Announced today that no tickets are currently available. Athletic office said Lafayette has been given their allocation. IF Lafayette does not use their entire allocation, those returned seats will be made available based upon a waiting list.

It was also announced that a decision will be made the week of the game as to whether additional, temporary stands will be added and/or seating allowed on the grass horseshoe. I think this will be driven by the weather forecast and the demand.

if it follows past practice,if ground not saturated or covered with snow, bleachers will be put up if waiting list big enuf. I would guess that the list will be quite long this year. May be we'll get some tickets back from Lafayette

Bets to keep the game interesting

1- Over/under 400 yards for Lum

2- Will the pards cover the 28 point spread?

3- Will Frank have an epic sideline meltdown?

Bogus Megapardus
October 13th, 2011, 01:41 PM
Tavani always has a meltdown. The bet should be whether he remains cool and collected in the face of adversity.

BTW this thread could devolve very quickly, knowing the parties involved. It's a bit early in the season.

About 20,000 if the endzone seating to the left is included. It always has sold out.

Awesome news! Whats the stadium capacity? Does it usually sell out?

Despite a recent sharp decline in home attendance (at least at Lehigh), Lehigh-Lafayette always sells out. This is the 12th straight year that the game has been sold out in advance, according to Lehigh Athletics. Goodman Stadium at Lehigh holds 16,000 with additional room on a grass horseshoe behind the South endzone. Fisher Field holds 13,100 but Lafayette always adds up to 3,500 additional seats for The Rivalry.

Looks like 4 in a row for the Brown and White!

Don't get ahead of yourself there, '11. This year will be my 22nd L-L game and they rarely unfold as one might expect. The 'rivalry' factor plays big in this series.

Well intentioned and from the heart, but in need of amendments and corrections. To wit

1. This is the 12th straight year that the game has sold out at Badman. Since this is only the 12th time that the game has been played in the Hellertown Toilet, that means it has been sold out there every time it has been played there. Going back to the on-campus mausoleum that preceded it, the sellouts stretch back much further. The same is true in Easton. As I noted in another post, I cannot remember the last time this game was not sold out, no matter how bad either or both teams was/were.

2. Can't speak for Badman, but temporary seating has been added only once for this game at the new Fisher Stadium. That was in 2006.

is this similar to:

1. The big three - Harvard, Yale and Princeton?

and

2. The little three - Williams, Amherst and Wesleyan?

That is exactly where it came from. The Middle Three existed for 50 years, until Lehigh lost the friggin' cannon.

The home stands of Taylor, upper deck, were demolished. The lower concrete stands were covered and planted mostly with grass and some shrubbery to form the south side of the large courtyard/plaza for the Rauch Business School that now stands where the west endzone and north visitors stands used to be. The Zoellner Arts Center stands where the eastern end of the stadium was..which was the varsity baseball field until late '70's, then a parking lot for big supporters.
It was a great place to watch and play. Many people have told me that Taylors sod was the best playing surface on the east coast. The school took very good care of it. Playing on the same field as Jim Thorpe gives one a chill, regardless as to how many times the grass was cut and reseeded since 1912.

Yes the digital archives got it wrong. That's clearly March Field based on the stands and the rear of the current history house and former theta delta (?).

That Carlisle game was 100 years ago... funny story: we were undefeated heading into that game. That week, our legendary coach Bob Folwell decides to quit for reasons unclear in the historical record. We go 3-2 the rest of the way. We lost to Carlisle 19-0 but we almost gained an early advantage. I think we scored on the opening kick but it was called back. Thorpe was actually injured in the game and I think Carlisile lost the next one because of it, but it setup his legendary Harvard performance.

Several years ago someone found a ticket to that game in their wall. Wish I had that artifact!

They could set up right there on March Field, the exact spot "where Jim Thorpe once ran." How many schools today can duplicate that?

Of course, if they've already got a puppet show scheduled, well . . . .

In his track days Carlisle was booked to meet the Lafayette team at Easton. A welcoming committee was puzzled when only two Indians got off the train.

"Where's your team?" they asked.

"This is the team," replied Thorpe.

"Only two of you?"

"Only one," Jim said with a smile. "This fellow's the manager."

I read a book called Carlisle vs. Army. It features Jim Thorpe and the Indians, and how they helped america accept the native population at the time. Anyway a section of the book details Thorpe's track exploits against Lafayette.

