We're less than an hour and a half from kickoff at Kent State as Towson tries to write a sequel to last season's Turnaround Tigers run. Personally, I think the Tigers have an excellent chance to come away with a win. Towson is confident that it can run the ball with Terrance West and company on the Golden Flash defense and if Kent overloads the box, look for QB Grant Enders to strike deep. Don't be surprised if this one is a high-scoring shootout early before settling down.

Are you at the game? I went to the Temple-KSU game in 2010 and enjoyed the experience! Dix Stadium is basically a super nice FCS facility. I know they sell beer behind the away stands!

I just don't see TU winning tonight. Solid MAC teams almost always beat FCS teams, even good ones. Towson better hope their defense is vastly improved if they want to come out on top imo.

There's obviously exceptions, 'Nova beat Temple 2009 as well. Generally speaking, over the last 5 seasons the MAC has done a good job of holding their own. I think this KSU team is reasonably close to last years Toledo squad that crushed a good UNH team.

Though I've been covering college football for 30 years and used to cover the California Raisin Bowl between the Big West Conference and Kent State's Mid-American Conference, this is the first time I've covered a Kent State football game. Did cover a Kent State men's basketball game once, but more about that later.

Kent State is in the second year of a program coached by Darrell Hazell, a former member of Jim Tressel's staff at Ohio State (wide receivers and assistant head coach). Hazell also coached running backs at Penn from 1992-94 and Eastern Illinois (wide receivers and running back coach) in 1988. The Golden Flashes won four of their final five games to finish at 4-4 in the MAC and 5-7 overall.

Towson was 9-3 last season after being 1-10 in 2010 — the biggest turnaround in Division I football — and won its first CAA championship. With a host of returning players, the Tigers are look forward to climbing higher heights. Should be a great season-opening game.

Yes, sitting in the Dix Stadium press box right now. This place reminds me of Tubby Raymond Field/Delaware Stadium with an elevator, a semi-modern press box and a decent scoreboard. It is even painted blue and gold like the Tub.

I agree with you. There is a good matchup with the Kent State defensive line and the Towson offensive line — strength vs strength. A lot of people are anxious to see what Terrance West can do tonight.

Side note for everyone. Five years ago tonight, I covered the first CAA game in history as William & Mary hosted Delaware. Omar Cuff scored seven touchdowns in one of the greatest single-game performances I've seen. Two days later, I was at Michigan Stadium for that magical moment in Appalachian State's 34-32 victory over the Wolverines.

Nothing biased about it. The Ohio National Guard was ultimately ordered in by Nixon (though the governor signed the order). And as a 12-year-old, about the strongest thing I was putting in my system was unfermented grape juice. As the Neil Young song says "Tin Solders and Nixon coming."

Not wanting to spend too much time on politics, but one quote I was reminded of in the press box is that Nixon told the Ohio National Guard to "take the gloves off" at Kent State.

Not much room for food after a late afternoon pre-game meal of chicken breast and spaghetti, but the press box cuisine is some very nice bratwursts with sauteed onions and red peppers and some tasty chicken wraps, with pasta salad (the pasta salad doesn't get as high a marks) and some soup that I didn't try (couldn't be as good as the soup they serve at Princeton home games). I was also impressed with the Cherry Pepsi in the cooler and a good selection of cookies.

I've got to give credit to the fine work of Scott Meyer from the CAA office for a good note heading into this game. CAA teams have scored an FBS victory in SIX consecutive seasons. And I've been on hand in person for a bunch of them.
