Going through some history looking at past championships and saw an * by the 1989 Georgia Southern vs SFA championship game. Said that "*Stephen F. Austin's participation in 1989 championship vacated"

I was just wondering what the story was behind that?

Also I see that it was Mr. Russell's last game? Because the following year Coach Stowers brought home a victory over Nevada. I was just wondering what the story was behind the change then? On his terms, last game he wanted to play, or health reasons?

SFA was hit with NCAA sanctions a year or two after, so they had to vacate several of, if not all of their games. It was definitely on Erk's terms to retire after that magical season.
