I think the Bearkats would do well to avoid taking any break in San Marcos. The bullseye has been on you for two weeks here on the board nationally, TT, but this final neighborhood feud gives the local guys a chance to take you down before the rest of the country gets its whacks. Texas State may not have many more chances to kick dirt on a Southland champ as they depart for the WAC.

I am grateful to SHSU for brightening our bleak local college football landscape and slapping UNM football around, thereby helping to shove the coach out of the door, midseason. I am pulling for an 11-0 Bearkat team to enter the playoffs. I want to see how the committee treats SHSU first, and then I want to see it get scheduled against an MVFC/Southern/CAA squad and win that first game, to demonstrate that each team has eleven a side and four quarters to perform. Once you are in the Q-finals, I think the 'kats could go anywhere.

One caveat- I wouldn't want SHSU to draw YSU, should they be selected. I married a Youngstown alum, followed them all year-- if chosen, they will have a head of steam and nothing to lose. I dont want to have one less team in the hunt going into the quarter-finals.

The thing that is scary about this Bearkat team is that it is full of underclassmen that are playing major roles in the success they have had this year. I am looking forward to this year’s playoffs and beyond.

It's also a play on them getting too big for their own good...hence, going 6-5 on an SLC slate when after we beat them at home on Saturday, they're off to "succeed" in greener pastures. Wouldn't expect a fan from Iowa (Northern Iowa, at that) to understand the situation. Now, if you have some kind of Texas roots, disregard the latter part of my post

Sam Houston State-Huntsville

That's not how that works. Southwest Texas State changed their name in hopes of becoming the flagship university for the Texas State University System which includes Sam Houston State U, Lamar U, and Sul Ross State (and I'm sure I'm missing others) because they have the largest enrollment out of the schools. They even bought the brand "Texas State" but their official name is Texas State University-San Marcos.

If you wanted to slight Sam, you'd call them "Texas State-Huntsville" but the Texas Legislature protected Sam Houston's name, SFA's name..and I think Lamar's name as well.

Who hates being called "Lafayette" because of that school in the Patriot League, who enjoys a healthy rivalry with Lehigh!

And Sul Ross...

Tarleton State and Prairie View A&M were protected first by the Legislature. SHSU followed in '07 with the remaining Texas 'legends' of SFA, Sul Ross, Lamar in '09.

It is about protecting the names of the other institutions within the Texas State University System and making sure that is absolutely clear that the institution in San Marcos is not the flagship nor perceived as the flagship. We all know Texas State University-San Marcos is equal, if not below SHSU when considering the factors related to flagship - something acknowledged a few years back by the student body president Kyle V. Morris and echoed in a 'flagship study' commissioned a year prior.

And I call Louisiana-Lafayette... ULL and not 'Louisiana' as they want to be called. :)

Article from University Star in San Marcos...

Orange and blue ribbons and signs that display Sam Houston’s 2011 accomplishments hang in football’s weight and training rooms, as well as a sign mocking an old university reputation, “I may miss a tackle, but I’ll never miss a party.”

Those tactics are set to give the Bobcats some extra motivation.

“Come out and expect to see a team fight hard,” cornerback Darryl Morris said. “Everyone’s going to be giving all they’ve got.”

The Bobcats are 4-1 at home this year, with their only loss a 23-20 defeat to Northwestern State on Homecoming. One of the biggest challenges facing Texas State is the Bearkats’ run defense, which ranks first in the Football Championship Subdivision.

From SHSU paper...

Fresh off a victory against the Northwestern State Demons, the football team celebrated winning their first undisputed Southland Conference title in school history on Saturday.

The celebration is over and the team is moving forward and setting their focus towards the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday and will be in search of their first undefeated season since 1956.

After the win last week against the Demons, Sam Houston (10-0, 7-0 in SLC) jumped to number 2 in this week's Sports Network Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) rankings, and was five votes shy of being tied with the current number one team, Montana State.

The team is also riding a current 12 game winning streak that is tied for the longest in school history (1955-57), as well as being the longest active streak in all of Division-I football.

Back to the game, TxSt has some athletes but is severely limited on offense. We held them to 200 yes with our little bunch of defenders.

