SHSU is getting ready for the Seawolves...

At long last, it's all set.

Finally, the Bearkats know who they'll be playing in next weekend's FCS playoff game.

While Stony Brook and Albany duked it out in a fight to the finish on Saturday afternoon, Sam Houston's players and coaches sat at home eagerly studying the game online knowing that they would face the winner next weekend at Bowers Stadium.

Stony Brook, which is ranked 22nd, trailed 28-10 with just minutes to go in the third quarter before rallying with 21 unanswered points to take the lead early in the fourth. The Seawolves then held off a feisty Albany team in the final minutes for a 31-28 victory to advance to the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

Now the matchup for this Saturday is all squared away. Top-ranked and No. 1 overall seed Sam Houston State will host Stony Brook with a trip to the national quarterfinals on the line.

IMO, SHSU will have no trouble with Stony Brook. Fox Sports had a couple of their games on this fall and SHSU looks like a good team. Defense is solid with a good offense to go with it. Hard to go 11-0 for any team.

'Cats will be hard to beat for any team in this playoffs.

As perhaps the only man in America who has kept tabs on these two teams all season, I would suggest that this could get ugly if SBU has ANY turnovers. If this were being played on Long Island, I'd give the Big South boys a better shot.

Essington keeps gaining more & more confidence every week as teams challenge him to beat them by focusing on Maysonet & Jackolski. The kid has proven to be an incredible find for the Seawolves.

11-0 is a great feat no matter what conference you play in and this upcoming match up with Stoney Brook is very intriging to me, I preface my upset pick based on the conference you play in. Your right on the money as I have not seen SHS play this year but if you have some hi lights please share. Was that last year when Nova went down to Texas and beat SFA pretty good? Well, Stoney is no Nova but still good enough to win the game IMHO, and for the most part I am getting the impression that everyone thinks Sammy is gonna hammer Stoney into pebbles anyway, nobody is seems to be taking them serious.

It will be interesting. SBU has a great rushing attack. If they can keep the SHSU offense off the field I think they have a shot. They've definitely got some mojo working for them that's for sure.

I wont discount that SHSU is pretty good with an 11-0 record-BUT always a BUt. The only only team that really beat us up this season was Buffalo 35-7 and that was with our starting QB playing on a torn ACL. Now we like Albany last week have nothing to lose by going all out. Put Essington in the Buffalo game maybe a different score. Not saying we would have won but maybe a better played game.xtwocentsx

SB's running game will be shut down early and they will be forced to throw the ball. I predict at least 2 picks by the SHSU secondary and a 2-3 score win for the home team.

#4 rushing offense vs. the #1 rushing defense.

Should be interesting to say the least.

If SBU has to throw the ball they're in trouble. Essington is a game managing QB. He missed a lot of open receivers against Albany.

I will go out on a limb and say the SHSU defense as far as rushing defense goes is misleading.

I am going by nothing more than the scores I have seen on their schedule. They got up big and the other teams started passing more than rushing.

Stony Brook is going to cram the ball down their throats on Saturday. Still wont shut up the front runners but it will be fun to watch.

What's so interesting about this game is that I could say thing just the other way around. Our last time in Texas we held Utep to 36 yards on the ground and caused two interceptions and two fumbles.

As I mentioned earlier, this game will come down to turnovers and whether or not Stony Brook can control the clock. Sam will march up and down the field on the Seawolves just as Liberty & Albany have the past few weeks. But if the Bearkats get sloppy, the Seawolves are opportunistic. Jackolski & Maysonet are not the type of runners that Sam has seen much this year in the Southland.

Don't think that's what he meant, Ocean. I think your FBS win is about as impressive as ours against UNM. Granted, it is step up in schollies & overall athletes (hypothetically) & to win on the road is tough but neither UTEP or UNM is a "powerhouse." Pretty sure that's what he's meaning.