Tickets sell out quickly, but there are ways of getting them. As a last resort, you just cruise the tailgates until you find someone who is too wasted to actually go into the game.

Since our former conference-mate, Rutgers, quit playing Princeton, this is as close as you can get to witnessing the very birth of college football itself. And it feels like it once you're there.

Um, I really only think it's two times. 2009 and 1968 wins by the Hawkineers were the two most "upset wins" based on record dispairity.

Disclaimer: my post is unreferenced and from the hip, but it's easy to check: open up excel, go to CFB warehouse, cut n paste the LC and LU records side by side, at the end column do a subtraction formula between the LC and LU win columns, rank the highest record disparities, and then manually check the years ranked at the top to see which team won.

1912 was Carlisle's great season that ended with the game at Army (I think Eisenhower broke his leg in that game versus Thorpe). Lehigh lost to Carlise 34-14, for only its second loss of the season, going 9-2. All-American Pat Pazzetti was the Lehigh QB and NY Times had a big write up on the confrontation. Following year, Carlise visited again, and leading 14-7 late in the game, Lehigh was inside the Carlisel 10, when Thorpe intercepted a pass and ran it back for clinching TD. Both games at Taylor. I remember running down that sideline back in 1970 just to say I 'followed the footsteps'. Hard to believe 41 years ago.

And the riots. Yes, they were grand spectacles and part of the tradition. We haven't seen a really good one since '93 when Bethlehem's finest pulled their paddy wagon out to the 50 yard line to make loading the miscreants easier. Prior to that, we had the two greatest riots ever - 1975, which I was lucky enough to witness, when the bands could not get on the field for halftime because of the fights and shenanigans, and the second half had to be stopped at least five times because the revelry spilled out of the stands; and 1959 (unfortunately, before even my time) which is the stuff of legends because the gates at the closed end of Taylor Stadium were opened to let the PA State Police motorcycle squadron in to attempt to quell the uprising. They failed. Of course, we remember the reaction in Easton when, for at least two consecutive games (probably 1976 and 1978 as reactions to the 1975 riot), they scheduled 10:00 AM starts to reduce the time for alcohol consumption. They were outwitted by the students who merely treated 10:00 AM Saturday as a late Friday game instead of early Saturday.

Of course, we remember the reaction in Easton when, for at least two consecutive games, they scheduled 10:00 AM starts to reduce the time for alcohol consumption. They were outwitted by the students who merely treated 10:00 AM Saturday as a late Friday game instead of early Saturday.

I don't remember a heck of a lot from either of those games. xlolx

Do you recall that prior to the coming of steel goalposts imbedded in concrete is was rare that a second half point after was kicked in any of these games because the goalposts were usually down by the 3rd quarter?

If I recall correctly, they used to remove the metal goalposts at Fisher and construct wooden goalposts just for the game.

Pard4Life
October 14th, 2011, 02:29 PM
The 2002 game was the last time the goalposts came down, and deservedly so. We at least have the intelligence to put in wood posts after that one; Lehigh doesn't. If we win this year (har har) they should come down.

Don't forget the recent phenomenon of Lehigh taunting and overall poor sportsmanship and respect of the rivalry by Cohen.

Yes, I remember that all too well. Had both my kids with me (ages 11 and 5 at the time) and as the confrontations spread up into the stands it got a little tenuous as to whether the 'general spectators' were going to be involved peripherally. This thread is really pulling back some memories. I remember the posts coming down at halftime in 1975 in Taylor when the game was already out of hand. Current AD Sterrett was the Lehigh QB that day.

The only time I have left "The Game" early--had to as I had my, then, 6 year old daughter with me and was truly concerned about her getting frostbite. I had her bundled so you could only see her eyes. She didn't want to leave! She was so upset (because the Lehigh football games were the epitome of our daddy/daughter outings) that I promised her that we'd go back to Taylor before they tore it down, and did so the following April to watch the Brown & White Spring Game, which was usually held, back then, in the old 'natural bowl' that became Goodman.
Curious about the the 2x4' markings as old Taylor only had concrete stands with no 'seats' on top of the concrete ledges..did you bring your own?? (;-)

All I can recall from that game is my toes - how freakin' cold my toes were. We went to a Ukrainian pub after the game on 4th Street somewhere with a Polka band and had a rippin' time. There were 10 or 12 of us, I think, and the owner kept bringing us "Horilka" - a traditional Ukrainian spirit of some sort - and several of us collapsed after many rounds of Zoom/Schwartz/Profigliano. You all recall that game, right?

