Extra Point - Glanville, Hatcher make biggest FCS coaching news

By Matt Dougherty, FCS Editor

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - What does a 65-year old former NFL head coach with one of the loudest personalities in the business have to do with a fast-rising young coach that just spent the last seven seasons building a Division II powerhouse?

Before February 28, the answer would be nothing. But on that day, Jerry Glanville was hired to bring his NFL expertise to get Portland State’s program to make the next step to enter the FCS elite. That made Glanville the biggest name in the offseason FCS coaching carousel, just eclipsing Chris Hatcher, the emerging head coach in his early 30s that is now entrusted with bringing Georgia Southern’s storied program back to prominence and national titles.

While Glanville and Hatcher will receive the most attention in the 2007 season, their tasks are as different as their backgrounds. Glanville takes over a Portland State program that historically comes up just shy of making major gains both on the field and at the box office. Glanville has already made an impact at the box office and in the media by producing plenty of preseason hype, and he has the potential for a big year on the field with a team that finished 7-4 against a brutal schedule last year.
