What is the record of independents or teams from non-autobid conferences in the playoffs?

(Again I don't know)

I don't know overall. I do know the Salukis of SIU won the 1983 national title as an independent.

Some other Indie records that haven't been mentioned (I cannot vouch for the accuracy and I don't claim that this is comprehensive, but this is what you get for free)...

YSU 16-3 (with 3 NC's)
WKU 2-3
Delaware 2-2 (one runner-up)
Hofstra 2-4
JMU 1-2
W&M 1-3
Richmond 1-1
Samford 2-2
Tennessee State 2-3
FAU 2-1

Non-auto conference participant
Cal Poly 1-1

I have it as 56-35... but who the heck knows if my data is right (getting the conference affiliation right year by year is a chore).

Here's the breakdown:

Arkansas State 1-1
Central Florida 2-2
Colgate 1-2
Delaware 2-2
Eastern Washington 1-1
Florida Atlantic 2-1
Georgia Southern 20-2
Hofstra 2-4
Holy Cross 0-1
James Madison 1-2
Lehigh 1-2
Nevada 0-1
Samford 2-2
Troy 2-3
Western Kentucky 2-3
William & Mary 1-3
Youngstown State 16-3

Edit: According to the College Football Data Warehouse, SIU was in the Missouri Valley in 1983 (Wikipedia says Tulsa won the conference that year).

Two questions. One. What years was Ark. St. in the playoffs when they weren't in the Southland Conference? Two. Troy St. was in the playoffs five times before they joined the Southland?

Obviously a very distorted total...
GSU/YSU = 36-5
Everyone else = 20-30

Arkansas State was 1-1 as an independent and 5-3 as a member of the Southland.

What year or year's were they 1-1? Not disputing it. Just curious.

Doc

P.S. I can see where my thinking was wrong in regards to Troy St. I wasn't thinking of them playing in multiple games in the years they were in the playoffs but not in the conference. His numbers were probably accurate.

Troy State was in the playoffs three times before joining the Southland from 1993-1995 and went 2-1, 0-1, and 0-1.

Arkansas State played their last season in the SLC in 1986 before going as an independent in 1987-91 and then moving to I-A in 1992. The Indians made the playoffs in 1987 going 1-1 with a victory over Jackson State (35-32) in Jackson and a loss in the quarterfinals to Northern Iowa (49-28) in Cedar Falls.