I would not say that Albany marched up and down the field. They scored points, but only a couple bigs plays. Other than that I thought their offense was mostly ineffective. Liberty was exchanging blows with Stony Brook but I don't think Sam Houston is going to throw for 360 yards. My bet is the game will be surprisingly low scoring considering the two highest scoring offenses are squaring off. It'll be interesting.

We didn't win at Utep, we lost in overtime, but I'm just pointing out that we are also capable of shutting down running games and causing turnovers. I mentioned Utep specifically because I figure you guys are more familiar with them than the rest of our schedule.

Can you guys post a link to your depth chart?

I have seen Stony Brook's rbs and they are good runners but were stymied against Albany. They are human and can be shut down. Against Albany one of them rushed for 100 yards and the other40 or 60 and the O line gave up 4 sacks. If Sammy is as good against the run as they say these rb's will be held in check.

I am pulling for SBU but I think the clock will "strike midnight" for Cindarella down in Texas. Sammy wont throw from the 3 yard line on second down with 40 seconds remaining...I dont think. GOD!!! I CANT BELIEVE WE LOST THAT GAME!!!! Hats off to Chuck Priore. Hopefully next season we kick things off in our new house and have SBU up everyother year again. That is a rivalry game that needs to happen every year.

Good luck to all

Griz - you're the only one bringing up Lamar, buddy. You won't find a Sam fan that is clinging to that win - or denies we played in a down league this year. On that same note, no one came within 2 scores of us - and that was including an FBS team, 2 FBS independents & 2 2010 playoff teams. Dice it up however you want - still gotta play the games. That's why I'm glad we have the playoffs to settle things, regardless of how many rounds we go. Like I said though, I find it amusing that a fan of such a storied program like MONTANA (Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...as the light shines down) keeps pressing the same argument for a Bearkat loss.

Scott Stoker defenses are usually attacking defenses. Stack the line of scrimmage to stop the run and blitz if you pass. They put their Db's on an island, usually, but you better get the ball off quickly before they get to you. If SB can't run on them, it might be a long day.

Just my two cents,

SHSU has only faced 1 team with a RB that has gone for over 700 yards on the season - Texas State and it took Franks 12 games to do it.

Most of our games our starting was pulled after halftime or the third quarter because the game was pretty much won and the coach wanted some of the backups and freshmen to get playing time. So our numbers maybe misleading on the number of yards he could have gotten. He has lead the SLC in rushing the last two years to. That should say something considering the rb McNeese normally has.

Very upfront, except most CAA fans in this forum. If the CAA loses all 5 or 4 of the 5 this weekend (and maybe 3 of the 5), I'd like to see the overrated flag thrown against the CAA like several CAA fans have thrown against other conferences such as the Southland.

I disagree about Sam Houston not facing good running backs. They shut down our two backs who by the way are very good. Marcus Curry had played ball at Navy prior to arriving at Texas State. Sam held Curry to 8 yards on 8 carries and Terrence Franks to 71 yards. Franks is a 100 meter sprinter.

The shut down our four runningbacks, too. Of course, by that time, our offensive line was all crippled up. A lot of people, from you guys on, shut down our runnning game until we decided to go with a lot of wildcat formation near the end of the season. Without Riley Dodge at Qb and trying to protect our only non-redshirt QB, Cody Stroud, a lot of people knew he wasn't going to run the ball on the spread option plays, so they just completely ignored him on those plays. With the wildcat they couldn't just key on our runningbacks. :)

I think Sam is a very very good team, but I'm still not completely sold on them being able to run the table in the playoffs. Not saying they can't or wont. I just know firsthand how a SLC team can dominate the conference and then run into something different in the playoffs. Let's face it, the SLC was pretty bad this year outside of Sam and UCA. Only 4 teams were above .500, and two of those were at 6-5. That said, again, I saw Sam play a lot this year and they have a very solid squad.

Nice feature on the SHSU QB - urge everyone to 'click' over to it as the more views, the more coverage of SHSU!

