View Full Version : NDSU = MAC ATTACK?

LakesBison

with temple leaving and NDSU already dominating the MAC

(with 2 wins vs Central Mich & Ball State)

NDSU recruiting Illinois, Wisconsin more and more, the MAC is looking great!

(even though summit basketball is better and mvfc is better)

If I was NDSU, I would make the calls to the MAC, get an offer and then force the MVC to take NDSU all sports.

This will fizzle before page 3 because lakes makes no attempt to have a strain of logic behind his stuff sometimes like this and he can't hold his audience.

Even Lakes knows that the MAC is not a corrot to be lured in front of anyone at this point as a "step up".

His strategic underpinning shows a lot more about how much he envies the MVC.

What's the MVC...?
Missouri Valley Conference.....

It is the all sports conference that UNI, SIU, MSU, ISUB, ISUR all belong too. Very very very strong conference in every area. The Dakota schools have been trying to get into it since D1 was announced...the problem is the Valley is a HUGE step up in competition/where the dakota schools are in athletics and very stable and comfortable where they are at number/memberwise....

The Missouri Valley Conference (also called MVC or simply "The Valley") is a college athletic conference whose members are located in the midwestern United States. The conference participates in the NCAA's Division I.
Founded in 1907 as the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA), the MVC is the nation's second oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference. However, some consider the MVC to have been formed from a split of the MVIAA in 1928. Most of the larger MVIAA schools formed a conference that retained the MVIAA name and would ultimately become the Big Eight Conference. The smaller schools, plus Oklahoma A&M (now Oklahoma State University, which ultimately [re]joined the Big Eight in 1957), formed the MVC. During the Big Eight's existence, both conferences claimed 1907 as their founding date, as well as the same history through 1927. It has never been definitively established which conference is the original and which is the spin-off.
During the 2006–2007 college basketball season, MVC teams held a 74–27 non-conference record, including a record of 44–1 at home. The Valley finished in the Top 6 of the RPI and ahead of a BCS conference for the second consecutive year, while also garnering multiple NCAA bids for the ninth straight year and 12th of 14.[1]
The MVC has not sponsored football since 1985, when it was classified as a I-A (now FBS) conference, but five members have football programs in the Missouri Valley Football Conference (known as the Gateway from 1985–2008) of Division I FCS (formerly I-AA), and a sixth competes in another FCS conference, the Pioneer Football League. The Missouri Valley Conference shares its name with the Missouri Valley Football Conference, and the two also operate from the same headquarters complex in St. Louis. However, the two are separate administratively.

If it wasn't for WSU being in the conference as long as they have they wouldn't be in it right now I'd bet.

The MVC is based in St. Louis (pretty much every conference tourney is in St. Louis or St. Charles which is on the NW side of STL), and Doug Elgin (the comish) has said 10 teams is the best number of teams to have and he will keep it that way as long as he can.

The only hope (not to bring the other thread to this thread) for any of the Dakota schools is there is a massive realignment and schools like Creighton, Wichita State, and Missouri State leave the conference. The thing with MSU leaving is that I don't think ISUr and SIU would be far behind...and honestly I think UNI would be involved in that as well. I have no "proof" of this but if the conference sticks together another 4-5 years I would be that SIU, UNI, ISUR, and MSU (maybe ISUB) would be a package deal.

If Temple doesn't join the Big East I hope they stay in the MAC rather than move to CUSA. The MAC honestly isn't as bad as many make it out to be. The conference went 4-1 in bowls this season. NIU, Toledo and Ohio are solid top 40 programs and would/do kick the crap out of good FCS teams. Also, the schools, for the most part, are very good academically.

Also, honestly, it's not really good to have one team be a big outlier. WSU is the outlier in the MVC, but MSU is right there with them(ish) They make real good travel partners for the lower level olympic sports.

Drake/CU (2 hours), UNI/Bradley (3.5hours), ISUR/ISUB (2.5 hours), Evansville/SIU (2 hours) MSU/WSU (4.5 hours)

The NCAA needs to enforce the attendance rule and boot Eastern Michigan out. That would open a spot up in the MAC.

I wouldn't mind seeing UNI take a football only invite to the MAC....However, I'm strong opposed to leaving the MVC as it currently sits.

However, you are correct....There are only 2 non-bus games each year for UNI is most sports. MSU and WSU.

However, UNI has bused to WSU due to weather (2 years ago I believe)

Bowling Green moving to the West division and having UMass and Youngstown be in the East division doesn't look too bad. Gives 14 football teams, 7 in each division.

I hope the MAC doesn't add any more football-only schools, although somebody like NDSU would be interesting football-only. Pretty good hike even from NIU though, and we're sort of an outlier in a Michigan-Ohio conference. If we're going to add a football-only school I'd rather add one on the West end of the conference though. One that's already good at football. We've added Buffalo, Temple, and UMass in recent years.

YSU would be in the MAC already if the other Ohio public universities present wanted them. YSU has had to cut its own course. I have had a hard time imagining a scenario in which the Penguins make that incremental move.

YSU has made a lot of their time since moving up from Division II to the FCS. Being in the FCS actually distinguishes them from the MAC schools, and playing for a few championships is mighty different from playing the 4th place Big East team in Toronto in January. Check out Marshall and Troy. Are they being discussed beyond their regions the way they were when they were entrants in a national tournament? I don't think so.

I didn't know who Troy was before they were in FBS, so I think it does help some for name recognition to be in FBS, but then, I tend to follow FBS and not FCS. FCS fans I'm sure were much more familiar with them. I suppose schools get known better by playing big time schools, or by having top players (Marshall with Pennington and Leftwich).

I do wish FBS had a significant playoff like FCS does. The current system is messed up. "Hey everyone, lets take a vote to see who's the best team!"

Actually as far as the lower tier FBS and FCS go it really is that you know who you play. At both levels the only people that are gonna know or care about are either regional or conference mates. That's just the way it is. It's probably a big part of the reason you didn't know about Troy before and we really don't follow them now.

FCS fans though know about teams from all across the land in the division. FBS fans don't a lot of intermingling with fans from other schools from what I've seen and they don't care to know a whole lot about the other teams in FBS unless it is a school that gets play of ESPN and so forth.

FCS seems to be a much tighter knit community from end to end than FBS and I like that it is not just isolated to the Griz for instance and I can talk **** with App, Albany, NDSU, etc...

I don't even know how I got off on that tangent. Oh yeah Troy State. I got a cool hat from those guys back in the day.
