Eastern Illinois (1-1) @ ISU-r* (0-0 2-0) Not much of a contest

Drake (0-1) @ ISU-b (0-0 0-1) This game will also give moderate insight into Montana State

UC Davis (0-1) @ SDSU (0-0 1-1) I believe SDSU has their QB back.

UNI (0-1) @ Iowa (1-1) Tough one I am not sold on either team yet.

Albany (2-0) @ YSU* (0-0 2-0) YSU makes light work of albany but it provides more of a test than their week 2 foe

Southeast Missouri (0-1) @ SIU (0-0 0-2) fire lennon

WIU (0-0 1-0) @ Iowa State (2-0) margin of victory might give me more insight into WIU this year. I feel like they are pretty bad.

Murray State (0-2) @ Missouri State (0-0 0-2) Misery st scored points before garbage time in there FBS games, I give them the edge.

ILL St - This is a rivalry game, so potentially a trap game for the birds. But I'm counting on them to get some revenge for SIU. Hopefully this is a MVFC conference match up one day!
IN St - Pioneer team. Yawn. But seriously, just looking strictly at the box score and not knowing anything else, they did give Montana St a reasonable good game. But I expect IN St to win.
SDSU - shoulda coulda been 2-0, but I still consider them to potentially be competitive in the MVFC. We'll see, but this game should be a win at home.
UNI - I'm reluctantly picking them based on performance vs Wisconsin and Iowa's underwhelming performance against ISU, potentially down in the dumps and maybe overlooking UNI (but probably not)
YSU - looking strong this year, should be no way they can lose at home to a 40 scholarship school
SIU - come on Salukis! I can't believe you're that down!
WIU - I must be out of my mind. But I'm going for the double I-AA over I-A, Iowa sweep. WIU is close enough to Iowa anyway.
MIssouri St - I do believe the Bears can and should win this game at home. Good luck!

Ok, a one game in Brookings is fine. I don't care if you schedule Antarctica St.

Just don't want to see MVFC teams going far outside the midwest for non-conference games vs. I-AA teams. Nothing to gain by doing that. Save it for the playoffs.

18-2 on my first 2 weeks of picks. Onto week #3:

Winners:

Redbirds
Trees
Jacks
Panthers
Guins
Salukis
Bears

Non-winner:

WIU

UNI really needs this upset win over The Hawkeyes as their schedule over these 3 weeks is absolutely brutal. Will be nice to see both MSU and SIU get on the WIN board this week. Both the Redbirds and Guins are looking strong so far, and they should keep it rolling this week.

Should be one heck of a MVFC race this season. Could be looking at 4 teams in the top 10 in the near future.

MVFC is tough as nails this go round xanim_chaix

I got a little curious as to when the top MVFC teams were going to start beating each other up. Looks like it starts next week: SDSU @ IND St and UNI @ YSU

The week after we get: NDSU at UNI.

Still not as much action as I was hoping for. This whole CAA style of the top teams being able to duck each other and look good for the playoff committee does seem to have it's advantages. Maybe MVFC needs to get another couple lame ducks? Who cares if the conference has 14, 16 teams as long as we're getting 4 or 5 in the playoffs?

Quick Notes on Albany
We currently are limited in the scholarships we offer at 38 (NEC rule not our own).
We made the playoffs last year, lead Stony Brook basically the whole game and blew it driving for the win.
We recently announced that we are joining the CAA Football conference starting next season and will increase scholarships to 63 over a 2-3 year period.
We have the winningest active coach in Division I Football with Bob Ford.
We are in the process of building a new stadium.

http://www.albany.edu/facilities/fp/images/slideshow/athleticfieldsrepair04-lg.png

We shouldn't beat YSU, but I'm hoping its a good showing. We are pretty thin on offense and our young QB limped off the field on Saturday. No word yet on his status.

If you want to see a really spectacular kid, watch for Cole King (WR #87). Just a Soph, but he is explosive and makes some great catches. He had 5 catches for 124 yards and 3TDs last week before we shut down the offense.

I expect Albany to be at least as competitive as New Hampshire, once funding levels are equal.

Albany 16-38 Youngstown StateI can understand picking Iowa over UNI...but to do so in a 21 point shut out style? Have you seen either team this year? Iowa lost to Northern Illinois, scored only 16 points. Iowa just lost to IOWA STATE and scored just 6 points. Iowa has a NEW OC for the first time in 13 years, and a new OL coach. They've allowed 6 sacks in two games, and have completed just 54% of their passes with the WR dropping ball after ball after ball (it's an unofficial stat, but a Hawkeye buddy of mine says he has counted at least 13 or 14 legitimate drops). Their run game isn't much better - averaging 2.76 yards per carry as a team.

UNI's defense held Montee Ball (yes, I realize Wisky has struggled early in the year so far) to 3.8 yards per carry, while he put up 7 last year. Even with their early struggles for an FCS defense to hold him under 4 is damn good...and UNI is allowing just 2.5 yards per rush on the season and only 150 through the air per game.

Will I be shocked if Iowa wins? No...they "should".

Will I be shocked if UNI can't score and Iowa wins by multiple scores? Extremely.

I agree. There is no reason to think we cannot compete in the CAA in the near future (3-5 years). The first couple years is going to be tough, but we will get there.

