(predicted ranking in league/number of teams) T stands for Tied

FCS rankings are sports network consolidated preseason rankings

Predicted rankings come from Phil Steele, they are probably crap but they are added anyways.

Winners (6): Illinois State, Southern Illinois, Northern Iowa, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Western Illinois (upset special)

Losers (3): Indiana State (closer than the experts think), Missouri State (by a lot), Youngstown State

If the Valley is as strong and as deep as I think it can be, then I think we win at least 5 or 6 games opening weekend. I'll say 6. It's going to be a strong year for the conference, just watch. xnodx xthumbsupx xsmileyclapx

Thursday Sep 1

7:00 PM ET #28 Western Illinois(6t/9) at #34t Sam Houston State(2/7)
-- Tough road game at SHSU, the outcome of this game should help us determine how the season goes for WIU
7:30 PM ET Illinois State (6t/9) at Eastern Illinois(6/8) -- One of those intra-state rivalry games that could turn into a grudge match.

Friday Sep 2

7:30 PM ET Youngstown State (3t/9) at No. 17 Michigan State BTN – No doubt here, MSU wins. YSU will probably play conpetative (within three scores) as long as they stay healthy.

Saturday Sep 3

12:00 PM ET #37t Indiana State (3t/9) at Penn State BTN -- No doubt here Penn St wins. If Blue wins the MVFC is in for a show or the Big 10 (12) is in BIG trouble.
2:00 PM ET South Dakota(4/5) at Air Force – No counter against the MVFC since USD is not officially in the conference, regardless Air force wins.
7:00 PM ET Missouri State(9/9) at No. 15 Arkansas -- No doubt here Arkansas wins. MSU is just not good enough and they don’t have the tools to get it done. MSU take the money and get out without getting injured. MSU has the undisputed toughest schedule to start the season.
7:00 PM ET #7 Northern Iowa(1/9) at Iowa State -- Last year ISU (FBS) shut out UNI, which defined UNI’s early season. This year revenge might be on UNI’s mind. ISU has lost a few players due injuries and academics, this could turn the game either way.
7:00 PM ET Lafayette(2t/7) at #12 North Dakota State(3t/9) -- No doubt here NDSU should win. Laffayette is good but just not good enough and they don’t have the tools to get it done.
7:00 PM ET #16 Southern Illinois(2/9) at #32 Southeast Missouri State(7/8) -- REVENGE!! Is the only thing on SIU’s mind for this game. With the transfers and a year under their belt SIU comes out hot.
7:00 PM ET #30 Southern Utah(1/5) at South Dakota State(8/9) -- This might be an interesting game and we should tell a lot about both teams after this game. Could be a toss-up, but go with the home team.

MVFC goes 5-4, 5-5 with USD

Just an FYI, the OVC has 9 teams in the league not 8! You may want to learn something about a conference before dragging it through the mud like you've done here. i'm not saying that EIU or SEMO will win; I'm saying it's hard to make accurate decisions when you don't know the teams involved.

Thursday Sep 1

7:00 PM ET #28 Western Illinois(6t/9) at #34t Sam Houston State(2/7)
- A bit of a homer pick, but I just feel that SHSU isn't quite where they want to be yet. I know that the Necks are breaking in a new QB and several new players at skill positions, but they do still have quite a bit of experience coming back in key positions. This will be a close one, but I think Western pulls away early in the 4th quarter.
7:30 PM ET Illinois State (6t/9) at Eastern Illinois(6/8)
- The Redbirds have no problem in this one and win going away by 20. They do give up 3-4 TD's to the Panthers though.

Friday Sep 2

7:30 PM ET Youngstown State (3t/9) at No. 17 Michigan State BTN
- Smash mouth football with Big Ten size/skill players beats smash mouth football with MVFC size/skill players. Spartans by 28.
Saturday Sep 3

12:00 PM ET #37t Indiana State (3t/9) at Penn State BTN
- Indiana State hangs around for a quarter. Penn State by 30.
2:00 PM ET South Dakota(4/5) at Air Force
- Air Force imposes their will on the Coyotes, wins by 20.
Missouri State(9/9) at No. 15 Arkansas
- Razorbacks win big, 30+
7:00 PM ET #7 Northern Iowa(1/9) at Iowa State
- close late, comes down to a missed UNI FG
7:00 PM ET Lafayette(2t/7) at #12 North Dakota State(3t/9)
- NDSU comes out and continues the momentum from last season's playoff run, win by 17.
7:00 PM ET #16 Southern Illinois(2/9) at #32 Southeast Missouri State(7/8)
- Salukis return to prominence begins with huge win on the road by 20.
7:00 PM ET #30 Southern Utah(1/5) at South Dakota State(8/9)
- Jacks pull this one out with 4th quarter push, win by 6.

Western Illinois at Sam Houston State - Not much more than a homer pick for the conference. Here's hoping for a better OOC performance out of the conference this year.
Illinois State at Eastern Illinois - I think the ISUr offense will showcase their explosiveness in this one.
Youngstown State at Michigan State - I doubt this one will be close.
Indiana State at Penn State - ISUb could've surprised a lesser FBS team this year but not Penn State.
South Dakota at Air Force - USD won't be blown out but I think their FBS win streak ends at 1.
Missouri State at Arkansas - Ugliest game of the week.
Northern Iowa at Iowa State - UNI won't sneak up on ISU... and I don't think it'll matter.
Lafayette at North Dakota State - The Pards are a tougher opener than most Bison fans are giving them credit for. I don't think this will be a blowout but the Bison will win.
Southern Illinois at Southeast Missouri State - Hoping for another good road win for the conference to start the year. A healthy SIU is a very good team.
Southern Utah at South Dakota State - SDSU seems to struggle OOC and SUU will be a tough test for an unproven team to open the season with.

