I don't know yet, but I will later today. I started thinking of it because SDSU and NDSU have played a whole lot of different DI-AA teams in their first couple of years.

Trivia Answer (teams that have played the most DI-AA teams while in DI-AA):

55 - Georgia Southern

45 - McNeese State
42 - Towson
42 - Lehigh
40 - Jackson State
40 - Nicholls State
40 - Western Illinois
40 - Montana
39 - Western Kentucky
39 - Eastern Kentucky
39 - Hofstra
39 - James Madison

Georgia Southern and Youngstown - that's pretty impressive. Of course, it's probably more to do with playoff success than scheduling, but still impressive.

Montana has the problem that there are so few I-AA schools out here we play the same teams year in and year out. Can't get the eastern schools to travel out here.

Did both teams need to be I-AA at the time of the game?
I casually looked at Hofstra and got 41, but I may have been off. What is your source?

EDIT: I just did a more formal analysis of Delaware and got 38.

While we're counting, how about a 'regular' season list too? I count 28 regular season opponents for Colgate.

C'mon, don't forget that Boston University and UConn were both members of the Yankee... so 14 at least. :p

Most definitely because of playoffs, but yes, still impressive.

Actually just had a thought... GSU was an independent, which would lend itself to playing a lot of different teams too.

I counted 36 for Furman, if Liberty was I-!! in '91 or '92 (if not then it would be 35)

Those of us old enough to remember Delaware's Independent pre Yankee conference days know that as an independent you get to see a lot of different teams. I remember seeing Akron, Eastern and Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Indiana State, VMI, YSU etc. all in the regular season along with Ivy teams Penn and Princeton and a home and home with Colgate. I think most of these schedules were in the D-2 early I-AA years.

I know that conferences make scheduling easier for AD's but it sure makes for a vanilla schedule.

That is impressive, considering that GSU is also one of the youngest programs having been restarted in the 1980s.

I only counted games that were played while both opponents were in DI-AA (counting recent transitional teams like Northern Colorado and UC Davis as DI-AA). I'm using the database the is used to create my websites so this is a good way to have people spot the problems in my data.

Here's what I have for Delaware (number in parentheses is the year I think they played last - edit, I'm not sure about that, let's just say that I think this is one of the years they played).

1 - Arkansas State (1986)

3 - Colgate (2003)
4 - Connecticut (1998)

As long as I'm at it, here's the top 10 in this category, not counting playoff games:

42 - Towson
39 - Youngstown State
38 - Liberty
38 - Hofstra
37 - Nicholls State
37 - Lehigh
36 - Morehead State
36 - Georgia Southern
35 - McNeese State
35 - James Madison

Kind of surprised to see Towson has played that many different teams considering I remember them playing NDSU in DII.

Here's what I have for Delaware
If you're going to count teams that have moved up to I-A, then I think you should count teams that have left I-AA for the other reason, ie. Boston University.

Amber,
I beleive I had Boston U and Morgan State for Delaware in addition to your list.

Boston was a former member of the Yankee/A10 conference we last played in 1997.

Morgan State was in 1984. I assumed they were I-AA back then, but maybe not.

AmsterBison
April 4th, 2006, 10:41 AM
Yep, you're right about Boston U - they were in DI-AA. I still have some holes in the data from discontinued programs.

Morgan State was in DII last time the Hens played them though.

If anybody knows where to find Texas Arlington's classification history, that would help plug another hole (I've updated them for their time in DI-AA but that's all I could find).

Edit: forgot to say "Thanks, HensRock!"

If you're updating, Lafayette College and UL-L are mixed up a lot. Look at Colgate for example.

There are quite a few of us who want a home-and-home with y'all. This would be "classics," if you'll excuse the word. Yeah, that would be good: "The Cross-Country Classic".

NDSU has a huge I-AA upside. I think very highly of their program and they should be able to hang with anyone. I predict they're in a title game within 10 years or less.

I have lots of respect for them too. Let's not forget, Paulson Stadium is not an easy place to win. They will not just roll into Statesboro and beat us up.

Aye. By 'list', I meant in the sense of the original question:

Which current DI-AA team has played the most DI-AA programs? (Only counting games in which both teams were in DI-AA)

With a game on Oct. 7th in Statesboro, Georgia Southern will be a new I-AA opponent for NDSU.

I'm looking forward to a good game, no matter the outcome!

I hear ya. This will be a good game. NDSU is a quality opponent and, by no means is it going to be an easy one for us. I look foward to seeing this game. I hope you'll be making the trip. If you can tune out trash-talking fans, Paulson Stadium is a great place to watch a football game, especially in October. It's usually sunny, temperatures in the mid-80's.
