bowl, I would care 100%.
If my team, or a team I support, was in neither, the Belk bowl would be on tv and depending on the round of the playoffs, it probably wouldn't, so I probably wouldn't care about either but would be watching the Belk bowl.

There aren't 40 bowl games, some are terrible, some not, but all have better ratings and higher interest than the vast majority of FCS football. I will/would support my team no matter what level they played at and wouldn't need to try belittling other teams/levels to make myself feel better about the choice to support them. If Notre Dame is on the schedule, I hope we kick their ***. If Gettysburg is on the schedule, I hope we kick their ***. The approval of others isn't needed for my football enjoyment.

I would watch if my team (North Dakota) if they were in a bowl game. No matter what bowl it is and why??? Because I am a fan of UND no matter who they play and no matter what event it is from the CIT ( basketball tournament) to the Frozen Four (NCAA DI hockey tournament) to a football game vs a DII team. The only game I really don't mind missing is an exhibition game. But since these bowls count in the wins and losses I would definitely watch UND if they were in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, or the BELK Bowl.

I watched part of the Beef O'Brady's bowl simply because former Lehigh head football coach Pete Lembo is Ball State's head coach, so I'm no stranger to wading through bowl games. (Though the refs in that game did Ball State zero favors. Hard to watch the game when the refs appear to barely care to be there themselves.)

Bowl games currently exist because ESPN needs wintertime programming when most everyone is on holiday. Unless you're playing in one of a handful of bowls, they are not moneymakers. If ESPN spent the same time and energy promoting the FCS playoffs the way they did a 24 day "bowl week", I heavily suspect you'd get the same 1.8-2.0 ratings for the FCS playoffs that you would for the bowls, though they wouldn't be "moneymakers" for the schools either. But you'd have 15K-20K people in the stands with electric energy and teams going all-out rather than 3/4-empty stadiums and teams playing in quicksand.

If Lehigh played in a bowl, I'd watch. But I'm happy we don't.

First, Deliverance was neither filmed or based in NC. Try "Hillbilly, USA," it's much more accurate, funny, and creative.

Second, who in the world says the bolded part above? It's not like ASU is a fake military college that rambles on about a war that it lost over 150 years ago to try and get respect by making it sound like it has anything to actually do with the "Late United States" military. The difference between ASU and Citadel is that VMI's female cheerleaders don't kick our fan's asses.

It is not about the approval of UNC fans or anyone else, simply doing what is best for your particular university. The Tar Heels will be the same self-righteous pricks that thumb their nose at us whether we are FCS or FBS and that is a fact understood by the vast majority of Appalachian fans.

Surely there's a reason ESPN doesn't promote the FCS playoffs the way they do a "24-day 'bowl week,'" right? I would heavily suspect so.

Speaking of refs hardly caring, would that include the 2007 FCS National Championship game (the biggest game in FCS) when the refs continually called Delaware, "Delaware State?"

nothing fake about it.

that young lady was just so overwhelmed with moistness by being in the presence of an actual Cadet that she attempted to drag this young man into the sack.

The difference between ASU and Citadel is that VMI's female cheerleaders don't kick our fan's asses.

nothing fake about it.

that young lady was just so overwhelmed with moistness by being in the presence of an actual Cadet that she attempted to drag this young man into the sack.

She may have been, but leave it to a cadet to be the b*tch of the relationship.

It is not about the approval of UNC fans or anyone else, simply doing what is best for your particular university. The Tar Heels will be the same self-righteous pricks that thumb their nose at us whether we are FCS or FBS and that is a fact understood by the vast majority of Appalachian fans.

My opinion^

Also, I went to the Belk Bowl last year to see State play Louisville and had a damn good time. I've been to countless State games at Carter-Finley and had more fun in Charlotte last year than any of them. You people are just plain jaded. Bowls and playoff games are both great places to watch your team. It's threads like these that make me LOL when people get mad at App fans for "thumbing our noses at the FCS." Hypocrites.

