October 15th, 2011, 01:05 PM
Kickoff scheduled for 1 pm MDT from Montana's Washington Grizzly Stadium. A battle between two teams with one loss each in conference play. Portland State comes in to the game off of a loss last week at home to Montana State while Montana was demolishing Idaho State on the road. The Grizzlies only conference loss was to Sacramento State on the road earlier in the year. Connor Kavanaugh will get the start for the Vikings at quarterback while the Grizzlies will counter with Oregon native Jordan Johnson. Portland State has not won in Missoula since they were a DII squad in 1987. The Grizzlies coach, Robin Pflugrad is a Vikings alum, having played for Portland State in the early 80's under Mouse Davis. Last year, the Grizzlies won on a last second field goal, 23-21, in Hillsboro. Weather should be partly cloudy with temps near 60 at game time.

One helluva ballgame - the Vikings came out fast and furious, and the Griz were flat (at 13-0, the Griz had something like seven yards total offense). They had a few early opportunities that they didn't capitalize on - another incredibly impressive performance by PSU, unfortunately once again in a loss (they gave the Cats everything they could last weekend).

jalmond - a tough loss to take, but you guys were damned impressive. Burton seems to be doing some good things for the program!

Jordy had it basically the entire game; I think Forde/Montana snuck in once or twice, but not sure.

interesting.

Hmm, I thought Forde got in. Looks like Moutra had the one trick play throw/interception, and Nate was 0/1.

comp/att yds avg td int
Jordan Johnson 10/18 128 7.1 0 0
Antwon Moutra 0/1 0 0.0 0 1
Nate Montana 0/1 0 0.0 0 0

Thanks for the kind words. Burton is not much for moral victories but I think if we are this close to Montana and Montana State, we are really close to being relevant in the conference again. While many people would be please with staying close to Montana at Wash-Griz (I know I'm one), Burton is always looking for ways to get better and there are things to build on from this loss.

indeed, a good showing from portlandia.

montana has fallen from grace a bit, but pulling a road win at wa-griz still ain't easy...

Wash-Griz is still one of the toughest venues in all of FCS. Even if you play an A game, you won't win if you aren't any good. I am encouraged that we did make mistakes but had a shot at the end. Too many penalties (although due to the noise, only one personal foul) and too many field goals. To win at Wash-Griz, you need touchdowns, not field goals.
