North Dakota State Near Perfect at No. 1 in the 10/22/12 Gridiron Power Index (GPI)

North Dakota State is alone on top of the Gridiron Power Index (GPI), the index ranking for the NCAA Division I FCS and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection. Georgia Southern is ranked second and the media and coach's poll leader Eastern Washington follows in third. According to the unbiased computer rankings NDSU is the unanimous best and GPI #4 Cal Poly is second. The polls have the CP Mustangs in eleventh.

I will disagree with you here as well. I would be shocked if they leave out four 8-3 (all Div I schedule) teams from the CAA, MVFC, & Big Sky to put in a 7-4 ASU.

NOt saying App would get in over just any 8-3 CAA team. in fact, New Hampshire, Richmond, Villanova, and James Madison are locks at 8-3. ODU and Delaware are the 2 most vulnerable teams to going 8-3 and being left out.

I don't think anyone in that CAA group except for UNH is a lock for 8-3. I'd also say ODU is a lock, the only need 2 more wins and they've got Georgia St and W&M left. There will obviously be at least one other CAA team at 8-3 or better but who that is between Villanova, Richmond, JMU, and Delaware is still up in the air IMO and it could be more than one of them.

This GPI ranking looks pretty good to me. Shows Harvard at 24 and Lehigh not even in the top 25.

What it does show is that some conferences have a big drop off from the best to the worst.
For instance Big Sky has 4 of the top 10 and yet is only 3rd strongest conference.

Thar be a damn strong conference. Top half of the BSC is pretty strong too, but I think 2 of them are overrated and won't finish 'quite' that high. The EWU SLO game will be interesting. (I think these are the two best teams in the BSC) MSU and NAU are a little high, not hugely overranked, but a little.

Idaho State is dragging down Big Sky this year, far below the #12 team. Great West used to be near the top every year cuz they usually didn't have any 2-9's or worse with just 5 teams.

Van Pelt went to Maryland (they had one of those awful diamond turtle helmets on today, too) while Russillo went to Vermont. I think that they had a Colgate helmet on, the view was kind of cut off. This summer he had a LaSalle Explorers helmet on there. I had a hard time identifying that one. It is kind of neat to see the FCS schools on there.
