14-0 Furman after 1 quarter.

ASU with 3 first downs, two punts and two INTs.

Furman with 128 yards, 2 TDs and a fumble in the red zone.

No lead is too big against ASU though with their potent offense.

I'm listening to the Furman announcers on their audio stream and these guys have got to be some of the worst color commentators ever. They can't get the App players names right. They keep calling Jackson, Presley...can't get the running backs names right or the guys on defense. It's absolutely confusing.

That's what happens when you have an extremely young team. They're learning right now that just because you get a signature win to put you in the driving seat for a title, you're still going to get everybody's best shot, and if you don't match their intensity, this happens.

Yeah, not sure score is indicative of play. Two To's in the redzone and an awful fieldgoal attempt really killed us. Furman has really taken advantage and that's the difference.

insideout08
November 5th, 2011, 01:44 PM
ASU is now 8 of 11 on third downs, keeping some long drives alive. Furman has brought the blitz on most every third down, and while it has worked a few times, Jackson has evaded pressure and completed passes on numerous occasions.

Reign of Terrier

If Furman can grind it out in the second half (which I'd fully expect them to do) and burn some clock.....ASU could be in trouble.

Yeah, would not expect that score from those stats. Yards are pretty even, so it's turnovers and opportunism (and some reffing, but GSU fans won't let you use that excuse this week). Take care of the ball in the second half, get the momentum back and you should be fine.

And, dang, way to go Paladins. Wish I could see this game.

Furman has a few more total yards despite running 40% as many plays. So you have to keep that in mind with respect to the totals. It will be interesting to see if Furman can put drives together to keep the defense from wearing down too badly in the 2nd half.

We played a pretty solid game that the stats don't show. I'm not ready to go all chattownmocs, but we weren't all that bad.

Terrible coaching, bad side of the officiating today, and putting ourselves in a hole due to turnovers. This game easily could have gone a different way today, but it didn't. I still think this team can win a championship this season and I think a late season loss a lot of times helps more than it hurts in terms of motivation.

Good game Furman

p.s. lets hope Jackson isn't seriously hurt.

That was a very, very gutsy performance by Furman's defense. Did they totally shut App down? No. But they limited them to one TD and made a ton of huge stops despite being on the field practically the whole game.

Ask the rest of your fans if your o-line allowing pressure wasn't a big reason you lost (just like that SACK)
That's a big difference from "total domination". No doubt you guys deserve the win, but 6 trips inside the 20 and 10 points have more to do with it. Your team was prepared and really deserved to win. But zero points in the second half , come on with your domination crap

Here is my exact quote: "Your lines were dominated today."

You rushed 39 times for 87 yards and gave up three sacks.

We ran the ball 12 straight times for 65 yards and essentially iced the game.

The game certainly wasn't "total domination". The line play was a huge reason for Furman's win.

Good game, Furpies. Saw this one coming after the huge win last weekend. Not to sound too much like chattownmocs, but Furple didn't win this game as much as ASU screwed up over and over and over again.... on both sides of the ball.

Pathetic performance by the oline, the coaching staff (play calling) and the JJ. They should still make the playoffs, but it's one and done this year, fellas.

I think ASU really needs to address this play calling issue. We haven't really been the same since Satterfield left, but the talent has improved.

Hopefully this and the Wofford loss will cause us to look into that this offseason. It's hard to remember a game where we have lost and I really felt we called the best game we could have.

-GSU last year
-Villanova
-Wofford
-Furman

All big losses for us. All very poor effort by the offensive coaching in terms of play calling. I gave us a pass early on in the season due to being young at WR and OL, but today was really disappointing.

Agree. But you can't say a team that outgains you 399-365 is dominated. Other than that last possession did you have any real production in the second half. I'm not one of those fans that tries to find moral victories, Furman deserved the win, period. Good luck the rest of the way.

We're probably arguing semantics. I didn't say your team was dominated, just your lines. I know injuries have hurt your OL. Maybe handled is a less demonstrative term that fits better?

Jackson did a good job of countering pressure with the short passing game.

Good game Furmies.

ASU was able to move the ball but could not convert in the red zone to save their lives. Furman played well and ASU looks like a young team that has not yet learned how to play on the road.

On the bright side, ASU brought a great crowd down to Greenville and the SoCon looks like a 4-bid league for the first time in years.

Owner of Carolina Cement lives in Landrum and works out of the Clinton office. Neat that he not only gave love to the App NC but also to Furman and GSU's championships. Very cool.