A new stadium and new investment in the program will be attractive to recruits.

The big question mark for the future of our program is who gets hired as Head Coach when Bob Ford retires. This is his 40th Season of Varsity Football at Albany. He's been the only coach we have ever had and he is a recruiting genius. Some of the kids he has gotten with the terrible facilities we have had until now have been unbelievable.

The next Coach will have a huge impact on our program either way.

OK Commish. I'll drop Rob Petersen an e-mail to make sure he clears SDSU's yearly football schedule with the all-knowing Doushe-Bag...MplsBison. What a Dickhead. xcoffeex

Go Jacks!!

Eastern Illinois (1-1) @ ISU-r* (0-0 2-0)

Drake (0-1) @ ISU-b (0-0 0-1)

UC Davis (0-1) @ SDSU (0-0 1-1)

UNI (0-1) @ Iowa (1-1)

Albany (2-0) @ YSU* (0-0 2-0)

Southeast Missouri (0-1) @ SIU (0-0 0-2)

WIU (0-0 1-0) @ Iowa State (2-0)

Murray State (0-2) @ Missouri State (0-0 0-2)

There's no reason for any MVFC to travel to a I-AA team that's out of region. It bears repeating.

Not unless you want some return trips, there isn't.

The MVFC season is brutal and doing well in conference play is more than sufficient to punch your playoff ticket.

Absolutely no reason that any team in the conference should be exposing itself to increased risk of loses vs other I-AA teams in non-conference. Either schedule home games vs whoever (doesn't matter, it's just for revenue anyway) or play I-A games, in which case the loss is justified by the payday.

So long as you rename it "The Pussy Conference", just for the sake of honesty.

NDSU is NDSU, not the MVFC. No team got destroyed by a larger margin in the playoffs than fellow MVFC member UNI. The 2011 playoffs showed that there is a wide balance amongst many conferences. Top 4 teams - 4 different conferences....Top 8 teams - 6 different conferences

Top 4 teams - 4 different conferences....Top 8 teams - 6 different conferencesThen again a team can have a game when almost everything goes wrong--NDSU rarely gets beat by anyone anymore--I know they mainly play teams in the MVFC but the last team that did was YSU from the MVFC who later got beat themselves by Missouri State--sometimes the "wide balance" isn't as wide as it appears, especially in the MVFC.UNI has always been a top tier team in 1-AA(FCS)--for some reason they've consistently lost to teams in the playoffs that they were very capable of beating.I remember a few years ago they narrowly missed beating a good Iowa team (that went 11-2 and finished 7th nationally in FBS)losing by 1 point and then losing a game that would've put them in the playoffs to a mediocre Illinois State team.

+1 ^^ 3rd year for YSU's coach and he seems much better this year than last. Plus the upgrades he made during the off season with new assistants really helped.

Coach Ford is the winningest active DI football coach and has been at the helm for 40 years of varsity football at Albany. He is also the former president of the American Football Coaches Association. He rarely generates bulletin board material but he is almost always entertaining to listen to.

He's had some real gem quotes over the years.

Looking forward to this matchup. Its always great to play the storied FCS programs like YSU. We've played at Montana, Georgia Southern and Delaware in recent years.

Plus that Pitt win is getting us some traction in the local press as well.

Week 4 UNI @ YSU
Week 5 NDSU @ UNI
Week 6 YSU @ NDSU

gonna be a fun next 3 weeks
Those will be some fun games. As far as my prediction for this week, I predict NDSU to drop several places in the polls. NDSU is on a bye week, and the other North Dakota team plays SDSU (San Diego State, but could be confused with So. Dakota State).

All home teams for me.

Eastern Illinois @ Illinois St - The Redbirds roll and continue their climb up the polls
Drake @ Indiana St - I think this will be a closer game than most people would think but the Trees still win
UC Davis @ South Dakota St - I like the Rabbits at home
Northen Iowa @ Iowa - Sooner or later the Panthers have to turn a near miss into a hit against these high level FBS team, I don't think it's this week though
Albany @ Youngstown St - The Penguins were horribly streaky last year but haven't showed that so far this year, if they don't play well here they could easily lose
Southeast Missouri @ Southern Illinois - The ice under Lennon's feet continues to get thinner, they need to get a win to keep their season salvagable
Western Illinois @ Iowa State - I think this will be a yawner
Murray State @ Missouri State - Toughest call of the week for me, I'll make the conference homer pick

Semi off topic, but it appears that Missouri State is close to having our first ever sold out (16,500) football game since Plaster was renovated in 91 (used to sell out all the time when capacity was 9500).

You might just be able to claw a little ways up on the heirarchy list this year. SIU WIU and USD very well could all be worse than MSU. :D

Didn't we have 16,500+ when we lost to Pitt State in 96(97?)?

Last few times we've had huge crowds like that, they've been against top 5-10 teams (uni twice, siu once, Youngstown once), and we've gotten destroyed. Hopefully this will be different!

Good luck!

This week: 5-3
Season: 21-7

Picking Western was dumb, but I really did not expect MSU to lose. I now wonder if they'll win a game the entire year. I also thought UNI would pull it off after Iowa looked bad.
