The Matchup
Elon will begin its 91st season of football on Saturday afternoon when the Phoenix takes on North Carolina at Kenan Stadium. Despite being separated by less than 40 miles, this will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Elon went 5-6 in its first season under former NC State assistant Jason Swepson a year ago. North Carolina was 7-6 in 2011, but is playing its first game under new head coach Larry Fedora.

This will mark Elon’s fifth contest against a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent. The Phoenix has previously faced South Florida, Wake Forest, Duke and Vanderbilt.

The Series
This will be the first-ever meeting between the Tar Heels and Phoenix on the gridiron.

The Coaches
Elon: Jason Swepson (Boston College ‘92) is 5-6 and is in his second year as a head coach, both with the Phoenix. Prior to becoming Elon’s head coach, Swepson spent 12 years as an assistant with Tom O’Brien at both Boston College and NC State.

North Carolina: Larry Fedora (Austin College ‘85) is in his first season with the Tar Heels but owns a career record of 34-19 in four years as the head coach at Southern Miss.

A Numbers Game
• 1 - Number of wins all-time for Elon against current ACC members; Elon defeated Miami 21-18 on Nov. 10, 1928
• 5 - Elon’s game with North Carolina will be its fifth ever against a FBS opponent
• 144 - Receiving yards needed by senior Aaron Mellette to reach 3,000 yards for his career; Mellette led all of FCS with 1,639 receiving yards and 149.0 receiving yards per game in 2011.

It Happened on September 1
Elon Football: On Sept. 1, 2007, Elon played its first-ever game against a FBS opponent. The maroon and gold dropped a 28-13 decision at South Florida in the season-opener. The Bulls would rise as high as #2 in the national polls later that year.

World Events: On Sept. 1, 1995, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ties With This Week’s Opponent
Multiple Elon players were high school teammates of current North Carolina team members. Included among the connections are:

• Elon QB Thomas Wilson and UNC DBs Pete and Ryan Mangum all attended Leesville Road.
• Elon WR Rasaun Rorie and UNC safety Brandon Ellerbe both went to Anson High.
• Elon LB Jonathan Spain and UNC QB James Summers both graduated from Page High.
• Three freshmen all attended Jacksonville, Fla.’s, First Coast High – Elon’s Adrian McClendon (DB) and Justin Osborne (WR) and UNC’s Joe Jackson (DB).

Elon vs. the ACC
Over the course of its 90+ football seasons, the maroon and gold has faced off with five current members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Elon has matched up against Clemson (0-1), Duke (0-7-1), Miami (1-2), North Carolina State (0-4) and Wake Forest (0-9-1). Only two of those contests (Duke and Wake Forest) have come since Elon made the move to NCAA Division I play for the 1999 season. The Phoenix is slated to take on Georgia Tech in 2013.

Swepson vs. North Carolina
Elon head coach Jason Swepson is no stranger to the Tar Heels. The former NC State and Boston College assistant has lost to UNC just once in his coaching career. In Swepson’s four season in Raleigh, the Wolfpack went 4-0 against the Heels. BC met UNC just twice in Swepson’s tenure there. The Eagles knocked off UNC in the Continental Tire Bowl 37-24 in 2004 before dropping a 16-14 contest in Chestnut Hill the following year.

For Starters
Playing its 91st season of football in 2012, the Elon program has compiled a mark of 40-49-1 in its previous 90 season-openers. Since moving to NCAA Division I play for the 1999 campaign, the maroon and gold has posted a 4-9 record in games to start the year.

A New Face
The Phoenix coaching staff features just one new member for the 2012 season. Former NC State standout Freddie Aughtry-Lindsay now guides the maroon and gold’s linebackers who served in the same capacity at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania last year. He replaced Al Washington who joined the staff at Boston College.

Elon vs. FBS Opponents
Elon’s Sept. 1 game at North Carolina marks just the fifth time that Elon has taken on a Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) opponent. The first was a 28-13 loss at South Florida to open the 2007 season. USF would later peak at #2 in the FBS polls. In 2009 Elon dropped a 35-7 decision at Wake Forest before falling 41-27 at Duke in 2010. Last season, the maroon and gold lost a 45-14 game at Vanderbilt.

Watch This
Three Elon players have appeared on preseason watch lists for postseason awards. Senior wide receiver Aaron Mellette is one of 20 players on the watch list for the Walter Payton Award as well as the watch list for the 2012 College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Wide Receiver Award. Mellette is also among those on the Senior Bowl watch list. Senior linebacker Blake Thompson is on the watch list for the CFPA Linebacker Award and is among the nominees for the AFCA’s Good Works Team. Finally, senior kicker Adam Shreiner is on the watch list for the CFPA Placekicker Award.

Payton Watch
Senior wide out Aaron Mellette is one of the 20 FCS players on the initial watch list for the Walter Payton Award which is presented annually to the top player in the division. Following a junior year in which he set a new Elon and Southern Conference record with 1,639 receiving yards, Mellette placed fifth in the voting for the Payton in 2011. The maroon and gold has now had a player finish in the top 20 in the balloting for five consecutive seasons.

New Faces in the Backfield
The 2011 Elon backfield was made up of three seniors. With their departure, Elon will be looking for a new man to tote the ball. Among the choices for Phoenix head coach Jason Swepson are junior Matt Eastman who handled the bulk of the carries in the spring, sophomore transfer Karl Bostick and true freshmen B.J. Bennett, Tracey Coppedge and Thuc Phan.

Eastman saw time at tight end and as an H-Back the past two seasons and has never carried the ball in a game. Bostick ran for 82 yards and one touchdown in nine games as a true freshman at Akron in 2011.

The All-A’Merle’ican
Senior wide receiver Aaron Mellette, whose actual first name is Merle, was named to seven different All-America squads following his 2011 season. As a junior a year ago Mellette led all of FCS in both receptions per game (10.27) and receiving yards per game (149.00). His 1,639 receiving yards set a new Elon and Southern Conference single-season record. Mellette was chosen as a 2012 preseason All-American by both The Sports Network and College Sporting News.

Thompson on the Move
Senior Blake Thompson spent the first three years of his career in the maroon and gold as a defensive back. In his junior year he finished second on the team with 60 total tackles from his safety position. But in 2012, Thompson finds himself a little closer to the line of scrimmage as he was moved to linebacker in the spring.

Mellette in SoCon Top 10
Entering his senior campaign, wide receiver Aaron Mellette ranks among the SoCon’s all-time career leaders in receptions, touchdown grabs and 100-yard receiving games. Mellette begins the year fifth with 207 catches, tied for fifth with 26 TD receptions and fifth with 15 100-yard receiving games.

Sit Tight
Elon has been in a number of tightly contested games since 2010. In fact, of the last 20 tilts, 10 have been decided by seven points or fewer. The Phoenix has gone 6-4 in those games.

Air Attack
Over the past few years Elon has been known for its passing attack. The Phoenix has ranked no lower than 23rd nationally in passing yards per game in each of the past six seasons and twice the maroon and gold was second nationally. In that span, an Elon quarterback has thrown for 3,000 or more yards on four occasions.
