There are some large disparities between the Coaches Poll and the Sagarin ratings. I imagine these numbers will come into play at selection/seeding time. My school, for example has a ranking of 9 but a Sag rating of 25. ODU is worse off with a ranking of 4 and a Sag rating of 24. But the one that really jumped out at me was Lehigh. Poll ranking of 5 but a Sag rating of 50.

Do the people that vote on this poll know anything about football? Do they even watch it or at least read the paper on Sundays?

I'm not sure what MVFC teams not named NDSU have to do to get some respect

Why is Eastern Kentucky still the highest ranked team from the OVC, and by so far for that matter? Eastern Illinois has just as many losses, less conference losses, and a dominating road win over EKU, and yet they have 145 less votes than EKU.

Errr ... they coach it, that's why it's the coaches poll.

No, I don't know why anyone sponsors a coaches poll. If a Patriot League coach has watched 10 minutes of game film on non PL/non OOC opponents of his team, I'd be shocked.

But to say they don't know football is silly. They know more football than nearly everyone on this board. That doesn't make them qualified to rank a national poll.

Not defending the ranking, nor am I apologizing for it. I'll just give my 2cents in an attempted answer. It's everything that is wrong with the polls. EKU started 21 in the preseason coaches poll likely based in part on last years playoff appearance and good run at JMU from the CAA. No other OVC team was ranked in the Top 25. Jax was 26 but fell fast. EIU didn't even receive a vote in the preseason poll. It's tough to climb in or into the polls as an OVC team if you don't start there due to SOS (real or perceived). EKU never lost consecutive games which will plunge an OVC team right out of the polls. Beat UTM at Martin, lost to TSU before they started to struggle and when EIU beat the Colonels 2 weeks ago they still had too far to climb to make it into the polls.

All that said, everything that is wrong with the polls has helped the Colonels this year and has them still in the polls with 1 game left and a chance to finish 8 - 3. With a little help in the form of losses from "power conference" teams still looking for the 8th win (JSU and Richmond come to mind) and with no major upsets with the projected AQ bids EKU could be in the hunt on Sunday the 18th.

And if all that falls into place and the Colonels get a 2nd bid out of the OVC I won't apologize for it. I'll enjoy reading all the posts on AGS asking why and how it happened. Playoff appearances tend to land teams in the preseason poll the following year which puts you in the position to qualify for an at large. That's what makes the wheel go round and helps you climb the hill. Provides exposure, helps recruiting and even in a year where you may not be able to string together the wins you need to come out on top it gives your underclassmen the extra practice time they need.

The polls are flawed. Surely that doesn't surprise anyone.
