View Full Version : Holy Cross @ Colgate - The 75th Meeting

I think the ValleyRaider usually posts these threads, but I haven't seen one yet (sorry for stealing your thunder if you were planning on doing one, but just wanted to get this started).

HC has won four of the last five meetings against Colgate.

This will be a real challenge for HC. Colgate, in my mind, has had the most impressive performance in the PL to date with a 32-31 loss to Stony Brook (a legitimate top 10 FCS team).

Colgate has a very mediocre defense, but a strong offensive attack. They are more proficient at throwing the ball this year than they have been in past years. HC has usually had success slowing down Colgate's running attack though.

I am put at ease knowing that HC has a week of no classes. The usual allotment of practices, loads of film, Elder with a game under his belt, HC always seeming to play their best against Colgate.

This game reminds me a lot of the game in 2010 in Hamilton.

HC entered the game with a 3-4 record and was coming off a terrible loss at Dartmouth. They also had early season blowouts against UMass and Harvard, and a tough loss at Georgetown. Things looked very bleak, especially with Colgate coming in with a 4-2 mark and three straights wins (Georgetown, Princeton, Cornell) by an average score of 40.6 - 5.3

Well, the Saders jumped out to a 24-7 halftime lead, and Billy Edger caught a touchdown with five seconds left in the 4th quarter to win the game.

That was a fun ride home.

This year, HC comes in limping -- literally -- with a 1-4 record, and Colgate seems to be peaking having won two of three and nearly beating Stony Brook.

Prediction: Holy Cross 24 - Colgate 21

Great minds xthumbsupx

Except for that whole 2010 loss. Still unhappy about that one. Would much rather talk about 2008. Or how we went 4-0 vs. the Cross when I was at Colgate ('03-'06) :D

All-time series is 40-29-5 to Holy Cross (the only PL school we don't have a winning record against)

Happy 75th Raiders-Crusaders

HC won and will defer to the second half.

Got to stop the McC's on this first drive. Can't let them get going early.

This is the PL's best game this week. Watching Pards @ Yale but it's like watching paint dry.

Any stream available for HC/Gate?

Colgate's offense is off to a great start. McCarney has about 80 yards rushing. Defense makes a good stop. Is #34 the linebacker out for Holy Cross out? Seems like he is a big part of their d.

Colgate has 330 yards in first half.
Holy Cross has 257.
Colgate averaging 9 yards per play. Holy Cross 8.
Colgate had ball first.
Holy Cross QB is playing very well.
Which defense will make the better half time adjustments?

Doug Rosnick. Former receiver. His talking about Gilmore was not his finest moment as a first year commentator. Probably doesn't say it if Colgate hadn't lost three in a row to Holy Cross.

True story. Has some interesting insights, but talks quite a bit. Clearly still getting used to the gig. What happened to the TE from the 80s who was the color guy the last couple of years?

Gater

Holy Cross marches right down and scores. 30-27.

The play-by-play is great. Rosnick (on color) has to remember he is not in the DU tv room. Insights are great. Slights not so much. Announcers probably shouldn't be clapping for good Colgate plays. Don't know how much I blame Rosnick but the show's producer needs to shut it down. Rosnick needs to remember how frustrating it is to listen to another team's homer. If you are going to do a job, be a professional. I'm sure he will get better.

Rosnick talking for entire McCord 7 yard run. This feels like a pre season game broadcast where you don't pay attention to what is happening on the field. Also, Rosnick is far enough away from the microphone that he sounds like your uncle calling out from the bathroom. Someone needs to teach him and correct him as he goes. He could be great at it.

That being said, Colgate's offense is on fire.

Colgate, in that Third Quarter, resembled Colgate in the Third Quarter of the Sacred Heart game. They have to sustain it to win against Cross, however.

Colgate seems to make great defensive adjustments at halftime. They need to figure out how to do that before the half. Totally different team.

As for the game itself...HC defense needs work, no doubt about it, but I have been very impressed with Colgate's offense. Could be the best in the Patriot League.

Gavin McCarney is quite the college football player. He sells the fakes exceptionally well and makes good decisions.

Colgate's offensive line is also moving the HC d-line wherever they want.

McCarney has grown into one of the best QBs' Colgate has seen. Colgate goes over 50. Hopefully, Colgate pulls the offensive starters. Need to keep these guys healthy.

Not sure what happened to the Holy Cross offense/QB. They/he looked like world-beaters until the last drive of the first half.

Good things
-The offense. Holy cow, can we move the ball. McCarney and McCord are dangerous, the receivers make some good catches, the offensive line gets stronger as the game goes along. Good, good, good
-McCarney and McCord each rush for 180+ yards, another 160 through the air for McCarney. Gamers all around

Not so good things
-First half defense. Yikes. There were some adjustments in the 2nd half, but still giving up chunks of yards at a time. Some credit to Holy Cross, Elder in particular looks like a keeper, but that needs to improve if this team is really going to take the title. I suppose we could go the West Virginia route of forcing you to keep up, but that seems like it could backfire

Great win, always nice to beat the Crusaders, especially after the last couple of years. Nice to hang out in the thread with fellow 'Gaters and the HC fans as well. Here's to 75 more meetings xbeerchugx

That was actually a very enjoyable game to watch (save for the result)...obviously I'm an "offense guy."

Much better game than it may seem on paper...Gate converted a 4th for a TD, we didn't convert a 4th and 1....basically the difference.

Gater
October 13th, 2012, 03:20 PM
'Gate was only up by three with a few minutes left in the third. Whatever Colgate did (or Holy Cross didn't do) to shut down the Cross passing to the middle of the field was the difference. Good luck the rest of the way.
