No surprise. Billings and Missoula are probably the two most populated places plus they have 6 NAIA and two FCS schools and ZERO FBS schools....its the only game in town. Same thing here in Arkansas. We may have triple the population but we have 15 football schools- 7 division II, two FCS, two FBS, two NAIA, two smaller school levels also. We're either pushed aside by the big schools or fans are spread out over all those lower level schools. Just doesnt make for building a good fan base when fans fall for the SEC hyoe yearly...Montana residents probably don't have that problem.

Congrats to the Griz. Some great fans out there. The numbers aren't entirely accurate however when some on the list have to factor in home attendance for playoff games. Those almost always hurt normal regular season numbers . JMU's reg season home game attendance this past year was 21,646-almost 1800 per game higher before factoring in the two home playoff games.

If not for having to move the North Greenville game to Greenville because of Hurricane Matthew, The Citadel was the designated home team, El Cid would have been 17th with 12,986 per game.

It really helps not to be surrounded by FBS although some schools do rise above that challenge. I think ISU Redbirds attendance upside is always limited as there are 6 Big Ten schools basically within a 3 hour drive (including one 45 minutes away) of Bloomington/Normal. On occasion the Bloomington/Normal local McDonalds will be using Big Ten cups to fill drinks on a weekend when ISU has a home game.

Is there a link to the list somewhere? Just checked ncaa.com, not there.

This'll do it (although it took me around 10 minutes fishing through the NCAA.org website): http://stats.ncaa.org/reports/attendance?id=15140

They had four home games according to espn.com. Four different neutral site games too.

Hmmm....Montana averaged more at each individual home game than we had total at all of ours....yea...sounds about right.
