Offense Wins Spring Game 26-20

The defense built an 18-0 lead, then the offense scored 26 unanswered points to win South Dakota State’s spring football game 26-20 Saturday at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

The defense stopped the offense on five three-down-and-out series (two points each), recorded two tackles for losses (two points) and had a fumble recovery by redshirt freshman defensive tackle Steve Bazata, Howells, NE, (six points) to get its lead.

The offense scored on a 3-yard run by redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Crawford, Oro Valley, AZ, and a 50-yard pass play from Ryan Berry, Watertown, to Micah Johnson, Prescott, AZ, added points for plays over 30 yards – a 32 yard pass to Chris Doblar, Brookings, and the 50-yard pass to Johnson, plus a 35-yard run by Anthony Watson, Worthington, MN. . . . It was a good day to catch it on the airwaves, as it was rainy and getting dangerous for the players.

Sounds like they're going to be pretty tough defensively. And looking to get up to speed offensively.

Knowing two of their top quarterbacks were already sitting out Saturday's spring game, it's understandable why a big hit on backup Ryan Berry sucked the air out of South Dakota State's coaches and fans.

But Berry, who started two games in 2005 for the oft-injured Andy Kardoes, used it as motivation to rally the offense to a 26-20 victory. . . . (read more)

The show must go on on

BY MIKE JOHNSON

The SDSU football team wrapped up its spring season Saturday with a spirited game at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Though a complex scoring system left the final score in question, head coach John Stiegelmeier said who won was secondary to getting a chance to see what his team could do in real game action, and making sure that no one was forced to the sidelines due to injury, which was a difficult task considering the conditions. . . .
