SWAC/MEAC/HBCU 2018 Offseason Thread
Since there aren't many HBCU posters on the board it'll be easier to put our offseason news under one thread.

Re: SWAC/MEAC/HBCU 2018 Offseason Thread
Any rumors of HBCU schools moving to new conferences or up or down in classification?

The only wild card in the schedule is Hampton. The Pirates, who have been MEAC title contenders in recent years, in November announced a move to the Big South, to be completed in July. A source in FAMU's athletic department said the Pirates are looking to immediately drop their MEAC schedule.
Interesting. Real interesting.

Nothing really. There has been rumblings on Virginia State possibly moving up to join the MEAC but that's about it.

That痴 kind of crappy to leave the rest of the league in the lurch like that.

I'm not an expert on scheduling, but how can Hampton get by with that? Don't they normally have to wait at least a year? Pretty hard to fill in those open dates for MEAC teams. Isn't there at least a monetary penalty?

My guess would be there is some type of monetary penalty. Hampton had been a pain in the arse of the MEAC for some time and many members were ready for them and pain in the arse number 2 aka Delaware State to kick rocks.

They can do it as we've been rotating two teams off the schedule since SSU joined. It's possible they could do it especially since a exit fee has to be negotiated between Hampton and the MEAC Co-Ceo's. There isn't a set exit fee in the by-laws.

Re: SWAC/MEAC/HBCU 2018 Offseason Thread
If they drop without giving the MEAC a chance to rearrange the schedule for the 8 teams playing Hampton, it creates a huge cluster F. So there should be penalty.

Did you see the statement from Dr.Harvey saying that Hampton still wants in on the Celebration Bowl even as a member of the Big South? Hampton is about to become everybody's headache

HU should have been told the move will take effect 7/1/2019
When VMI went from SoCon to Big South (and vice versa), the announcements were done about 17-18 months before the switch actually happened....so no disaster of Conf. scheduling....

How exactly have they been a pain in the past?

Hampton has played the "we'll take our ball and go home" card since about 2005 or so. At some point your conference mates will finally tell you to get the hell on!

MEAC-SWAC Challenge is back to a neutral site for 2018. NC Central vs. Prairie View at Georgia State Stadium.

They've been trying to leave the conference for quite some time now.

They will be like TnSU on the outside looking in.
MEAC champ vs SWAC champ. It's clear as mud.

If I was the MEAC Commissioner I'd tell Dr. Harvey sure you can participate in the Celebration Bowl..... as a member of the MEAC.

They didn't appear to tack on a rental fee to the tickets as it looks as Honda footed the Benz rental fee.

+1. I think that turned a lot of good folks away from The CB.

CB went without a sponsor this year I believe. Hopefully we can land a long-term sponsor this year moving forward

Correct.
Southern University's Athletic Director (Roman Banks) mentioned on the Carlos Brown Radio Show in an interview that the SWAC Championship Game is on for 2018 and the higher seeded team will host the game.

Nice matchup. This should revitalize the Circle City Classic after 4 years of Central State and Kentucky State.

I hope it draws well w/ the locals. I'm not so sure both of those fan-bases travel well.

The locals show pretty well. It has been the locals which have carried attendance the last 4 years with the D2 matchup. Howard has a nice "Big Game" fan base. The Bison fans show up for big Classics not sure about BCU though.

I hope the other bison faithful are more faithful than I am. I attend a (H) game once every 2 or so years on Ga Ave. Naturally, my focus is on helping right the historical wrongs of the undergrad PV. I did the CCC while attending State@gradSch and living in the CMH. I think that was a JSU/FAMU get together and it was paaaaaaaaaaacked > 57K+, if memory serves correct. Truly enjoyed the game, atmosphere, and entire w/e.

The Circle City Classic will always be packed with a decent matchup because it occurs during Black Expo Weekend in Indy. Even with Central State and Kentucky State the game drew 35,000+ for those 4 years.

Local media there balked due to those 35K #s vs those historical 55- ~62/63K+ #s.
Sidebar: how is football recruiting going for AlaSU?

Recruiting is going well but then again we've always signed good classes. It's getting the production on the field that has given us issues.