HUNTSVILLE - Sam Houston State center Travis Watson remembers sizing up then-freshman quarterback Brian Bell at the start of fall camp in 2010 and being a tad skeptical of his new teammate's abilities.

At the time, there wasn't much to size up. Bell was listed at 6-2, 175 pounds, though Watson said he looked "about 150 pounds soaking wet." The wiry kid didn't have the physical appearance of a typical Division I quarterback, but he was working diligently to grasp command of the Bearkats' option-style offense.

Coverage from Fox Sports Houston... again, spread the word! :)

Coming off a perfect season, the Sam Houston State football team is preparing to play host to Stony Brook in the second round of this year’s Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Playoffs on Saturday.

Sam Houston (11-0) is coming into the game as the number one overall seed in the playoffs, and are the only unbeaten team in the FCS division. They are currently riding a 13-game winning streak, the current longest in all of Division-I football.

This will be the fifth time in school history that the Kats have made the playoffs. In 2004, the teams last appearance; they made it into the quarterfinals.

SFA was 6-5 this season, so no "We" wouldn't be very good. As for Sam...I honestly don't think they'd have gone 11-0 in another conference. Their OOC was pretty weak.

However, none of that matters during playoff time.

Hard to say for certain, but one thing is for certain SB is not a CAA, Big Sky, or Southern conference team so making that argument on the week we play them is weak sauce especially since the same argument could be made that they wouldnt be in the playoffs at all if they were in any of the aforementioned conferences....

On a related note..

From New York...

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- A Stony Brook football program that once was nowhere on the national radar suddenly finds itself with the chance of a lifetime as it challenges No. 1 Sam Houston State (11-0) in an FCS second-round game at 3 p.m. (ET) Saturday at 12,000-seat Bowers Stadium.

Six years after taking charge of the move to play full-scholarship football, Seawolves coach Chuck Priore almost has to pinch himself to know it's real. "It's a great honor,'' he said. "If you're going to be in this tournament, you want to play the best.''

The Bearkats might have the antidote to Stony Brook's high-powered offense, which is second in the FCS in scoring (38.9) and fourth in rushing (277.1). Sam Houston ranks first in rushing defense (59.0) and scoring defense (12.6) and second in turnover margin (2.2).

From Houston Chronicle...

HUNTSVILLE - Sam Houston State could receive a taste of its own medicine when it meets Stony Brook on Saturday in the second round of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

The top-seeded Bearkats (11-0) and Seawolves (9-3) utilize different offensive and defensive schemes, but their formulas for success are similar - running opponents into the ground while slowing their rushing attack.

Sam Houston State's option-style offense averages 250 rushing yards per game (seventh in the FCS), with Stony Brook fifth in the FCS in rushing (277 ypg). The Bearkats have held opponents to an FCS-low 59 rushing yards a game; the Seawolves' defense has been nearly as stingy (94.2 ypg).

I understand where Dave is going with the "FCS history lesson", but the preview is a very poor assessment of Sam Houston State from someone that is looking at no more than a stat sheet. Would have been nice if Dave would have at least mentioned Richard Sincere and attempted to present a more 'fair assessment' of a team that has rolled through the Southland (regardless of how poor Dave believes the competition is).

Agreed. BTW, the Southland has not had a "bad" year. Sam is undefeated and #1 in the nation, UCA is in the top 15, 9-3 currently, and a blowout win in the 1st playoff game.

SFA finished 6-5, lost by 11 early in the season to UNI, with an FBS loss to current year Big 12 power Baylor, another early season loss to FBS transition Texas St. McNeese finished 6-5, lost to Big 12 Kansas and FBS transition Texas St. (then SHSU, Central Ark., and SFA). Northwestern St. finished 5-6 by losing to LSU and SMU, and also the 4 Southland teams above that were ahead of them. The Demons beat the #1 team in Division II (Delta St.).

