It's about this time every year that I like to start pulling out Google Maps and learn where all these FCS schools are located.

With the current playoff projections the link below can show you a pretty good feeling what might happen if the playoff committee completely comes together in terms of geography....

Amazing to me that Norfolk St & ODU are pretty much right next to each other...

Hi, I'd like to share a Google Maps link with you. Link: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&vpsrc=6&ctz=300&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=206379784184323320354.0004b1ef6b192f9479257&ll=37.160317,-83.671875&spn=53.434611,79.013672&t=h&z=4

Thanks for the map! You should type out your brackets as well in your post!

Working on that now.... It seems to me that I do this every year, and then every year the committee throws out the notion of geo-match ups.

Edit: And the more I look at it the harder it is to do the 2nd round seed matchups. Since there really isn't any geographic sense to it we can all assume that they will probably match them up by the "best game" possible.

The only second round seed match that I can see would be the ODU/Norfolk matchup vs. Georgia Southern.

The calculator the committee uses can be found here as well if you want to be really accurate.

The funny thing about the seeds this year is that pretty much every team will have to be flown to each one... Without a CAA seed (which Towson still might grab) the North-easterly teams don't have a "home" seed to drive to.

That's pretty cool. I would think UCA and Liberty (assuming they make it) will definitely be playing in the first round instead of Maine and Old Dominion.

The winner of Maine/UNH will not play in the First Round IMO. Also, I'd have Stony Brook represented over Liberty.

Thank you, very nice link.
I agree with MaineJeff, the winner of Maine-New Hampshire should go to a "second" round game. Based upon past brackets I'd switch their winner out with the Liberty/Stony Brook winner. Though Liberty/App St does make for a close match up.

I also believe you're right pitting Montana, or Montana State, with a mid-west team (IN St, or IL St) rather than Wofford or another from further afield.

If Stoney Brook gets in over Liberty then this map will have to be readdressed.... As it is now Maine might be a victiom regionalization.... (if the picks are those in the map AND they use geography)

Can't get much closer than this:

From: LAFAYETTE COLLEGE
To: LEHIGH UNIVERSITY
Miles: 14.0

Though Drexel and Penn are like, uh, 20 feet from each other. Except Drexel axed football in 197?

14 miles apart? Wow, with only a few exceptions we don't even have High Schools that close together out here.

Yikes... well, you can actually see Lehigh from the top of South College (a main building).

A 9-2 Maine team would NOT be playing in the 1st Round.

Interesting things happen when Stony Brook usurps Liberty this weekend and takes the Big South title.... Here's the map.

Please remember that the selections here are for geography only... I have a hard time thinking that Maine will be forced into the first round...

In terms of match ups I was able to find a way to get Maine playing in Round 2.... But it would probably be against UNI (should they get the 5 seed)

Map has been updated to reflect this

Appattk you've done a nice job looking at feasable geographic match ups. It is pretty hard to juggle all the pieces and have them fit neatly. The one thing which stood out on your efforts is, the loser of the Maine - New Hampshire game likely goes to round one (with NH even having a slim chance of going home altogether), and with the winner advancing to round two. Yet I doubt both teams will be placed into round two. That said, you did an excellent job picking possible (likely?) games.

The Maine/UNH and the Liberty/Stony Brook games are BIG this weekend in terms of all these lineups...

But then again, like I said earlier.. I do this every year, and every year it makes sense in terms of saving $$$... And every year the real brackets look nothing like we put together here..

From what I can see in term changes would be....
If UNH loses, they will probably end up playing Albany in R1 AND Lehigh might get matched up to Stony Brook (Wonder what round this might be?)
If UNH wins, then they'll get shipped out to UNI, Maine would Albany, and again Lehigh and Stony Brook would probably get matched up...

So really... If Maine or UNH thinks about it... Would it be better to have a home game in R1? Or get to miss that week and possibly have to fly across the country in R2?

If Stony Brook wins, it would not be surprising to see them end up at Lehigh.

I just have a hard time seeing the selection committee NOT giving Lehigh a second round game... Stony Brook, should they win, is destined to play in the 1st Round.

Brackets with Stony Brook winning over Liberty... Putting teams into the actual seeds (Except for UNI at #5) is about impossible right now...

Albany/Stony Brook vs. #1 Montana St/Sam Houston St/Georgia Southern/North Dakota St
Illinois St vs. Montana

Wofford/Tenn Tech vs. #4 Montana St/Sam Houston St/Georgia Southern/North Dakota St
Maine vs. #5 UNI

Norfolk St/ODU vs. #3 Montana St/Sam Houston St/Georgia Southern/North Dakota St
Towson vs. ASU

Central Ark/Indiana St vs. #2 Montana St/Sam Houston St/Georgia Southern/North Dakota St
Lehigh vs. New Hampshire

Everything is farther apart out west. There are lots of Interstate highway exits signed as "ranch access" in Montana and "no services" in North Dakota.
