View Full Version : Deriso: Spears Wants Grambling to play in Shreveport

Nick Deriso is laying things out here. Very interesting to see that Spears wants to play in Shreveport, but possibly against a foe not named Northwestern St.

I think Spears needs to play an SLC foe because I think that someone like a NWST would draw much better than any other out of conference foe. Maybe play ULM in Shreveport? Not too sure they'd be fond of that, but perhaps? It's a I-A game, but not sure it'd pay as well as Grambling would like.

Thoughts?
--------------------
Games of chance
An appearance before local alumni got Grambling coach Melvin Spears thinking about playing in Shreveport again soon.

GSU was in talks last year hoping to schedule Northwestern State at Independence Stadium, but hasn't played in Shreveport since a lightly attended blowout game against Alabama A&M in 2003.

"I'm fired up about Shreveport," Spears said, as he continued on to another alumni gathering tonight in Houston. "I think the idea is excellent, with all the surrounding attactions like the boardwalk and the casinos and all of the entertainment venues. It's too nice of a city not to be there. I'm really impressed with that downtown area."

Spears said Grambling officials are still hoping to arrange a non-conference game in northwestern Louisiana, though not necessarily against NSU.

"That would open up some doors for new fans," he said. "And with our pagentry and our band and our supporters, it could be a great thing."

I think Spears wants to go to Shreveport...period.

There's been too much talk about it and even some attempts in recent years to get it done...

Question is, which team would Grambling play? Would it be more profitable to play NWST or could they make more with another non-SWAC foe?

I think the best bet would be against NSU. Both schools have 10,000+ alumni together just in the Shreveport/Bossier area and both are an hours distance from Shreveport.

The last game of the NSU-Southern series was played at Independence Stadium and drew around 35,000...25,000 of those Southern fans..LOL!!!

However, I REALLY wish NSU and Southern could rekindle their series.

A Grambling-Northwestern State in Shreveport would be a great draw. Close travel for both schools, both with good fan bases. Why do people automatically want to bring in MEAC schools for such events? It would be so much better for I-AA to see more games between the Southland and the SWAC.

The games aren't the same. So we are suppose to throw away the rivialrys we have with Famu. At one time(stopped in 2002: smh : continues next season:D ) SU vs Famu was the longest running non- conference BCF game.

Jackson State has played all of those Southland teams except for McNeese State. We played Nicholls State and SE Louisiana several times in the 80s, Northwestern State in 80s and 90s. And we had a three-game series with Stephen F. Austin when they were pretty good. I would like to see McNeese State and Jackson State to play for the first time. It's amazing that this hasn't happened yet.

I think that would be one helluva series...I'm in favor of the SWAC playing SLC schools during the regular season. I'd definitely would like to see Grambling open up with a Southland school every year in Shreveport.

Maybe there's a 'Classic' there? SWAC-SLC Challenge or something of that extent? Every year, it can rotate. Pit a Texas school versus a Texas school somewhere in Texas and then a Louisiana school versus a Louisiana school in probably Shreveport the next...

Okay, stupid idea probably...but would love to see the Texas I-AAs from SLC play the I-AAs from the SWAC in-state (TxSo vs TxSt this year!) as well as some more Louisiana I-AA action between SLC and SWAC. I'm disgusted at how few I-AA games the SLC is playing (with all these I-As and sub Div I foes), would be nice to play some more I-AAs...

Also gotta get UCA to play Pine Bluff again too. I saw the UCA media guide and they are 9-2 against Ark-PB. Would be nice to renew that...

But I have gone on record with having a another game that Grambling contols in Shreveport. We will rotate schools in LA first: sela, nwu, nsu, then play sfa and some others from texas.

Agreed...

Especially if Grambling wants a I-A payday (i.e Washington, Pitt) and then a I-AA or other home date (i.e Concordia or MEAC foe)...

The logistical problem would be getting teams to agree to play us "one time" in Shreveport without a return game. Gonna be tough to get such an agreement. But with some negotiations, we could possibly play our opener in Shreveport each year against a different team, and let the return game the next week fall on a different date (thus freeing up the opening date each year).

1) We "Barely" won.....Southern was on the Verge of a comeback if they had another quarter....It looked like we wer wearing down...

2) Shreveport frown on tailgating I guess.....

As for the fans at the game.....NSU has a hard enough time trying to get 10,000 to our home games (must be because they're "cupcake caliber")....It's not surprising that we we're outnumbered by 15,000. Southern has a decent sized Alum base in Shreveport.

I have a family connection to NWst. and LaTech and when I was younger I didn't understand why Grambling and Tech didn't play each other being so close but NWst and LT would travel over to Shreveport and play every year.

Quit hiding under your Hurricane rock.

McNeese was hit 100 times harder than Southern.