I don't know when I last watched a non BCS bowl game, probably 5 or 6 years. I'm not interested in watching 2 mediocre teams fight for scraps. Sure if NDSU was in one I would watch, but I hope it never comes to that personally. If or when the FBS goes to a legit playoff format I could support a move up, until then I will take the FCS any day.

Does anyone have a link to the TV ratings of all of the bowl games and the FCS playoff games that were televised? I can't believe the ratings for some of the worst bowl games are that much more then the FCS games. I think if the FCS games had as much coverage and publicity as some of those bowl games it would be a different story but I don't see that happening either. The NCAA is never going to do that because they do not want to burn the money tree that the bowl sponsors bring to the table. It's unfortunate but corporate america controls everything now days!

If it wasn't for streak for the cash I wouldn't know what the belk bowl is. A playoff system is much better when your team is involved rather than being 6-7 and going to a bowl ala Georgia tech but money talks. That's why ndsu met sdsu in the round of 16

As a point of comparison, the 2009 Appalachian-Montana game drew 2.5 million and a 1.9 rating that was the highest for an FCS/IAA game since the 1994 championship game between Boise State and Youngstown State.

Had there been a Vegas line on that game, I "bet" the ratings would have been higher.

Exactly. Gambling drives the ratings for minor bowl games. If Vegas were to set odds for FCS playoff games, I "bet" we would see a nice little bump in the ratings for those games as well.

nothing fake about it.

that young lady was just so overwhelmed with moistness by being in the presence of an actual Cadet that she attempted to drag this young man into the sack.

Fine list, citdog. Some things speak for themselves and no improvement on the silence need be made. God rest their souls.

A competitive game with two ****ty teams isn't that interesting and trust me I'm an expert of ****ty teams.

Have you ever seen Vegas lines for FCS vs FCS games? If so, that would be news to me.

Check out five dimes and betus.com. They have FCS lines for the playoff games. ODU games and the overs and NDSU unders have been good to me this playoffs.

I'll watch competitive football wherever it may lie.

Too often with bowl games, though, one team feels slighted, does not show up, and the game isn't worth ten minutes of my time.

I'll watch about any college football thats on TV if the game is interesting. If not.....click. Because of my interest in the FCS, I will also watch FCS playoff games via the internet when available. In reality, all the bowl games are "meaningless" except the Championship, but that doesn't make them any less entertaining and a great excuse for fans to have a great time in a new city. Belk Bowl was a damn good football game this year and Dukes offense was as fun to watch as their defense was painfull.

On monday or tuesday nielsen should post the top 10's for primetime and cable for the 24th-30th. That may or may not show some of the bowl games. Most likely the games will have to break ~2 million viewers to show up.

I am a football fan. If there is a bowl game on, I will watch it - boring or not. If there is a FCS playoff game on, I will watch it - boring or not. In both cases, at times there are some compelling match ups. At other times, not so much. Well, time to watch my 3rd NFL game of the day...

No but they are used.

Not by those who bet casually ... most don't even know where to find those lines. If Vegas were to put lines on FCS playoff games and championship game, I would "bet" you ratings would be much higher.

Anybody else notice, at the Liberty Bowl, the maintenance crew still has the kickoff "X" on the 30 yard lines, not the 35's? xzzzzx

The bowl games are looking more and more like an excuse for the host cities to squeeze as much money out of the participating schools as possible.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH SATURDAY DECEMBER 15, 2012

From a school’s financial perspective, a bowl game is like getting invited to a party and then having to pay for the bash.

As a point of comparison, the 2009 Appalachian-Montana game drew 2.5 million and a 1.9 rating that was the highest for an FCS/IAA game since the 1994 championship game between Boise State and Youngstown State.

Don't know if it matters... BUT the 94 NC game was carried on CBS opposed to ****ty ESPN.
