When - Saturday, September 10th
Time - 6pm kickoff
Where - Homer Bryce Stadium, Nacogdoches, TX

Previous match ups - 2010: SFA 22-UNI 20, 2004: SFA 24-UNI 21, 2003: UNI 38-SFA 24, 2002: UNI 31-SFA 24

I wanted to take this off of the SLC week 2 picks and just have a thread opened for the back and forth on this game. I am looking forward to this game due to the quality of both teams playing.

Was McMurry that bad or was Harper running it up on Mumme? Maybe going for a 100? Just curious.

That won't happen...at least not the foot off the gas thing.

UNI pulls it's starters before half, or at the start of the second half, if the score is more than 35 points.... Heck, there have been times Farley has pulled starters early in the second quarter...unless he is trying to make a point.

I hope he tries to make a point next weekend.

UNI won't rout SFA. SFA actually doesn't suck on defense. They retained most of their players from last season. Biggest losses were Kenneth Charles and Jabara Williams (now a St Louis Ram)

Both? I mean, I hate running a score up a team, but Mumme is a jackass...

Coming from a guy who thinks his team is better than GA Southern? I'll ignore unless you can give some proof as to why besides the fact that we opened with a scrub we shouldn't have.

I'm not in any way doubting UNI. I think they are NC bound honestly. Great solid team. However, we don't really know how SFA because they used a DII transition school to get the kinks out of the offense. It's honestly still a mystery as to how good or bad they really are.

I'm going to be a homer and say UNI wins this game, but I don't think it'll be a double digit win. UNI's defense is going to get a real test in this one.

Temperature high in the mid-80's is in UNI's favor. Could be a lot worse weather situation.

I have to go with UNI (homer pick yes) but there is great team depth and speed on this team, and I expect the Panthers to dominate up front on both sides of the ball.

I hope the temps are mid 90's for this game. UNI deserves to have their brains boil for agreeing to let a Southland team have a home game early in the year.

Why give them such an obvious advantage? I wonder if UNI agreed to play with 10 players too.

The odd thing is that almost all of UNI's games at SLC teams have been in Sept.

Obviously MPLS doesn't include a Dome as an advantage. Plus it isn't an obvious advantage. Heck just last Thursday it was 96 here in Cedar Falls. Normally it is in the 90s round this time of year.

I would say that our Dome is just as much an advantage as it would be if it were 90 in Texas. Plus MPLS not all FCS schools get the luxury of playing St. Francis and Lafayette.

On to the game. I think it should be a great game. I am not sure we know what either team is quite yet. SFA scored 80 points on a D3 team while we lost by a point to a FBS bottom feeder. Can't wait!!

GO PANTHERS!!

So it's an obvious advantage for the South when the North plays down here in September BUT it's not an obvious advantage for the North when the South plays up there in late November or December. Humm..xconfusedx

They used a D2 school to get the kinks out on a D2 level. Now they get a good FCS team to get the rest of them out :)

UNI almost beat Iowa State. Too bad they didn't. Turnovers are going to be key in this one. If SFA loses the turnover battle, there's basically no hope.

Yes and yes.

Point is: northern teams can simply decide not to schedule southern teams away early in the year. There is no rule forcing it. On the other hand, southern teams can't refuse to play at northern schools in the playoffs. They have no choice

UNI's defense is built to stop the run. This short passing game is going to present challenges. Question is how mobile is Atteway (spelling)? Boothby will be coming. He was double/triple teamed pretty much the entire ISU game.

Also, has SFA published a 2 deep? The official SFA site is still linking to 2010 press material as of now.

Sorry I didn't see the "not" in the 2nd part. It's an obvious advantage to get northern teams in the heat in Sept and it's an obvious advantage to get southern teams in the cold in Nov/Dec.

Again though, my point was simply that no northern school EVER has to agree to play a southern school in the south in Sept. They can simply refuse to do it - and frankly they should be doing that. It's very, very stupid not to.

NDSU played at Nicholls in 2004 (W), at NW St in 2005 (W), at SFA in 2006 (W), at Geo Southern in 2006 (W), at Miss Valley St in 2007 (W, duh) and at Sam Houston in 2009 (L). I know the Nicholls game was boiling hot but I don't think any of the others were as they were night games, later in the year (MSVS) or they just lucked out with low temps (GSoU).

SFA was a pretty good team. Their defense was a little underrated. Kept our running backs in check most of the game. The key was UNI forced 4 turnovers and didn't give the ball away once.

Great win!

Go Panthers!

Win feels good after last week's loss to the Cyclones. Also nice to redeem after last year's cluster of a game at the Dome.

So much for that heat.

It's amazing....that punishing Texas heat hasn't affect UNI one ****ing bit...yet the ****ing players that live in the damn heat can't handle it.....Wow.