Half our team is from the NO area too, PLUS we took a DIRECT from another hurricane 28 days later AND were forced to live 175 miles from our campus in less than idea conditions.

AND WE RESCHEDULED EVERY TEAM WE WERE FORCED TO CANCEL ON THE VERY NEXT YEAR.

Plus, it didn't effect your soccer team that played in Lake Charles the very day Southern's Football team went and hid from theri 2nd consecutive @$$ shipping to a better football team.

What's the difference? SWAC gets knocked around by the SLC in that sport too!

All smack aside, let's get some SLC vs SWAC matchups. In recent memory, the SLC has the SWAC's number. Can the SWAC teams compete with the SLC? Apparently there's some on SWAC Page that think the SWAC can compete with Div I teams (pssst...mikebigg, the SLC is Div I!)...

What some might not realize (or hadn't considered) is that Grambling's two nearest schools (LaTech and ULM) are playing as D1 programs which is being used against us in our recruiting efforts. I see Grambling eventually becoming a D1 program (hopefully with the rest of the SWAC) in the next 10 years.

It has to start somewhere... we need to test ourselves against teams like U of H (Houston), SMU (Dallas), Memphis State (Memphis), and UAB (Birmingham) where there is plenty of talent that we recruit.

(Credit: http://www.swacpage.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=948884&postcount=26)

Grambling is a Div I school too, bud! Test yourself against some I-AA competition and see how you stack up, before you progress up to the Div I-A teams.

SWAC needs to improve at it's current level before taking the move up. Beat some I-AAs. Heck, beat some Div IIs (or should I just say, beat Tuskegee?)! Couldn't believe MikeBigg was talking moving up to Div I-A (atleast that's what I assume he was referring to since I-AA is also Div I), when the SWAC can't even hang with I-AA...

Since I was mentioned, allow me to respond. I have no problem with playing 1AA schools. That has been clearly stated...but I want our schedule to be in the best interest of Grambling. I am an alumnus of Grambling and my allegiance and loyalty is Grambling. If our administration and coaches chose to play U of H , Wash State, Pitts, etc then that's our perogative and quite frankly, I agree with them. While cheching out U of H's 2005 schedule, I noticed that they played Sam Houston State. Doesn't bother me a bit... Sam Houston can play the University of Cairo and I would be just as indifferent. Are you as concerned that Northwestern, McNeese, Nichols and others are playing BCS conference schools? Do you object when they play the PanHandle States of the world? If so then that's good... nice to know that you are such a "schedule police".

Now in response to my feelings about Grambling playing someday as Division 1. I was not implying it, I was clearly telling all that I would prefer for MY school to be able to someday move to Division 1. That's where we play in all classifications , but in football, the powers that be assigned us to the subclassification of 1AA. That's cool...nothing against 1AA at all. But if we moved forward, I would not boycott the decision.

Understand me well... I have nothing against 1AA and for those who like it, then I love it for you. But my school does not participate in the D1AA playoffs anyway so it's not like we would be missing that aspect of things. Again, no slam on the 1AA playoffs, but under the current payout that's not good for Grambling.

But for the benefit of those who still might not understand where I stand... it's with Grambling and hopefully an eventual move (don't know when) to Division 1 status in all sports.

Some of these areas were hit worst than New Orleans. Port Sulphur was basically wiped off the map, and some of the players families lost it all and this joker worried about a football game.

I agree that the game couldn't be made up LAST year... I can even understand that yall couldn't schedule them this year because you have "X" number of home games figured into this year's budget. BUT, why can't yall agree to play them in Lake Charles next year?

Why doesn't everyone just drop it?! Neither school could control what happenned. It was out of their hands. That was in the past...move on. Nicholls State had to cancel 2 games (one of which would have been a return trip from Western Carolina after the Colonels went up to the Whee in 2004) but that's life in the deep south.

I would like to see Grambling play SLU and/or Nichols for two years in Tad Gormley. Then come back the next two years and play McNeese/Northwestern in Shreveport. Now that would be a smart move! Maybe get a neutral site game in the Houston area, so SHSU can play the Panthers or Tigers!

Eh, Tad Gormley games are just OK. The stadium is really better suited for track competition though. Nicholls State played 2 games there in the late 90's as the Gormley Gridiron Classic: 41-26 victory over Mississippi Valley State in 1998 and 14-13 loss to Western Illinois in 1999 when WIU was ranked in the top 5 to start the season (I think #3).

I was in the marching band and attended both games. To my suprise, there were fairly decent size crowds at both games. As a spectator, I just don't care for Gormley as the seats are so far from the field and the slope of the stadium is very shallow putting you even further away from the action. However, I have no doubt that a SWAC team against SLU or Nicholls State would be a good draw.