Your team is great, but I hope you can do something to get the crowds back like you had them in the 80's. Appalachian does have to do something about our 1st down play calling. I don't know what the actual figure is but watching the game, it sure felt like about 75% of our 1st downs were a hand-off to Cadet up the gut. I understand not wanting to put too much on JJ after the early interceptions but we have to be more creative than that. The decision to punt the ball on 4th and 7, down 2 scores with 7:00 remaining was frustrating as well.

Just like everyone else, attendance is hurting in down years. Few more seasons of winning teams like this one, and we'll be back in the game.

Furman does, though, draw a lot from out of state, and is still a small school. So, it really isn't terribly suprising. A lot of students didn't hear of Furman until college visits, much less follow the team.

About as accurate as can be said. Furman controled the line of scrimage on both sides of the ball. They once again were a very good bend but don't break defense. "Steed and the Paladin secondary combined to limit Appalachian State wide receiver Brian Quick to just four catches for 60 yards. Two of Quick's four catches went for a combined 35 yards on the Mountaineers' final drive, when the game's outcome was all but sealed."

"In recording three sacks today versus Appalachian State, Furman upped its season sacks tally to 21. Last year Furman ranked last in the SoCon with nine sacks."

Great to have a good defensive mind back in the driver's seat.

The more I think about it, the more infuriating the decision to punt the ball away with 7:00 left becomes. Doubt it would have made any difference but it is the principle. You are down two scores in the 4th, why the hell are you concerned with a few yard of field position? If they somehow able to convert and at least get 3 on the board, it makes it a one score game and actually puts some pressure on Furman.

That call really was this game in a nutshell. No boldness or creativity at all in our offensive game plan. We were not the aggressor.

It is interesting particularly in light of Furman's ability to put games away. One of bright spots for the Furman offense which, as you saw, isn't flashy, but physical, is the ability to drain time off the clock in the fourth quarter. They had similar drives against Wofford and App State to pretty much put the game away. I don't think it was a bad decision, though. Your defense was lights out most of the game. You give it over on downs at midfield, you all but giving Furman the chance to put the game out of reach.

A Comment on the stats (although it really doesn't even need to be addressed) Furman has won three games this year where they didn't win the stat battle (like I said who cares). Citadel, WC and ASU. Al three games were similar in one aspect. FU jumped to an early lead and then, in what appears to be classic Fowler strategy, said I think our defense can stop you well enough to keep the play calling safe. While I would like to score, I will protect the lead. In all three cases it worked.

I think you are quite right. Furman gets an early lead, will not give up big plays, and then forces their opponent to play perfect on offense to beat them. Our offense isn't explosive, but it does just what it needs to...drains the clock.

I also get the impression we could be more successful on offense, but choose to play ball control. We saw against App and UTC that our offense can score quickly when it wants or needs to. At the end of the day, I think Fowler is perfectly happy to get a two score lead, play ball control offense, and unleash his defense. It's really worked well for him so far.

the stat battle is meaningless except for three things. 5 red zone trips and two scores and 4 turnovers that FU did turn into 13 points and the last thing is the score.
In a perverse sort of way its nice to have FU bask as a tough opponent. Plus this should continue to have JM reevaluate what we are doing and I see coanching changes in the works.

the stat battle is meaningless except for three things. 5 red zone trips and two scores and 4 turnovers that FU did turn into 13 points and the last thing is the score.
In a perverse sort of way its nice to have FU bask as a tough opponent. Plus this should continue to have JM reevaluate what we are doing and I see coanching changes in the works.

Focus on the next two games and hope we get into the playoffs.

I agree, The stat battle is good to analyze why you lost or won. My point on the yardage stat it has to be taken into consideration with where the score was most of the game.

The turnovers in this one are important and ASU's inability to score TDs.

On the turnovers, the first one was a fanatastic d play with a lucky bounce. I honestly thought that was going to be a TD for ASU. The second one was another great d play with the defender making a receiver type catch to get the ball. Can't even remember what the third one was (old age I guess)

Tks. I'm a little concerned about that too.

Yep, Spoke with Sideline Shooter before the game (BTW very nice to meet you) and his concern was ASU's intensity level after the GSU game. My concern is our intensity level after three big do or die weeks. IF we have a let down, I hope it is in Gainesvillexnodx

I've been to every game, home and away, all year. I started following App State my freshman year at App State. What exactly makes me a terrible fan?

