NW St's Pittman to the Ravens

A few articles about David Pittman, who was selected by the Baltimore Ravens during the third round of yesterday's draft. The Ravens feel he can be the third cornerback on their squad...

NATCHITOCHES — Their relationship was less than an hour old, and already, Northwestern State All-American cornerback David Pittman and his new defensive coordinator, Rex Ryan of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens, were on the same page Saturday night.

Pittman, a 6-0, 182-pound Gramercy native and Lutcher High School product, was the 87th overall pick in Saturday’s NFL Draft, going to Baltimore in the third round. Ryan expects him to become the team’s third cornerback, filling the vital nickelback position in the Ravens’ defensive scheme.

Pittman was a starter for Northwestern State since his freshman year, and in 43 games, he snagged 11 interceptions, broke up 26 passes, scored four touchdowns (three on interception returns) and helped the Demons win 28 of 47 games, along with the 2004 Southland Conference championship and Division I-AA playoff trips in 2002 and 2004.

He was the only Division I-AA player invited to play in the 2006 Senior Bowl, where he turned heads in practice and with a solid showing among the 100 top prospects in the game. Saturday, he was the fourth I-AA player selected, behind only Alabama State quarterback Tavaris Jackson (64th pick, third round to Minnesota), Weber State offensive tackle Paul McQuistan (69th pick, third round to Oakland) and Cal Poly All-America defensive end Chris Gocong (71st pick, third, round, Philadelphia).

Northwestern State cornerback David Pittman spent most of the day at his mother's house in Gramercy watching the NFL draft on television with friends, wondering what team would select him Saturday.

The second round went by and he still was on the board. At that point, Pittman just wanted to be selected.

Then, he got a phone call from Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome telling Pittman the Ravens were going to select him with the 87th pick of the draft in the third round.

"It was a big relief," said Pittman, who played at Lutcher High School.

Pittman said he knew the Ravens were interested in him, but he also received interest from the Washington Redskins and he visited the Miami Dolphins and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Nice to know that the Ravens like players from Louisiana. B.J. Sams was picked by them in 2003 and he is their starting kick returner and punt returner. Sams and Pittman can talk of college day fun when McNeese and Northwestern played each other.