The owner actually left the bottle on the table for us, one after another, even as he kept repeating that it was against the law to do so and that the police would take his license away.

It was medicinal you understand, given the cold and all.

You know you are right - now you mention that they were concrete. It came from the stadium that final game. I rememeber toting it up the hill to where I had parked and trying to figure out how to fit it in my 4 door 86 Escort. Any ideas Ngineer? Perhaps players bench? Was there some kind of banister maybe?? Please also see my post in the "Rhody" thread as I asked you to name a nearby pocket park that figured in my 1981 departure from the game.

I should have mentioned I was one of only about 2K to watch the end of the game - I think it started pretty full and emptied quick. Coldest of the 31 Lehigh games I went to - 1989 I think 2nd (prob tied with 1981!) with the snow squalls at halftime and into the third quarter of the inaugural "Game"at Goodman - warmest probably had to be in my experience the 2009 game and I recall there was a very mild 1982 game. I feel like an old timer!

I guess since The Game won't be much to talk about, Lehigh fans need to spend the week correcting your incorrect and unsupported facts. As a matter of fact, with Colgate (#9), Holy Cross (#12) and Bucknell (#14) it appears Lafayette is near the basement of the Patriot League. Maybe you were referring to the Top 10 Liberal Arts schools that have Maroon in their school colors.

Hands down Lehigh beats Lafayette on the field and in the corporate arena.

PFL must not have seen the recent rankings. In other years this survey ranked Lehigh and Lafayette nearly equal. There was a small difference in the mid-career salary and starting salary.

Lafayette is an undergraduate college. It doesn't grant graduate degrees with graduate degree incomes. These are the top ten undergraduate colleges, according to the same source:

Actually, Lafayette has two graduate schools. They're named, "Penn" and "Columbia." But data for Lafayette graduates who go on to earn higher degrees (i.e., physicians, lawyers, MBAs) are attributed to those institutions.

Some of the names on that list ought to look familiar to Patriot League nay-sayers.

Still though, it's as true now as it always has been - Friends don't let friends go to Lehigh. To the extent Lehigh graduates earn any income at all, it is solely as a result of liberal federal programs aimed at hiring those with profound intellectual challenges and emotional shortcomings.

We all know that great football programs can always count on the support of their fans regardless of the team's performance or even the weather conditions. Please note all of the Lafasux fans at (smells like) Fish-er Field during a recent 39-13 drubbing of the Lepers at the hands of Bucknell:

Still a rising star. With the surgery being done so soon, he should be rarin' to go come August. I'm sure he won't participate in Spring drills. Fitz's time to shine! A Senior going to get his first career start at a TB and in his last game against LC. Could be a great story.

I have some interesting information that I compiled in Excel on the Lafayette-Lehigh series. Traditionally either side has accepted that 'records don't matter in this rivalry.' However, this is not quite the truth. The team that is three games better than the other almost always wins the game, save for a few rare instances.

When Lafayette has a three game advantage, the Leopards are 27-5-0.
When Lehigh has a three game advantage, the Hawkineers are 25-1-0.

In this week's scenario, with Lafayette coming off of a loss and Lehigh a win, Lafayette is 8-19-1.

When Lehigh has entered the game with an eight game winning streak, they are 4-1.

The "biggest" showdown in Lafayette-Lehigh was 1981 and 2004, when both schools entered with a combined 16 wins. Lafayette won both games and entered each game with a one-game winning streak. Lehigh had won four and eight games respectively.

The next "biggest" showdown was 2005, when both teams combined for 15 wins entering the game. Lafayette also won.

If you have any other data questions, just ask...

Lehigh is a national university, but their graduate programs are rather limited and most grad students are part-time MBA or education students. Lehigh has very solid programs in these areas, but they aren't curing cancer on the Southside. This isn't Hopkins or UCLA. A kindergarten teacher is a worthy profession so I will not make fun of them, but only at Lehigh can a student earn a degree that qualifies them to do this job.

Merely saying that the other person does not have wit is the rhetorical equivalent of photoshopping pictures and... wait... never mind.

