FUBeAR had no training for this type of work, but he was fortunate enough to just happen to work for them on a broadcast in SC one time (via an FU connection) and the Assoc. Producer liked FUBeAR’s ‘just get it done; don’t ask a lot of questions’ approach, so FUBeAR got ‘on the list.’

Anyway … one of FUBeAR’s roles was to work with Billy Packer during NCAA Hoops tournaments. In those prehistoric days, FUBeAR’s job was to sit beside Billy and put a small magnetic basketball  in the spot on a tablet-sized metal board painted like a hoops court from which each shot was taken (different colors for made/missed). Billy used this, occasionally during timeouts to show shot-selection / success, so it had to be handy to him at all times - hence FUBeAR’s front row mid-court seat. He always used it at halftime as well.

Anyway2 - Billy was always pleasant, respectful, and great to work for - in FUBeAR’s experience. He was funny (not PC enough for today though) and a guy’s guy, who really loved what he was doing. The people around him (including NCAA Coaches) seemed to like and enjoy him quite a bit. Sure, he had an ego and, in a pressure situation, he might be demanding - kinda like a QB or a Point Guard or a Head Coach. If you can’t take some of that, you shouldn’t be involved with Sports or Sports TV.

FUBeAR very much enjoyed the games and the times he was blessed to have worked with Billy Packer. Wish he could do it again…but, alas, magnetic basketballs on TV, and Mr. Packer are no more.

Watching my pop's for almost 30 years in the broadcast booth, I can assure you the SPOTTERS are the ones that make the broadcaster look good!!!! And based on Billy's hairline....you had work to do! ha