I was in Austin in 2003 when the name change went through the Legislature, so I am pretty politically aware of the circumstances.

Further, the institution in San Marcos clearly states in their very own PR guidelines that they are to be referred to as 'Texas State University-San Marcos' on first reference. Seeing as I did not want to confuse anyone and actively promote utilizing the PR principles set forth by the school, it was critical to present the institution as it wants to be known as.

That is actually, not factual. It is not the case of the fans at ULL, as the institution itself asks to be referred to 'Louisiana'.

Your alma mater says to refer to them as 'Texas State University-San Marcos' on first reference, which is a far cry from ULL where they specifically ask for 'Louisiana' and no one else does it.

And jealousy? LOL... let's remember what TXST has done in football at the Division I level up to this point and going forward... and what SHSU has done to this point and going forward... to begin as you began your post, "there is a big difference between TXST and us".

In the 48-year history of the Southland Conference, only seven league championship teams have posted perfect regular season records. Saturday in San Marcos Sam Houston State will attempt to become the eighth.

The previous teams to achieve perfect regular season records have been Arkansas Sate 1970 (10-0) and 1975 (11-0) , Louisiana Tech in 1972 (11-0) and 1974 (10-0) and McNeese State in 1979 (11-0), 1995 (11-0) and 2007 (11-0).

Sam Houston already has clinched its first undisputed Southland football title sweeping to a 7-0 league record, out-scoring its league foes 308-67. The Bearkats are the first Texas Southland team to go unbeaten in conference play.

Other Southland teams to go unbeaten in league play have been McNeese State (1979, 1980, 1993, 1995, 2002, 2003 and 2007), Arkansas State (1975, 1986), Northeast Louisiana (1987 1989), Louisiana Tech (1982), Northwestern State (1988) and Troy State (2000) - all were non-Texas squads.

Speaking of the Bearkats, Tim Flanders is in range of some top marks...

RUNNING BACK TIM FLANDERS

Sophomore running back Tim Flanders, a candidate for the Walter Payton Award in 2011, leads the Southland Conference in rushing (100.10 yards) and scoring (120 points). He stands No. 2 in the nation in scoring and No. 22 nationally in rushing.

In 20 games as a Bearkat, Flanders already has set or tied four Sam Houston football records:

Most points, season: 120 (2011 - tied with Luther Turner)
Most TDs, game: 5 (2011 vs. New Mexico)
Most TDs, season: 20 (2011 - tied with Luther Turner)
Most career 100-yard rushing games: 12 (2010-11)
Most yards rushing by a freshman: 948 (2010)
Most 100-yard rushing games, season: 7 (2010)

Flanders ranks high in several other rushing and scoring catergories for the Bearkats.

Most rush TDs, season: 18 (2nd behind Luther Turner 20)
Most rush TDs, career: 31 (2nd behind Luther Turner 35)
Most rushing yards, season: 1,001 (8th, D.D. Terry 1,327 1st)
Most rushing yards, career: 1,949 (10th, Charles Harris, 2,688 1st)

There is a new sheriff in town and his name is Sam Houston State. After North Dakota State lost to Youngstown State, the Bearkats moved into the No. 1 spot in my ballot, with Montana State taking Sam Houston State’s old spot at No. 2.

Nice little write-up on the Bearkat seniors...

Sam Houston's 43-17 win over Northwestern State last Saturday was special for the entire Bearkat team. But it was especially sweet for the 12 seniors on the 2011 squad.

"It was just awesome, being a senior and being able to go out with a championship," Bearkat senior linebacker Kash David said following the victory. "That is what every senior in the Southland Conference and across the nation dreams about. They want to go undefeated and win a conference championship. My dream came true Saturday."

Bearkat head coach Willie Fritz gives much of the credit for the success of the Sam Houston State football team in 2012 to his 12 seniors.

"I'm really proud of our seniors," Fritz said. "I came in here a couple of years ago and they could have said 'who is this crazy guy running around here with all this energy and different kind of philosophy.' They embraced me and the coaching staff and they made it a heck of a lot quicker transition than a lot of people thought we would have."

