You don't really understand how little people in New England care about college football, do you? This is why I think Maine should drop to the NEC. Doesn't matter if they are #1 in the country or going 2-10 against Bryant and Sacred Heart, you'll get the same 4000-6000 at every game.

Lehigh and Maine have little to no shot at a home playoff game based on those attendance figures. Does attendance/ potential gate come into play in setting the top 5 seeds, either explicitly or otherwise? If it does, SHSU may end up as #5 with their showing yesterday.

Aside from a few outliers (Montana, App St, Deleware etc) people (particularly in the Northeast) really don't go to FCS games anymore. It's sad but a reality.

What else is there to do in Delaware? Other than tax-free shopping and Blue Hens football, this is what comes to mind when I think of DE:

People in Massachusetts (or New England) will go to FBS games...maybe not in great numbers (see BC who draws around 35K most weeks) but in far greater numbers than they will to go to Harvard (38,000 seating capacity) or Holy Cross (25,000 seating capacity) games. It's a generational thing (amoungst many other factors)...both Holy Cross and Harvard would both draw 20K or 30K regularly into the 1980's...not so much anymore... outside of a "special occassion" i.e. a night game or the Yale game at Harvard Stadium.

Many more diversions for people these days than 15-30 years ago. Definite cultural change all over--especially in the northeast. However, whether Maine or Lehigh get a home game depends what they bid. Even if only 7000 expected, if the school wants to guarantee a specific number and take the 'loss' they might still do it.

I think they'll draw quite well. I don't know if they can top the start by ODU or UTSA, but I don't expect the start to be nearly as bad as Georgia State.

NC is a college basketball state with a few schools that have had success in football. I posted this in another thread, but Charlotte has a chance to make some noise in the media if they are successful early. I believe the city of Charlotte wants a college football team to rally around, and the Niners could be that team. Again, the key will be if they can capitalize on the initial influx of fans and do enough to keep those fans coming back.

Georgia State was never going to strike it big in the attendance department because 1) Georgia is a college football state with established programs in UGA and GT in the BCS and GSU in the FCS and 2) Atlanta is one of the worst sports cities in America.

You forgot to include the 6,253 that saw Georgia State lose to D2 West Alabama. It probably wasn't included in the numbers because G-State played AT West Alabama. An FCS traveling TO a D2 school to receive a butt whipping. What a joke.

Still surprised by just 6,044 at Lehigh for the Patriot League title ...not to mention the fact that Georgetown brought its largest road crowd in a decade to see it. How many home fans actually showed up?

I'm watching the replay now. It sure as heck seems like there was more than 6,044 people there.

Just caught a really good angle of the crowd, no way was there only 6,044 there. The away side was boarderline half full which would be 3-4k alone.

I was at the game. There were virtually no students there, other than the players and cheerleaders on the field, and the Marching 97. There were about a couple thousand seats empty on the home side. As far as the Georgetown crowd is concerned, I was surprised and impressed to see how many they brought. They had about 800-1000 on their side, not 3-4k.
I estimated the attendance between 6,500-7,000. Last week's 9,200 was bogus. That game had at least 3000-3500 on the away side with the home side packed and the hill scattered with plenty of fans. I would have guessed 11k+ at least for the HC game.

Too bad they don't count it. That number is bigger than the actual attendance for GA State's home games in the GA Dome.

Amen! Its simple people in the Northeast are just cynical..period. People think your odd or nuts if you attend a college game and didn't go to that College. I live and breath UNH Football and I never attended College let alone UNH. I love living in NH and very proud of UNH. But man when I am on the road say... Cincinnati the Sports Bar are packed with memorabilia from every College team in the area.

Now go to Alabama or Georgia you name it 50 to 80 percent of people attending those games never attended the University. (Its a fact Sports Illustrated did a great article on this exact situation about 5 years ago Ill post it if I can find it)

I am sure I am gonna here it from the young crowd here but Its just a fact I live it. I haven't been to all 57 states like Obama but Ill tell ya this I have been to around 40 many times..

Though on a positive note... things seem to be changing, 10 years ago you couldn't even see a UNH game on TV (The rare Dartmouth game with horrible coverage must have turned everyone off) Now you can see every UNH game between the Web and Comcast. So time will tell I think over time we will see it get better but not much I still live in a state where Sports Bars on Saturday are packed with people watching cars drive in a circle for 3-4 hours.

Go Cats..

JMU sets (obviously) a record for averaging just over 25,000 this year ... with 4 of the 5 games being sellouts (the Maine game sandwiched between homecoming and family weekend being the lone game that didn't sellout). Prior to the season the AD said that 22k would be great ... but 25k is pretty remarkable ... seating capacity is 24,877.

I think you're wrong big time. Charlotte is an NFL town first of all. Secondly, you have to remember the attitude of this fan base. Those of them that really do follow the school (which is a very small number when compared to their graduates) hold a pretentious disrespect for the FCS as a whole. Not the kind of disrespect many App fans show in light of our unprecedented success, but more of an ignorant outsider view of the league being second rate. They perceive the FCS as unworthy of their presence.

This is a school that competes in a half-way decent basketball conference. Though UNCC is the perennial bottom feeder, the A-10 has some big names as far as NCAA BBall is concerned. These are names that are heard a good bit more than FCS football playing schools nation wide. Even with these big names coming to town every year, UNCC never has more than 5,000 people in attendance. Will a group that doesn't show up when well known competition is in town show up when they host programs their fan base has never heard of or doesn't respect? It seems doubtful.

When determining if UNCC will mirror the success of ODU or the lackluster start of GaSt, it's important to highlight the similarities the schools share before hand. GaSt and UNCC are both in(near) major cities. It is partly because of this that their fan bases have made a habit of talking up their future program and belittling the division. I don't recall ODU fans sharing such an attitude. When they began to show success, their fanship grew, not the other way around.

I believe that UNCC's bandwagon will be huge at first. They will probably get 15k or so to their first game. When they begin to lose games to teams that have no respect for, the place will be more desolate than their BBall venue. In order to built a successful program from the ground up, dues have to be paid. UNCC's fanbase will not accept what they can realistically accomplish, therefore they're destined to fail in my humble opinion.

Yeah and remember how many fans were saying "the new stadium looks nice, but what will it look like with only 17K there?" One group of fans (from another FCS school) said this over and over and over. I won't call them out but needless to say, they were wrong. We didn't expand just for the hell of it.