Many of the Southland schools played 2 FBS games. I would challenge ANY FCS conference to have its teams play 2 FBS games and come out winners - won't happen. Could Georgia Southern have beaten LSU and SMU - not even close.

If SHSU comes out of the half in a big way, I think the momentum will swing and the crowd will get behind them...

The Bearkats have outscored foes 142-17 in the third quarter and they're going to have to put some points on the board. Got to pin SBU back with this opening kick and the 'D' needs to play as it did in the first quarter (held SBU to five yards) to 'turn the field'.

Make that... 156-17. :)

How is SHSU the worst No. 1 seed of all time? There have been several No. 1 seeds that have not only lost, but lost by significant margins on their home field.

I do not think the result this afternoon is reflective of SHSU's potential nor do I think this is the last we'll hear from the Bearkats (barring a coaching change) over the next two years based on how many young players are making an impact.

I think the off week may have thrown the Bearkats off to some degree... and there was a lot more passing attempts than I would have anticipated, particularly from Stony Brook. SBU's QB was 9 for 29. Half of his completed passes were huge heaves that made significant gains down the field. A quick look at the stats shows that they were averaging 25.1 yard per completion!

Thought SHSU for the most part put the clamp on the Seawolves' offense, take away 2 or 3 plays... with the officials contributing significantly to the cause. There was one pass interference call on 4th & 9 that went against the Kats and would've likely led to SHSU taking a two score advantage. Take away the 65 yard run, SBU was averaging about 3.3 yards per carry.

Give SBU credit because their defense did keep SHSU off balance until the third quarter.

Worth noting... Flanders was not as much the featured back in the first half with most of his carries, yardage coming in the second half. Not sure if that was the 'gameplan', but Flanders only had two carries in the first quarter! And six in the first half total! He finished with 21... and clearly took care of a worn down SBU defense.

From New York...

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- If Stony Brook accomplished nothing else, it served notice to the Football Championship Subdivision that there's a new player on the national scene.

The Seawolves led No. 1 Sam Houston State by seven points at halftime, and even after the game turned around in the third quarter, Stony Brook twice came back from seven-point deficits to tie the Bearkats in an FCS second-round playoff game Saturday at Bowers Stadium.

But when time ran out, Sam Houston still was standing as tall as the granite statue of its namesake at the edge of town, with its unbeaten record intact. The Bearkats (12-0) drove 83 yards to win the game, 34-27, on Tim Flanders' 7-yard run with 1:01 to play.

Stony Brook’s impressive road through the playoffs ended on Saturday to Sam Houston State University 34-27 in the second round of the Division I Football Championship. The Seawolves fought hard and kept up with the Texas team for the majority of the game, but SHSU’s quarterback Brian Bell rose to the occasion towards the end to lead his team to a victory.

Bell finished with 161 yards and three touchdowns while SHSU’s running back Tim Flanders ran for 102 yards and a touchdown. Tim Flanders ended a 10-play, 83-yard drive when he ran the ball seven yards into the end zone with 1:01 left on the clock to ultimately defeat Stony Brook.

While Stony Brook is usually recognized for their running game, SHSU gave them tough competition and held Stony brook to only 150 yards on the night. Sam Houston State ranks first in the FCS in rushing defense (59.0) yards per game.

you know what might have happened. the players may have read this yesterday

Tulane: Multiple sources have told us, over the past two days, Tulane has spoken with Rutgers offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti, Sam Houston head coach Willie Fritz, and a Sun Belt head coach. As crazy as this might sound, we happen to think the Tulane job will turn into a great job over the next few years. Hard to understand what is going on in NOLA.

That was reported on the 'Exclusive Content' section of KatFans.com.

I have a hard time believing that he would leave for the aforementioned school and that said school would be willing to continue to wait until the conclusion of the NCAA Division I postseason before hiring him. More importantly, I believe the fans of the school would be very upset if that was the direction the institution went in considering their fans were dead set on Rich Rodriguez and Mike Leach-caliber coaches.

