Ugly Numbers Surface, UK Stops Keeping Records (http://blogs.courier-journal.com/ukbeat/2012/11/26/ugly-numbers-surface-uk-stops-keeping-records/)

The University of Kentucky athletics department has found a creative way around providing actual attendance at home football games. They’ve stopped recording it. After the Herald-Leader and Courier-Journal obtained the numbers for actual tickets scanned for the first six home games of 2012 through open-records laws – and those numbers painted an ugly picture – UK simply didn’t keep that data for the last home game against Samford.

Through six home games, the average number of tickets scanned was 32,915. That’s an average difference of 17,266 per game from the announced attendance, which includes tickets sold and stadium workers. Hoping to provide you, the reader, with final accurate numbers for the season, I requested the same data for the Samford game. This was the university’s response....

Wow. The Vandy game wouldn't have even filled Rupp Arena.

I guess WKU brought an actual big crowd to Kentucky otherwise there is no reason for that game to have the ACTUAL highest attendance...

Incredible. Teams with fans locally, like WKU, provide.... wait for it.... the highest attendance figures? Wow! Who'd have thought?

I think they don't want to look bad compared to little brother Louisville.

Actual Attendance Louisville
Kentucky 55,386
Missouri State 47,553
North Carolina 53,334
South Florida 50,167
Cincinnati 53,271
Temple 44,609
Average:
50,720

It doesn't look good for SEC Kentucky to get dominated in attendance to BIG East Louisville. It actually doesn't make sense why Kentucky sucks so much in overall football product compared to Louisville considering the money advantage/ SEC Banner.

What is the advantage to over-reporting attendance by 1/3?

It's actually a good marketing strategy. For people who don't buy season tickets, it's the same as hearing about the popular restaurant, film, or concert.

That Vandy game is mind-boggling. 19K in attendance and 45K reported? Wow.

18K for a SEC program is just embarrassing.

Outdrawn by App and Montana.

Unless they are also over-reporting attendance, which is what I've seen a lot of people accuse them of doing. Of course, those are usually the same people who accuse their own school of under-reporting attendance while everyone else over-reports, which is why I posted the article. Throw a little fuel on their fire.

There's no way ASU has under 19,000 when every seat is filled and people on the bank.

We do hear it every year. Seating capacity is 24K, I'm just not sure how anyone could make the argument that this is much less than 30K:

I know if someone says MT is over reporting they are full of ****. I can look around and see the stadium is full with no pockets of open seats and so forth (except right after 1/2 time xlolx) and go "hey this is full, how many does this hold? 25.5K you say? Ok, I know the attendance."

When a stadium has 24K seats and they are all filled, people who would say they have less than 19,000, are full of bull *****, SoCon fans or not. It usually comes from Elon fans..

20000 students who received "free" tickets but chose to watch better football teams on TV rather than attend the game?

This is my question. Some say that students cause somewhat of a discrepancy in attendance. Do most schools not have some kind of system where students swipe their IDs at the stadium? I know at Jackson State you both swipe your ID at the stadium and can buy a certain number of reduced price tickets. Seems to me there should be a way to count students and scanned tickets and get correct numbers for everyone.

I can't speak on these particular schools, but I do believe there are a few schools who are under-reported
