BROOKINGS – Dell Rapids standout Cole Langer – grandson of Pro Football Hall of Fame center Jim Langer – on Monday gave a verbal commitment to play football at South Dakota State.

The 6-foot-2, 245-pound Langer drove to Brookings to tell the coaches the news in person. He also had a scholarship offer from the University of South Dakota.

Langer will be a four-year starter with the Quarriers. He earned Argus Leader Elite 45 honors as a sophomore, making 113 tackles and rushing for 1,236 yards then missed six games as a junior due to injury. Langer projects as a linebacker or defensive lineman at the college level.

His dad, Tracy, played baseball for the Jackrabbits and his grandfather played baseball and football for SDSU before beginning a distinguished career with the Miami Dolphins, playing every snap for the only undefeated team in NFL history. . . . (read more)

Here is a longer story from today's Argus. In it they talk about Langer's oversized hands. I have met Jim a number of times and the first time I shook his hand I was amazed at how large his hands were.

Langer had to choose between football, basketball and baseball before selecting a school – he’s starred in all three at the prep level

Is he just going to play football or is he going to be a duel sports player like Deion Sanders?

I remember meeting Jim Langer in the early 70s. He was in the Marshall HPER Center at SDSU visiting his college baseball coach. He brought one of his Super-Bowl rings and I later joked with a buddy that the ring was bigger than my wrist. Jim remains a great SDSU supporter and he's has to be delighted Cole is going to be a Jackrabbit.

I would suspect football only.
