The Eagles, who received 25 of 28 first-place votes, were idle after beginning their season 2-0, as they defeated Tusculum and conference rival Samford. Georgia Southern returns to action Saturday night when the Eagles hosts Western Carolina.

Northern Iowa, which started the season 1-1, received the final three first-place votes. Following their bye week, the Panthers also hold onto their No. 2 ranking.

Appalachian State defeated Savannah State, 41-6, Saturday evening as the Mountaineers scored on five of their first seven possessions, giving them a 27-0 lead at the half. Mountaineer quarterback DeAndre Presley completed 11-of-17 passes without an interception, while the ASU defense only allowed Savannah State 41 just yards.

Montana State knocked off Minot State over the weekend, 43-7, keeping them at No. 4 this week. The Bobcats led Minot State 38-0 at halftime. Quarterback Denarius McGhee completed 13 of 20 passes.

Rounding out the top five is William and Mary which narrowly defeated New Haven, 13-10.

New to the Top 25 this week is North Dakota and Youngstown State. North Dakota narrowly fell to Fresno State 27-22 Saturday, while Youngstown State improved to 2-1 after knocking off Illinois State, 34-27.

Massachusetts had the biggest leap in the poll, jumping six spots to No. 19. The Minutemen improved to 2-0 after their come-from-behind win over Rhode Island.

Nine conferences are represented in the poll. The Colonial Athletic Association leads the way with six teams, followed by the Southern Conference and Missouri Valley Conference with four ranked teams. The Big Sky has three teams. The Southland and the Great West both have two ranked teams. The Ohio Valley, Patriot League and Big South all have one ranked team.

I know that I'm a homer on this one, but I have a hard time believing #'s 21-25 are better than INST. S.C. State lost to a bad Central Michigan and a bad IU, EWU is 0-3, and several others are 1-2. INST lost to a decent Penn State team, beat a fellow FCS team, and beat an FBS team and only getting 31 votes.

I love how it took them a week to realize Chattanooga beat Jacksonville state handily. Im guessing after the mocs maul App this weekend App will still be ranked ahead.

Couldn't agree more. I try to stay objective when it comes to polls, but what has a 1-2 UND squad shown that Indiana State didn't when they smoked WKU? C'mon man.

The question is, when Chattanooga beats both ASU and GSU, will they be ranked above them? Conversely, if they lose to both ASU and GSU, do they fall out of the top 25?

It's simple. NDSU is NOT that good. You played two horrible programs that my own high school could beat and they've only scored one TD in 4 games. You lack of strong OOC games hurts you every year come MVFC time. I have no personal hatred for NDSU, just for Lakes...and I even voted for them at 10-11.

September 19th, 2011, 11:53 AM
The two thing I note in the top 20 are NDSU dropping during a bye and W&M not taking a slight drop for needing a turnover advantage to win by a FG over a D-II.

Below 20 is always going to look a little strange. If every voter thought you were #26, you would end up #49...

The North Dakota/NDSU thing makes this really difficult to take seriously. NDSU should NOT drop six spots with a bye; and, while I can see North Dakota getting votes and possibly being ranked (I wouldn't, but can see how others might), jumping from unranked to #21 with the simultaneous six point slide by the Bison make me think there are some ballots that have confused the two.

No way we should get any votes until we start racking up wins. We play NAIA Black Hills State on Saturday so if we win do we crack the top 10?xlolx

(Note: Not arguing that Maine is absolutely a top 25 team, just saying they've done things like actually win this season, including on the road at Albany).

Seriously do these coaches realize there are 2 teams in North Dakota AND 2 teams in South Dakota?

I think they get them confused since both were in the Great West at different times.

North Dakota State Bison (NDSU)
University Of North Dakota Sioux (UND)
South Dakota State Jackrabbits (SDSU)
University Of South Dakota Coyotes (USD)

How can South Dakota State get more votes then Cal Poly after losing to Cal Poly 48-14?

How can NDSU can drop 6 spots by having a bye week?

How an UND can jump from unranked to #21 after losing to Fresno State and is now 1-2.

USD beat Eastern Washington (0-3) by 2 scores and are ranked lower than them and only 1 spot higher than UND?

Where were you when the coaches poll came out on that September day?
Were you at work on AGS.com
Posting that Mark is gay?
Did you stand there in shock at the sight of that poll
Showing that the Bison had dropped?
Did you shout out in anger, and wonder if Bill Fette is a voter
Or did you just sit down and laugh?

[Chorus:]
We're just voters in some coaches poll
Where we place teams doesn't matter one iota
We watch ESPN but we're not sure we can tell
you the difference in NDSU and North Dakota

Guys... you don't necessarily get credit for having an open date ("bye"). You don't just automatically reserve your spot. Sometimes, other teams jump ahead temporarily. Then, when they have their open date, you have the chance to jump ahead of them again (if your team wins). People think you're locked into a position in the poll but it doesn't work that way. It's not black and white, there are a ton of variables. Everyone will have an open date at some point, let's not freak out for no reason.