7:30 PM ET Illinois State (6t/9) at Eastern Illinois(6/8) Redbirds get it done in this rivalry game.

Friday Sep 2

7:30 PM ET Youngstown State (3t/9) at No. 17 Michigan State BTN BIG wins over new team.

Saturday Sep 3

12:00 PM ET #37t Indiana State (3t/9) at Penn State BTN Closer than PSU wants. Not clear til 4th who wins.
2:00 PM ET South Dakota(4/5) at Air Force Falcons soar over Coyotes (Ki YOT ez). Hope Vermillionites play well, but this isn't 2010 Gophers.
7:00 PM ET Missouri State(9/9) at No. 15 Arkansas Hogs run wild over Bears. MoSt start to season isn't encouraging.
7:00 PM ET #7 Northern Iowa(1/9) at Iowa State Clowns beat Cats in dogfight.
7:00 PM ET Lafayette(2t/7) at #12 North Dakota State(3t/9) Good to have Patriot playing MVFC. Need more of these matches. NDSU demonstrates why FargoDome is such an incredible home field advantage.
7:00 PM ET #16 Southern Illinois(2/9) at #32 Southeast Missouri State(7/8) Salukis have this one circled after last year.
7:00 PM ET #30 Southern Utah(1/5) at South Dakota State(8/9) Jacks open up passing lanes and T OBrien addresses interception concerns. SUU makes this a battle in Brookings.

**Bolded for ??WTF??** I fail to see how "I" drug the OVC through the mud I just reposted PS's rankings and misinterpreted a t for 8th in the OVC for 8 teams..

Well i got that information out of phil steele at a very late hour in the AM.

I now see that Tennesseee st and APSU are tied for 8th in the league making it a 9 team league, my bad

Of this i am aware. But i figure following them this year in the weekly picking threads will help conference fans have a better understanding of USD when they are in the MVFC next year.

Not to mention everyone so far seems to understand they are not in the MVFC but will be next year.

I realize this is a MVFC-related thread, so the majority of posters more than likely have a vested interest in the MVFC, but I find it interesting that the overwhelming majority of you are picking SDSU (8th in the Valley) to beat Southern Utah (1st in the Great West). We either have a bunch of MVFC homers posting here (which may have a little to do with it), or the MVFC is perceived as a deep/tough conference with a lot of good football teams. Keep in mind, there is some good football played out in the Great West - many of which will be a part of the Big Sky next season - so I thought this was worth mentioning.

In my opion, stating that the preseason #8 from MVFC (at home) > #1 from Great West would not be true on most years. xchinscratchx That said, I do think SDSU will win this game.

SDSU is not an 8th place MV team. They are always tough at home and play good defense. No way SUU comes into CAS and beats the Jacks.

They may have finished there last year, but they are picked to be 4th this year. Not to mention they were technically tied for 3rd last year as pretty much everyone in the conference finished 4-4. Plus as wrong as it is I don't think too many people are sold on Southern Utah despite them being pretty good last year.

Despite being 1st in the Great West they only finished one game record wise ahead of SDSU last year, and SDSU arguably had a tougher schedule. These are some of the reasons people are picking SDSU it does not seem like it is just blind MVFC homerism.

SUU had a pretty tough schedule last year, losing to San Jose St, Wyoming, National Champions EWU by a TD, NAU and Texas St, then went 4-0 in the GWFC. SDSU did play Nebraska and Delaware. According to some posters on these messageboards, the MVFC was down last year.

I fully agree with RabidRabbit on these picksxsmileyclapx

Italicized = Game of interest to the MVFC
Bold your winner
(predicted ranking in league/number of teams) T stands for Tied

FCS rankings are sports network consolidated preseason rankings

Predicted rankings come from Phil Steele, they are probably crap but they are added anyways.

Winners:

Sam Houston - stupid move by WIU to schedule them early in the season when it's hot. Don't let them have that advantage - schedule them late in the year or wait until the playoffs when it's cool down there anyway. No northern school ever has to give a southern school that advantage.

Eastern Ill - Hopefully this will be a MVFC conference game one day.

Michigan St - no chance for YSU against a potential Rose Bowl team

Penn St - not a Rose Bowl team, but still no chance for ISU

Air Force - I actually give USD a good chance to win this game, based on the U of MN win last year and the fact that UM beat Air Force a couple years ago

Arkansas - MSU has no chance against an SEC team

Iowa St - UNI has 50-50 chance to win this game, that's as good as an FCS team can ever do against a BCS conf team

NDSU - no chance for a Lehigh-UNI repeat, NDSU will not lose a game to school that favors anti-competitive policies over being a top competitive team in the division (which they easily could be with the correct policies)

SEMO - they turned things around last year and I don't see why SIU has improved from last year

SUU - upset of the week, I think SUU is going to have the best year in their history and show they belong in the Big Sky
