View Full Version : Appalachian State @ The Citadel - Game Thread

asumike83
October 12th, 2011, 05:25 PM
It is mid-week and unless I missed it, there is not yet a thread for this game. I like ASU to bounce back after a bye week having already faced a more potent triple option to learn from. Having 3 defensive starters back in the line-up should further stabilize the defense. The QB situation is up in the air but it sounds like DP is a no go this week and Jamal Jackson will make his first start. He's had 2 weeks to run with the 1st team and I have confidence in his ability. I predict a tight first half with ASU pulling away late.

ASU: 31
The Citadel: 17

Attendance: 14,500
I expect a strong ASU contingent in the stands. I will be loud and proud, don't disappoint me!

I have even taken the initiative of writing a full preview for the ASU folks who'd care to read it:

It depends on which offense shows up for App State, if it's the one that i think they are capable of 38-14...if not 24-14

Right you are. I think the bye week was well timed and hopefully we come out sharp.

There will be some personnel changes on the defense from the Wofford game. Kimbrough will be back as well. Look for the ASU defense to defend the 3O much better this week. Citadel's oline isn't as good as Wofford's either.

Now the offense will remain a mystery until gametime as Jackson will likely be the starter. My biggest concern will be using the playbook vs. Jackson's ability to lead the team to victory. I hope to see Cadet in the slot more, Miller used more at RB, going to Jorden early and often, and getting Quick 7 to 8 targets. Use the talent we have PLEASE.

ASU historically plays close games in Charleston for some reason. Three of the last five games down there have been decided by three points or less, during that stretch ASU has won by an average of 21 at home.

Weather should be fine with a high of 80.

Here's hoping the App offense returns to "blitzkrieg speed" and wears down the Citdogs. Much quicker developing plays, quick passes and then Brian Quick passes downfield. If JJ starts they will blitz every play trying to disrupt and the Apps need to hit the openings created. Lets get back to "jet" speed and play with some confidence. Get Miller and Cadet in space. Maybe the coach's watched to Oregon game last Saturday and realize that's the speed this offense is meant to run.

I think the defense will dominate this weekend being back at full strengh. Citdog has NO passing attack and with a week to correct things from a better Wofford option team the Apps should be loaded for bullpups.

Interesting read for any of those who are Rivals members:
http://appalachianstate.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1278296

Looks like the staff has decided to move Lanston Tanyi back to the down lineman position full-time in place of FR James Robinson. The DL will now be Ronald Blair, Dan Wylie and Lanston Tanyi while Lloyd, Rizor and Brewer will make up the OLB rotation. Robinson is a young guy with a ton of potential but very little experience and it sounds like he will remain in the rotation and see his fair share of playing time behind Tanyi. Personally, I love the move. Lanston is our best pass-rusher and also has experience against the triple option offense. This makes our 3-man front much more disruptive and should allow the LB's to fly around and make plays. Tanyi came out and played with is hand down in the 2nd half of the Wofford game and looked great. Hopefully this will help sure up the front seven for the remainder of the year.

October 13th, 2011, 09:56 AM
Wonder if the Tanyi move may be just for TO teams, he did well in the 2nd half at Wofford, mostly up on the line even as a LB.

Hopefully having Tanyi/Gainey/Kimbrough back will help quite a bit. If we are going to win the D probably needs to hold them to only 1 TD.

Jackson is certainly a good athlete. I'm not sure he's got the best quarterbacking skills yet - thinking from a leadership, passing, seeing other players, etc. point of view. If The Citadel can force Jackson to be a quarterback and deny his individual athletic abilities, it may be a long day for the App offense. I'm counting on Jackson's having a great day, App's offense pulling it together following the open week, and App's defense shutting down the triple O.

Go App!

I agree, the defense was decent today.

The 14 points in the 1st half were from a fake punt and a double reverse pass that gave them a big gain.

The scores in the 2nd were a short field drive, a blocked punt TD after a three and out then another short field from a fumble. The Last drive was a bad defensive showing but they were so gassed. Not saying these are excuses, but the offense was just as much at fault for all those scores. JJ getting hurt was the biggest thing.

The first half App looked as crisp offensively as they've looked in a long time. Much better playcalling and quicker developing plays. Miller made a huge contribution and JJ looked very poised running the show. Crazy second half but good to see 550+ yard of balanced offense. Presley was absolutely awesome in the playoffs last year.

I'm probably in the minority... but, I don't believe our offense was so much better because JJ is that much better than DP. Jackson didn't have any pressure for the first half. He could just sit back and pick the secondary apart. DP did not have that luxury against Wofford, Chattanooga, or Virginia Tech. The playcalling was on a whole different level today... and JJ benefited from that. And, as good as a game as Jackson had... Presley has had several that are better.

I would go with Presley if he's 100% next week... but, I know I'm in the minority.

I was able to be there today, and I think this was the best we've looked all year. Jamal had a great game, we ran it well and the defense was not nearly as bad as the score would indicate. A fake punt, reverse WR pass, fumble and blocked punt made it close. Big mistakes, but fixable and not defensive problems.

I love DeAndre to death but Jamal needs to be in there. He was sharper and more confident than DP has looked this season. He finished 21 of 27 passing and I'd say maybe 2 of those incomplete passes were on him. He threw a great ball and was poised late when we let them back in it. In my opinion, Jamal is ready to lead this team.

He had one good game in the snow in the playoffs. That was running. It had nothing to do with having a complete game. He was not awesome against Villanova(heck, the whole team was pretty bad that day).
As you said, most would disagree with you on this one and I am one of them. I do respect your loyalty, but I do think it is time to keep the change in place.
