Sam Houston State Tops the Final 2011 Regular Season Gridiron Power Index (GPI)

Unbeaten Sam Houston State edged into the top spot of the Gridiron Power Index (GPI) with the entire top four separated by a single point in this final ranking of the 2011 regular season. The GPI is the index ranking for the NCAA Division I FCS and a top indicator of at-large playoff selection.

The Colonial Athletic Association has six teams in the top 25; the Missouri Valley Football and Southern Conferences have five teams each; the Big Sky Conference has three; the Southland and the Great West Conferences have two each; and the Ivy and Patriot Leagues each have one. (Games through 11/20/11)

As conference average rankings the Missouri Valley Football Conference moved into the #1 slot, overtaking the Southern Conference.

The greatest movement this week saw Youngstown State moving down five places and Harvard rising five. Three new schools entered the top 25 in Cal Poly, Southern Utah and Eastern Washington while Portland State, Samford and South Dakota departed. The Final 2011 GPI will be released after the championships once all the college football games have been played, in January 2012.

The GPI was correct in indicating the top eligible 10 at-large selections except it indicating #14 Illinois State over the committee's choice of #33 Eastern Kentucky.

EKU #33
ISUr at 14
ISUb at 17
Furman at 20
Delaware at 24

(these are what I immediately searched for, hopefully saves a few people some time).

Look at Cal Poly creepin' up there... (Impressive)
If I'd have told you the Eastern Washington Eagles finish ranked 25th three months ago you'd have slapped my face and called me Ursus

Has the GPI ever been this "off" in predicting the field. It seems like every year there is maybe one team, but this year it suggests a few misses (ISUs - although one of the ISUs only had 6 DI wins I think, right?). For all the ranting and raving about not getting a home game, I as a JMU fan could not be happier about 1) playing #33 in GPI and 2) getting a game on national TV.

SCST was something like #50 and got an at-large last year. I'd say that was worse.

Has the GPI ever been this "off" in predicting the field.

The GPI correctly indicated the top ten eligible teams and the committee supplied the WOOF. This is a definite pattern because the committee does not choose all the top "eligible" at-large teams to fill the bracket every year. It doesn't seem to matter how badly ranked the team is, the committee usually chooses one or two over higher ranked ones.

Not to mention that the number #2 team in the country with the #2 GPI get the 5 seed? Good one there committee...(head scratch)

And one more historical thread for accurate perspective before I rest my case.

This was consistent across all the polls on Massey Composite .. it was not debatable at the time this selection happened. OVC was terrible at this time ... 0-17 in playoffs from 2001-12. JSU didnt get good until 2013. Hence all the furor over the EKU at large bid giving OVC (ranked 8th) the same # of bids as MVFC (ranked 1st)... and then when EKU got the home field over JMU of all teams due to the huge bid they put up .. then people started to dig deeper.

If you tolerate corruption, you deserve to get screwed. DE Coach Rocco sure got tired of it quick .. at least that screw job was somewhat debatable.

I'm done with my filibuster.

if we could just have that defense with the past few years offense..... I am hoping Keeler can figure that out.

Has defense ever been a priority for Keeler? I honestly don't know.

Lighting in a bottle for one year? All his teams at SHSU have had poor defenses.

Raymond never won a 1-AA national title. His last national championship came in 1979 when Delaware elected to remain D2 while most of their "peers" had moved up to 1-AA. His teams notoriously struggled in the playoffs. A reasonable case could be made that Keeler is on track to have a more accomplished career.