To enumerate my whereabouts for Lehigh games this year, you need only look at our 2011 schedule, as I have attended every game. But, hey, thanks for putting me in my place. Your perspicacity is most impressive for someone saddled with the comparative disadvantage of an Easton education.

No matter how much you try to downplay Lehigh, one thing is certain, it offers much more than Lafayette.

You can get a graduate degree and cert in education at Lehigh. Lafayette is a liberal arts college and by nature has a different mission. The mission is not necessarily better or worse, just different.

You say we don't have graduate programs and obviously that is true as the mission at Lafayette has always been undergraduate education. I in turn can point out that Lehigh has TA's who play a large role in many classes, while at Lafayette every class is taught by a professor with a terminal degree in his subject.

have more alumni who are also more successful

Not really... it's probably even. We have an alum that is the #2 at the most powerful and valuable company in the world to give you an example.

possess a much greater endowment

I would hope so... you are twice our size and are a research university... and even then we are about 70% of your endowment!

and have 4 more Patriot League titles than you.

We have three national championships and seven people in the College Football Hall of Fame, two and six more than you.

We also have more beat-looking girls from New Jersey.

Heath-- you are so off base it is barely worth a response. I guess this is what you get from a guy who spends all day telling customers he is sorry their hamburger is overcooked.

You don't even know what "liberal arts" means. Economics for example is considered a liberal arts major. Lafayette has just was many students majoring in engineering, chemistry, biology and the sciences as they do History and English. Just go away as you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Full Time 18%

I think there are only about 100 students in the full-time program too. Given Lehigh's presence in undergrad business, its MBA program is disappointing. It looks like Lehigh mainly partners with corporations, a reason for such a high part-time rate.

I think it is somewhat disappointing... I looked into the program and saw how small it was. Usually one the things to look for in an MBA program is the class size since you learn from your classmates' experience during discussions and projects. Lehigh should really ramp up the program; I bet it could become nationally renowned fairly quickly. Maybe not as profitable as a law school but it would add to the bottom line too.

If you want a ticket as a non-student, you'll have to buy one off of someone. Students and season ticket-holders guaranteed, then alumni waiting list. So you can shell out $49 for a 3 game mini-plan that will get you a ticket.

Here's a video of the student tailgate scene on Lafayette's campus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6J0LTx2_KH8

Lehigh's athletic campus is sprawling, with tailgating throughout grass fields and parking lots.

Weiss presented the case for schollies to the faculty and the athletic department. It was not an announcement per se, but more of a presentation of how schollies would work and be integrated into LC. This is a positive sign and we are moving in the direction of yes. Our BOT still needs to vote yes to give Weiss the power to vote in the PL meeting. Weiss could recommend a yes to the BOT, which rubber stamps whatever the President says. I think Weiss is leaning towards recommending a yes, but a formal announcement will not be made until the PL meeting and it will likely be in concert with the others. If we vote no, which I don't think we will, we will still implement.

Oh, please be careful. If you've read any of their posts after the last 3 losses, apparently some of the Lafayette faithful frown upon vulgarity. They believe the most played rivalry in the history of college football should involve no utterance more crass than "golly gee wilikers".

Additionally for all tailgaters, the only acceptable beverages to be consumed in the presence of a Lafayette fan are Milk or Grape Nehi's.

And one more FYI so as not to offend the visiting fans, "taunting" is also a no-no. I believe their fan base has settled on "Tebowing" as an alternative. Although I do side with them on this. If Lehigh had lost 11 of the last 16 games, I would be tired of seeing Lafayette players jumping around after ANOTHER win.

Great video at www.Lehighsports.com showing highlights of last year's game at Lafayette, with all of the great goal line stand led by MLB Groome and his great stick at the end, and interspersed with interviews of Coen and some of the players after the Georgetown game.

Forecast for Saturday is partly sunny with high temp of 55 F. Lookin' like a perfect day for football. Lum needs about 100 yards to break the season record, 1 % point increase to break the season completion percentage, 2 TD passes to break the season record. Spadola also needs about 110 yards to break his OC's own reception yardage record and 11 receptions to break Cecchini's record of 88 in 1993.

You can credit the stop to our coach. He ran the same play two games ago and everyone in the stadium knew it was coming. I remember yelling on first down that we all know what the play will be. In fact I will be shocked if we don't run the same series if we are inside the three-four. There were about ten Lehigh players in the box.