So, reading through this thread today, I'm struck by the delicious irony. Sounds like App got a taste of some of the medicine that we got last week. Also saw several mentions of a "bad call" against GSU as well....looks some people finally opened their eyes to fact. What remains to be seen is if App will be labeled "whiners" and told to "stfu and move on" much like they did to GSU last week. I will not be saying these things to them, because I know the refs in our conference are awful and like to insert themselves into the outcome of games.

In any case, it looks like Furman took advantage of the weaknesses I saw in App last week that we couldn't. They also did what they had to do on offense. Congratulations to Furman and thanks once again. I knew the result before our game was over and was hoping they wouldn't announce it until the game was over but they announced the score during Citadel's last drive and I thought that would be enough to make us lose focus and screw up.....and I was close to being right.

Seriously the game is over we took an L.. We played our heart out against GSU and FU exposed the weaknesses that we have been trying to cover up all season.. Will we make the Playoffs? Def, the only question is how far will we go.. Personally I believe ASU is a team that no one really wants to face when it comes down to it..

Good game to FU and I can only hope that we work out the kinks over the next two weeks and finish strong

You lost.....to us. End of discussion. And you can barely win in Paulson highschool stadium. Go jerk off on Erk Russel's face and stare at your dusty, 90's trophies. It only took you two decades to make it back to the top of the conference. Congrats bro xbowx

Go hide your head in a hole now.

I have no issues saying our team lost to Furman.
I also have no issues saying we physically handled GSU a week earlier.

Why put our heads in a hole? Batting .500 with those teams sounds good to me, since you were #1 and undefeated and all.

We didn't get beat by the refs. I haven't read the whole thread... but, if any App fan is saying that-- they are just as wrong and ridiculously obnoxious as the Georgia Southern fans were all last week.

If the App fans start threads and discuss the refs from the Furman game all this week... I'll react the same way to them as I did to y'all. It's ridiculous.

We were beaten by a better team that whooped us from the beginning to the end of the game. Refs had nothing to do with it.

There was a call or two I disagreed with, but if you're truly a better team the refs should be a relative non-factor. Congrats to the Paladins since they were clearly the better team yesterday. xbowx

I agree that the refs did not lose us the game. I credit our red zone Offense play calling more than anything for the L. I do however feel that we were screwed by the refs more so the GaSo was. There was really only one call the refs blew in the GaSo game that majorly effected the outcome. We had a few yesterday. The Forcier fumble and the missed helmet to helmet were huge.

Refs:25%
Red Zone play calling: 50%
Coming out flat in the first quarter: 25%

I won't be crying unless we lose to WCU

Were there terrible calls by the refs? Yes, it is the SoCon. Did we lose because of the refs? Absolutely not. Furman out played us and deserved to win, end of discussion.

I have not read the entire thread but any ASU fan who blames this loss on the refs needs to wake up, just like I said to the GSU fans last week. I had no problem with GSU pointing out a bad call the week before. My issue was with GSU fans refusing to admit they had been defeated, claiming that they were beaten not by ASU but by the officials.

The better team won in Boone last weekend and in Greenville this weekend. Simple as that.

When an opposing team blames the refs for a loss, you know they got whipped. Blaming the play calling is also over rated. Play calling didn't limit your running game to 2.2 yards per carry, nor did it pick off passes or sack your quarterback. Furman's defense did.

And lets be honest, it is not as though Furman played a perfect game here. Missed a field goal, missed an extra point, turned it over deep in their own territory, etc.

I've already stated ASU was outcoached and outplayed. That said the predictability of the playcalling did hurt ASU offensively. ASU ran up the middle on over 80% of the first downs, I'm sure the Furman fans noted this as well. ASU actually did well on 3rd downs considering the OC put them in 3rd and long positions. Furman's defense played well, but some of that was due to the lack of creativity, especially on 1st down.

Ha! That's fine. You guys certainly did dominate parts of the game. Our run game was nonexistent. You couldn't do much to stop our passing game though. Luckily for you, once we for in the red zone the coaches only called run plays. Congrats on your first win over App in a while.

To you and Saint, re the passing game and third down. Every third down, we blitzed. 4 out of 5 times we didn't get to your QB and you completed the first down pass. On the fifth time, we pressured your qb and you didn't complete. i.e. lots of yards, no scores. The way it is suppose to workxnodx:D