Another write-up from San Marcos...

San Marcos — Saturday marks the end of two eras at Texas State.

The Bobcats bid farewell to 17 seniors, 16 of whom started at one point in their careers. Of those 16, nine started in the season opener against Texas Tech, including four offensive linemen (Michael Chambers, D.J. Hall, Steven Kenney and Jon Vernon).

“It hit me when I was riding over here on the bus to Tuesday’s practice,” said Hall, who has been a rock in the trenches for Texas State since he first started in 2008. “This is my last week wearing this uniform. It leaves a hollow space in my heart.”

One thing can fill the void in Hall’s chest — outside of the money he should be promised in the 2012 NFL Draft — and that’s an upset victory over Sam Houston State. The Bearkats, who enter the game with an unblemished record (10-0), are currently ranked No. 2 in the Football Championship Subdivision behind Montana State.

Post-gaem recap from SHSU...

Tim Flanders broke a Southland Conference scoring record and the Bearkat defense came up with big turnovers when it had to as Sam Houston State marched into the NCAA Division I FCS Playoffs with a perfect 11-0 record thanks to a 36-14 win over Texas State Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

Flanders carried 17 times for 132 yards and two touchdowns. The 100-plus performance marked his sixth 100-yard game of the season and the 13th of his career. His two touchdowns set a new Southland Conference record for both TDs (22) and points (132) in one season. Brent Grimes of Central Arkansas set the old mark of 21 touchdowns and 126 points in 2008.

Flanders also tied the Southland Conference and Sam Houston school records for rushing touchdowns with 20. Luther Turner of Sam Houston set the record in 1987. The victory also extends the Bearkats' winning streak to a school record 13 games in a row (going back to the final two games of 2010).

As Southland Conference champion, Sam Houston learns its NCAA playoff fate Sunday morning when the national championship brackets will be announced on ESPNU in a 9 a.m. telecast.

SAN MARCOS - Texas State on Saturday bumbled and fumbled away some chances to claim a victory in its final game as a member of the Football Championship Subdivision.

Sam Houston State, the FCS' second-ranked team, took full advantage of the miscues, rolling to a 36-14 victory in the regular-season finale in front of a crowd of 15,613 at Bobcat Stadium.

Trailing by three points with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, Texas State (6-6) lost fumbles on its next two possessions.

San Marcos Daily Record...

San Marcos — Texas State had an opportunity to seize momentum Saturday afternoon and run into the Football Bowl Subdivision from the Football Championship Subdivision with a monumental upset on its résumé.

Instead, the Bobcats will limp into the Western Athletic Conference after shooting themselves in the foot against second-ranked Sam Houston State — much like they did in their other five losses.

Texas State suffered three costly mistakes in the second half after closing an early lead by the Bearkats to three points at halftime. The Bobcats could only watch as Sam Houston State distanced itself with 16 points in the fourth quarter on the way to a 36-14 win.

SAN MARCOS — It was early in Willie Fritz’s first year as Sam Houston State football head coach, but not too long ago when the Bearkats were 0-2 after dropping games against Baylor and Western Illinois by a total of 73 points to start the 2010 season.

Following the postgame press conferences at Baylor’s Floyd Casey Stadium in the season opener, Fritz walked down the steep tunnel which separates the locker rooms from the field, with his hair in a mess from the play-calling headset.

Fritz studied a stat sheet, scratching his head with a look of confusion on his face. The longtime coach was not confused. Rather, he was trying to dissect his team, even after losing to a Big 12 opponent which seemed all but inevitable.

SAN MARCOS — With 10 straight victories already in their pockets, the second-ranked Sam Houston Bearkats weren’t going to be denied No. 11.

Tested by their longtime rivals, the Bearkats put an exclamation mark on their impressive regular-season run, having a record-setting day from tailback Tim Flanders and pulling away in the second half with 19 unanswered points to cruise past Texas State 36-14.

“I’m just so full of emotion right now. I’m proud of my team. I’m proud of myself. I’m proud to be a Bearkat right now,” Kats sophomore defensive end Preston Sanders said excitedly. “We knew we needed to win. We came out here and did what we had to do.”
