As a newbie to this level, I was wondering what the average size and weight for each position would be or where I could find that info out. On the D2 level you had a variety of sizes due to the what I call the "fill in" players who had to play multiple positions to make a whole team if injuries occured or grades weren't made or whatever. You get the picture.
I don't have the exacts on averages at UCA, but we aren't typical for this level yet so here are some estimates. What are the averages for each position?
OL-6'4" and 300
QB-6'1" and 210
WR- from 5'11" to 6'7"
DB around 6' 180 lbs
DE around 6'4" and 260 plus
DL 6'2" and 285 lbs

There are other positions of course but I was looking to see if other schools play bigger or shorter or what...Just lookin for a little knowledge.:read: :rotateh:

It looks like your OL is shorter but heavy. Your WR are about 6' and your defense is about like ours. But it seems your overall weight is less than UCAs. Interesting.

Those sizes appear to be about average for this level. Some schools may be a little lighter here and there but most everybody we've played the last three years were 300+ on the O-line. We'll average about 6-4, 320 or so.

It's ridiculous how big lines are - 6-4 320 is probably bigger than the average NFL line 10 years ago (or now?)

I don't know about 6'4" 300 being AVERAGE for this level but I agree it's not uncommon to run across I-AA teams that big or bigger.

Very common in I-AA and some IA teams (pending on the offense) use smaller faster interior linemen (6'1-6'3/290-310) and bigger offensive tackles(6'4+/300+).

Cal Poly does not have an OL/DL that is over 300 lbs. and one of their starting tackles is only 250. Their biggest starting OL is 6'5" 285 and their biggest starting DL is 6'3" 273. Cal Poly is not the norm. They run an option based offense that needs quick linemen that can get out on the corners. Their defense also is based on speed not bulk.

Which is why Cal Poly is successful. I would much rather have lighter, quicker and more athletic linemen then the heavy weights. I am a life long Denver Broncos fan and that's what the Broncos win with. As for UNC, we've had average at best linemen. When we won our D2 championships we had excellent linemen. It all starts up front, both on defense and offense.

Well, since MSU never seems to update their roster, I'll just make guesses at how big our boys our now from the reports I've heard over the summer.

OL - 6'4/6'5 average about 295, with a top of 330 and a small of 280 (center).
QB - 6'2 205
WR - 6'1/6'2 185 (tallest group of Bobcat receivers in a long time)
DB - 5'9/5'10 180 (only one 6 footer)
S - 6'1 210
DE - 6'3 250
DL - 6'3 285

Your school looks like they are right up there in size. But the main difference between levels of play isn't size necessarily, but speed. You will find that I-AA DE's that are 6'3 260 will move a lot faster than most DII guys with the same size.

Best of luck in your first year of I-AA football!! I've seen UCA play on TV several times and I'm quite familiar with the GSC so I have a pretty good idea where you guys are at at this point. I think you'll transition very well into the Southland Conference and should be able to compete right away by the time you're eligible.

However, from looking at your 2006 schedule, I would think 7-4 is on the optimistic side of things and I'm not so sure 5-6 or 4-7 isn't a bit more realistic. Don't get me wrong, I think you'll be competitive in every I-AA game but that's a lot of travel and you have to go to some pretty tough places to play. In successive weeks you have to go to Brookings, SD, Davis, Ca., and Huntsville, Tx. I wouldn't wish that travel schedule on my worst enemy.

Don't take that as I think it will be an easy win or even a win at all. Since I can't recall ever playing these teams on the schedule, all I can do is guess...and believe me it is a guess. SDSU could have been the nat. champs last year and I wouldn't have known it. Life in D2 is busy enough. Trying to keep up with major football like DI-AA also would be an impossibility. I don't even know who is in the top 25! Georgia Southern is supposed to be revamping everything in their program so I can't say they will beat us or they won't beat us. But I can guarantee you one thing, when UCA plays UCONN in basketball next year....:asswhip:

I guess I don't really know what kind of a team UCA is returning so it would be impossible to predict how the season will go for you guys, but just looking at the scores from last year and how many points your 'D' was giving up to subpar competition, I would say 6-5 provided this year's squad is better than last years in all facets of the game. You guys are playing some tough I-AA teams this fall...

:eyebrow: I would like to see you wup on the USD Coyotes (a strong D II) in Conway. 9/30. I suspect that playing in Brookings as the Beef Bowl game, that you should end up losing there. But that's after SDSU has played Montana, UNI, Nichols St., McNeese all on the road. I'd venture guess that SF Austin may be your only I-AA victim this year. :twocents:

Great inside info from fans of their teams and other teams. This is UCAs first year in the league and I know we will have it tough. But please remember the schedule and the W and Ls and WLs were only guesses as stated above...
I have never seen a game played on the DI-AA level except for the UCA Tenn Martin game last year..and I believe TM didn't do so bad by the end of the year. Anyway, thanks for the input and 6 and 5 would be great! Honestly :)

Furman has never been know for very big players but BL has targeted larger, physical players at OL, WR, RB, FB, TE, S. The defensive line will be quite a bit larger for the next 4 years. Furman might do its best job at linebacker. We are deep with physical players and speed players. One thing that was noticable in the spring is the new FU Conditioning Coach has got the team looking lean.

One last note our QB for the next two seasons is a hoss.