I've posted it elsewhere but I'll state it again here...
Sam Houston will make a statement this weekend and crush Stony Brook. Don't think this will even be close after halftime.

should of stopped posting it after the first time grizzy

overrated flag? overrated by whom? again, most CAA fans know were not a good as the past several years, when are you guys gonna realize this. Day late again as now you are just starting to realize how dominant the CAA was a few years ago and are applying that mindset to the present time only a few years latexnodx

from a CAA homer, but we were dominant a few years ago

What a joke.

SHSU is the worst #1 seed in the history of the FCS playoffs. Enjoy the single win guys, by this time next week you can start resting up for next year.

Using your logic, NDSU may be the worst #2 seed - squeaking by a team today that barely made the playoffs, and came from behind in round 1 to beat another team that barely made the playoffs. This was all in the dome that is much more of a home field advantage than most places. Let's see how things go moving forward before such harsh judgements. There have been many #1 seeds who have lost the first game - so it is difficult to take you seriously when you make statements like this. xsmhx

Didn't do any research.

I find it's much easier for me to just make a bold statement and then let others correct me with the actual info.

But SHSU still is the worst team of the 8 remaining.

I think i agree with the last part, Montana state is looking more and more like a pretender...I think they would and will beat SHSU though.

To bad UNI UM cant be a semifinal matchup they are obviously the best 2 teams in that bracket (after today)

BTW, nice job by the NCAA to send down Big Sky officials to call the game today.

Fine season, SeaWolves.........y'all did OK by me. I don't think any other 2011 Big South squad would have stood toe to toe w/SHSU for 59 minutes.

I don't understand the animosity toward SHSU here. What do you have against the Kats, is it jealousy? We have to read your posts about how great NDSU is all of the time. I surely hope all NDSU fans aren't as miserable as you are.

No need to push back or try to have a reasonable discussion on this board. Lots of haters and people now making excuses from all conferences. Bottom line, there are 8 teams left. After next week there will be 4, and so on. Let's listen to the excuses after next week, I'm sure that folks are already planning on reasons why their teams/conference didn't do well after the games. I think Sam will roll next week against Montana St. Playing at home this time of the year makes a huge difference - especially to college kids at this level. Enjoy this, the crowd looked great in Huntsville today.

And, statistically, that's a good bet - in Southland/Big Sky matchups, the home team just wins almost every time. I gotta pull for the Bobcats and not the Bearkats, but that's only so hopefully we get another playoff game in Missoula, and despite how many times we've played, Cat/Griz has never happened twice in one year. And that's with a HUGE caveat that we also have to beat UNI first, which is definitely not a given - Panthers played well today.

Well, Stoney is no Nova but still good enough to win the game IMHO, and for the most part I am getting the impression that everyone thinks Sammy is gonna hammer Stoney into pebbles anyway, nobody is seems to be taking them serious.

congrats to Sam Houston for the win yesterday.. as far as my upset pick (and yes my bracket is now toast) all I can say is the Long Island Boys could smell it on the Bar b Q but did not get invited to the dinner table, but that upset was on the table....

Shouldn't have to explain it over and over, but what's one more time?

SHSU did nothing in the regular season to prove to anyone that they were the best FCS team. The Southland is a very average conference, through which SHSU sleepwalked. The non-conference schedule was equally average (New Mexico would've finished near the bottom of the Southland).

This week you play the first good team of the year and I suspect the result will be what everyone expects: SHSU will be exposed for frauds.

I don't think Montana can be beat in Missoula. If Montana ever figures out how to win away from Wash-Grizz consistently, they can name their championship year.

Also, we were picked to finish 4th in the Southland this year. I'm pretty sure that nobody saw us coming.

Bottom line is that the KATS won. FCS feet are wet. Not guaranteeing a win, but a much better, much more relaxed SHSU team will show up Saturday.