I've noticed the cramps have all come while SFA has been on defense and needed the clock stopped.

HAHAHA. DO you think the cramps were menstrual?

Good win for UNI. 3 picks. Fumbles will keep you from winning. Some calls I did not agree with, like the 15 yard helmet to helmet that didn't happen.

Watching the Stream it looked like the guys hand hit Rennie in the helmet. Which is not legal. There were a few other calls I thought we questionable, and for sure the turnovers will kill you. Same thing happened to us in the dome last year. Good game SFA and go win the Southland again!!

They're just not used to that Texas heat. Lol

what heat. It was in the 80's.

had the game been 2 weeks earlier, it would have been 108.

28 degrees is a huge difference.

SFA wouldn't have been able to put 11 guys in a standing position in that kind of heat.

It's been 80's or 90's all summer in the upper midwest.

I was sarcasm because the home team was having a lot of cramping issues....in the second week....at home.

Obviously it wouldn't matter if it wasn't hot. Looks like you guys got lucky with the heat - great win in any case.

Don't schedule a southern team early on again.

I'd rather we would schedule a good southern team early on and have a test than playing the likes of St. Francis. It shows me a little bit more of what to expect from my team, and when we get in the Valley we have been tested by good teams.

Not to mention it must have been pretty hot if the SFA players were cramping up right? They should be used to the Texas heat...

Nothing wrong with playing good teams in the non-conf season - nothing at all. What is wrong is to give the other team an advantage that they don't deserve. It won't be a fair test, in that case.

Well, I wanted to wait nearly 24 hrs to let everything sink in before posting my thoughts on the game, so here we go ...

It's weird, but what I took from the game is this: We are better than I thought we were. I felt coming in that UNI was going to be the better team and that we'd have to play very well to stay in the game with them; however, it turns out that we are actually more talented than they are. Unfortunately, our execution was terrible.

We have better players and outschemeed them, but everyone knows that you can't make the mistakes that we we made and expect to win a football game, especially against a quality team like UNI. It was actually very similar to the Villanova game where we had the opportunity to deliver an early killshot, and instead shot ourselves in the foot countless times. If we get up on those guys by 3 or 4 TDs at halftime (which we should have been) then Rennie has to throw the ball in the second half, but we did not and that allowed them to continue to run their offense, and eventually it started to take a toll.

UNI is a good team, but it is overly apparent that Rennie, as good as he is, is a terrible true quarterback (hell, he was 9/25). But man, he's one heckuva football player. I wasn't as impressed with their freshman running back as I expected to be, although he did run hard and didn't have Anderson as a compliment either. Defensively, they adjusted well, but benefitted from Attaway's inexperience.

That inexperience obviously will fade, but he's going to have to cut down on the mistakes in a hurry if we want to be as good as we can be this season. It still is his job to lose, and he hasn't lost it yet. I was glad to see him finally start throwing it to Cordell, but I don't think he ever targeted our outside WR on the far side a single time. He's going to have to spread it around a little more too.

Defensively, we are pretty good, but we were on the field way too long. We're pretty solid up the middle, and our corners are absolute studs. But you can't lose containment as often as they did on Rennie and you have to get off the field when you have as many 3rd-and-long opportunties as we had.

At the end of the day, I love our chances to win the SLC even more after last night than I did before kickoff. Those mistakes - especially the penalities - are typically the exception and not the rule when it comes to the 'Jacks. I really, really hope we see UNI again ... Congrats to the Panthers. They showed they were the more mature team and much more ready to win now. Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes and be ready to win again very soon.

I did not see the game but from the sounds of it, grabanaxe, SFA is not the better team. When four turnovers are forced against you, you are not the better team. Also, when your players go down "injured" in key times of the game to stop the clock, you are not the better team.

Quit trying to justify it and take off your purple colored glasses, you got beat by the better team.

Rennie was 9 of 25 with about 8 dropped passes....just like last week against ISU when he was 15-32 with 8-10 dropped passes.

Also, if you are saying you aren't impressed with using Rennie as a true drop back passer....I say to you no ****, really? Dude is the best athlete on any field he steps on in the FCS, and was during the Iowa State game.

Justify anything you want, anyway you want....you got beat soundly.

I can't wait for our game this year....We're not going to give you stupid penalties like we did the last two years....2009 was a gift, perfectly wrapped for you. Last year, you had ONE good drive, in the last two minutes of the game, when it counted. Congrats on that....but...had we not committed stupid Deadball fouls that extended several of your drives, you wouldn't have been in a positition to make the final drive..

Fortunately, it'll be later in the year, so your guys shouldn't have to fake injury this time.

By the way, how come y'all don't have cramps when you're winning?
