Description:
The Larry R. Handfield Athletic Training Center will provide B-CU’s student-athletes with a cutting edge facility designed to enhance their performance on the playing field and their pride in being a Fighting Wildcat. Included in the new facility is space for a co-ed strength and conditioning center that will be available to all B-CU athletes. The strength and conditioning center will be located on the building’s first floor with easy access to new offices for athletic training staff, hydrotherapy, x-ray and treatment rooms. On the second floor, large and small team meeting rooms will be equipped with the latest in A/V and computer technology allowing the coaching staff to make presentations, review film and videotape, conduct team-building exercises, and develop playing strategies.
The building’s brick and glass façade will complement the Mary McLeod Bethune Performing Arts Center which is directly across the street. Visitors to the building will enter into a dramatic three-story glass-front atrium that will house the B-CU Athletics Hall of Fame.
The new Athletic Training Center is the cornerstone building of a multi-faceted effort to upgrade B-CU’s athletics facilities. Additional phases of the program will include construction of a new football practice field adjacent to the Larry R. Handfield Athletic Training Center, and the renovation and repurposing of existing athletic facilities.
In keeping with B-CU’s commitment to environmental stewardship, the Larry R. Handfield Athletic Training Center will be constructed using energy efficient materials and techniques. For example, there are no windows on the western face of the building – the side with the highest – and hottest – sun exposure. Windows facing south and east will have thermal “low-E” panes that reflect heat from the sun, keeping it cooler inside. In addition, the building will utilize a high-tech panel wall system with high R value insulation that helps keep heat outside in the summer and inside in the winter. Solar panels will heat hot water for showers in the locker rooms, and the building is designed to accommodate future installation of photovoltaic panels for solar-powered electricity.
The building is named in honor of Larry R. Handfield, current chairman of the B-CU Board of Trustees and the first B-CU alumnus to hold this position. He is a Miami-based attorney who is a longtime donor and supporter of B-CU and a past recipient of an honorary doctorate degree. The majority of funds for this facility were raised by B-CU alumni, who participated in a “chapter challenge” fundraising campaign organized by the University’s regional alumni chapters.
