Conque getting his first SLC title is truly what did it.

Roberts had a great conference season, but finishing 5-6 won't merit it.

Has a coach with a losing record ever been given coach of the year?

Yeah but that was against the 9th toughest schedule in the country, including two FBS schools and two FCS that finished 8-3 ... I understand why Conque got it and no doubt he's deserving, but to take a team that only had five all conference selections (1st or 2nd team) and go from 1-6 to 5-2 in the first year is more impressive IMHO ... but congrats to Clint though, great dude and a heckuva football coach.

Pretty good set of 1st teamers there with Flanders, Smothers, Roberson, Sincere, Gus, etc. I'd put those skill guys up against any in the country.

I think Conque got it for several reasons..and not saying there weren't other coaches that didn't also deserve it.

1. 9-2. Loss to Ole Miss and SFA in a monsoon with wins over 3 top 25 teams including #3/2 Sam Houston.
2. Replaced an All American QB and 4 o-linemen that were 5th year seniors...and became better than last year.
3. 2nd consecutive year in the playoffs...1st round last year now STARTING in second round.
4. SLC title.

Nice resume for coach. But I agree there are other coaches in this conference who deserve it also.

You can't go wrong with Conque or Roberts for COTY, but I would have chose Conque too because of UCAs overall success.

Sam fans...explain to me again why:

Defensive Player of the Year: Darnell Taylor, Sam Houston State

I looked at his stats on the SLC website and Darius has more league leading stats then Darnell.

What is there about Darnell that gave it to him 2 years in a row? Remind me please!

Ooooooooooook. Pulled that one out of your @ss huh? Never thought about that angle.

I'll go with "they got the two mixed up and voted for the wrong d. taylor" answer instead. xlolx

That would have done it for me. The development of Smothers at QB from last year, to me, was very impressive. He looked pretty awful against us last year in mop-up duty (gave up the Pick 6 to Robert Alford), but was night-and-day this year.

If I would have had a second choice, it's easily RonRob. It was a gradual process (throw out the SHSU game), but he got the best out of his players as the season went on.

These awards are voted on by the coaches, are they not? You hear it all the time that stats always don't tell the whole story. Especially in a team game like football - 2 years in row seems pretty unanimous to me. Your anger should be directed towards the folks who actually PREPARE & PLAY against these guys, not the ones who are in the stands cheering them on. A play maker who HAS to be accounted for all over the field sure makes it tough for offensive coaches.

I do agree that Darius was one Hell of a player too.

Are you kidding me? Anger? Not even mad. We look at a QB that has phenomenal stats but loses games and he gets an award because of his play. We look at receivers stats. We look at so many stats to decide who gets what award but some positions don't rack up stats..like an o-lineman for example. How do you decide ANY olineman is valuable without stats. I just wanted to know how Taylor was considered valuable without stats. You answered my question. The coaches in the conference watch him and see the "things of value" he does that don't show up on the stat sheet. Great answer. I'd rather have a player with low stats that makes the crucial hits at critical times to win games than one that gets 10 tackles in a game that is already over in the first quarter. Taylor seems to have accomplished that in the eyes of the coaches. Great job!

If I would have had a second choice, it's easily RonRob. It was a gradual process (throw out the SHSU game), but he got the best out of his players as the season went on.

Also factor in that we lost just about every returning skill player at RB and WR at some point between the start of fall camp and/or during the regular season and ended up with two true freshmen rotating at tailback - one of whom signed as a CB, and didn't make the switch until week four (he made 2nd team All-SLC as an all-purpose player) and the other was originally slated to greyshirt, then redshirt, and didn't play his first game until week six ... given the circumstances he had to deal with as far as injuries/academic casualties, the expectations coming in, plus the non-conference schedule, with no layup game to gain some confidence, RR is definitely worthy of COY in my book.
