For those who aren't familiar, Lauren is the daughter of Lafayette defensive coordinator John Loose. Their family has dealt with her pediatric brain tumors nearly since birth.
Third Annual Lauren's First and Goal Football Camp Raises Over $88,000 for Pediatric Brain Tumor Research and Cancer Services
More than 1,400 campers, coaches, volunteers and parents attended last weekend's event
The third annual Lauren's First and Goal Football Camp raised over $88,000 in registration fees and donations to support pediatric brain tumor research and pediatric cancer services.
More than 900 high school football players and 146 college coaches from Divisions I, II and III participated in the one-day camp, held Sunday, June 4 at Lafayette's Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex.
"Countless high school coaches and parents came out, along with nearly 100 volunteers, and helped make the day an unbelievable success," said John Loose, Lafayette's defensive coordinator and the director of the Lauren's First and Goal Foundation. "I'd like to thank everybody from the President's Office down for their tremendous support of the camp, particularly President Weiss and Frank Tavani."
Approximately 30 Leopard football players also dedicated their weekend to the camp, setting up for the event on Saturday and then lending their coaching expertise on Sunday.
President Weiss formally welcomed the group during lunch and was followed by the day's guest speaker, Ben Kotwica of the United States Military Preparatory School. Kotwica was a three-year starter at linebacker for Army under Loose and a captain of the Black Knights' 1996 team which went 10-2 and won the Commander-in-Chief Trophy. Kotwica went on to serve seven years in the Army as a decorated officer before accepting the defensive coordinator position at Army Prep at the invitation of head coach Bobby Ross.
Lauren's First and Goal Foundation has raised more than $180,000 in proceeds from the football camp for pediatric brain tumor research and pediatric cancer services in the Lehigh Valley in the first three years. Over 2,000 players and 300 college coaches have participated in the camp.
