View Full Version : Coolest Mascot, FCS and FBS

Burn the Horse

One thing I really like about FCS ball are the mascots. there are some great mascots at this level that you don't find at the FBS level.

so I was wondering, other than YOUR team's mascot...which one do you think is the coolest out there? remember you can vote twice, once for FCS and once for FBS.

off season discussions get slow from time to time.

Holy crap...I had no idea that the mascot at Dartmouth is the Keg. Sadly, it is not but it seriously would be the greatest mascot ever. The Big Green fall into my argument below.

I absolutely love the Florida State Seminole...so that is my FBS choice.

FCS...so hard, so many really solid choices. I will not choose any team whose mascot is a mascot of other schools, e.g. Bulldogs. BTW Gardner-Webb...yeah, you, I am talking to you the Runnin' Bulldogs. WTF...stop trying to be ironic. You chumpstains couldn't come up with something better like "Scowlin' Bulldogs", since you know...Bulldogs scowl but they most certainly do not run. ****ing wanna be hipsters.

I can't choose my Great Danes, but it is cool to be the only school at any level with that name...plus add in the Scooby Doo references.

I can't choose Monty...though he is the funniest antagonist I know other than Citdog when he hasn't had his schmeckle touched prior to responding to a Knob's posting. The Montana fans wouldn't live it down...and there would be 16 immediate threads started of Monte and Wash-Grizz before I could take my morning ****.

The Chanticleer, while cool in theory (a fighting rooster, or cock), just sounds gay...and is too close to South Carolina's Gamecock...so it lacks originality for me.

I can't choose an "inanimate f$#king object"--please watch In Bruges for a great Ralph Fiennes argument of such-- like the Big Red, Big Green or the Crimson.

No mascots with current disputes, see Fighting Sioux.

So...I give you the: Campbell Fighting Camels. 1) No one has that name at any level. 2) What's better than a camel; frickin' thing spits at you when it's pissed...and doesn't need water breaks at practice...hence, they are not pu$$ies. Speaking of pu$$y, they always have the option to adopt the old Camel cigarette big twig and berry facial logo setup...

Rhode Island Institute of Design's unofficial "club" nickname for hockey:

The "Nads" is the name of the team, and their mascot is "Scrotie".

http://www.footballbabble.com/images/scrotie.jpg

From this article: http://www.footballbabble.com/football/college/mascots/

Scrotie – Rhode Island School of Design Mascot

Scrotie - Rhode Island School of Design MascotWithout a doubt, one of the strangest college sports mascots has to be Scrotie, the unofficial mascot of the Rhode Island School of Design.

The costume is unique and at the same time horrific, looking exactly like a giant penis wearing a red cape with the scrotum hanging beneath.

The school’s basketball team is known as the Balls, and their slogan is, “When the heat is on, the Balls stick together.” The hockey team is called the Nads, and their cheer is “Go Nads!” The cheerleaders for the Nads are commonly known as the “Jockstraps” (since they support the Nads). The yearly hockey game with rival college Cooper Union is known as the “Supportive Cup.”

Scrotie was created to cheer on the Nads in 2001. Despite his status as an unofficial mascot, he’s present at all the games and widely accepted by the student body. Of course, no self-respecting administration could actually approve such silliness.

This is the same school that Seth MacFarlane went to, so I am not at all surprised at what goes on there.

They aren't so different than Native Americans at least sterotypically:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_American#Discrimination

Irish Catholics were popular targets for stereotyping in the 19th century. According to historian George Potter, the media often stereotyped the Irish in America as being boss-controlled, violent (both among themselves and with those of other ethnic groups), voting illegally, prone to alcoholism, and dependent on street gangs that were often violent or criminal

The stereotyope of the Irish as violent drunks has lasted well beyond its high point in the mid-19th century

Notre Dame Fighting Irish
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y178/darell1976/irish.png

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_stereotypes

Portrayals of Native characters as primitive, criminal, violent, rapists, deceptive, lower intellect, or as passive and full of childlike obedience, extended to TV, movies, novels, radio talk shows and comics

Native Americans were also portrayed as all-bring fierce warrior braves, often appearing in school sports teams' names until such team names fell into disfavor in the later 20th Century. Many school team names have been revised to reflect current sensibilities, though professional teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves, the Cleveland Indians, and the Washington Redskins continue. Some controversial upper-level Native American team mascots such as Chief Noc-A-Homa and Chief Illiniwek have been discontinued; others like Chief Wahoo and Chief Osceola and Renegade remain.

Keggy The Keg's Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Keggy-the-Keg/109178272434870)

Keggy the Keg is the unofficial mascot of Dartmouth College, an Ivy League university in Hanover, New Hampshire, United States. Keggy is an anthropomorphic beer keg, invented in 2003 by members of the college humor magazine the Dartmouth Jack-O-Lantern, to fill the mascot void that followed the abolition of the Indian mascot in 1971. Due to its nature, the mascot was controversial on Dartmouth's campus, and it was reported on in a variety of national media. With time, however, it has become an "ingrained part of Dartmouth culture".

Unofficial, of course, but has been accepted by the student body.

Leo and Una are actually brother and sister. They are like huge house cats. Sometimes they are playful and entertaining but like all felines, most of the time they just take it easy. However, one day one of my sons was playing around with his little cousin outside the habitat. Una saw them and began to walk in a circular motion in a low crouch, eying them the whole time. It looked just like something from Animal Planet! I told the kids they had better be glad she was in there and not outside. Even if she just wanted to play, well you know.....

It is a shame there aren't many left. Personally, I agree that the Orangemen, Redskins, Redmen etc. should be removed but, I think the non-disparaging mascots are fine. Seminoles, Braves, Vikings. Irish, Sioux. Illini

I think the ACC is pretty original for the most part with the Tar Heels, Demon Deacons, Wolfpack, Terrapins and Blue Devils. Arkansas D2 teams have unusual mascots like the Boll Weevils, Muleriders (was the Muleskinners), Wonderboys, the Bison and (The Helen) Reddies .

While I think Richmond has one of the cooler names, with Spiders, we have tended to have pretty crappy mascots. I am not yet sold on our newest one, though I think it is much better than some of our recent ones...

Probably not. I think they did it before the country went to he11 in a handbasket. By the way, I still pull for the Stanford Indians of Jim Plunkett days. The stanford cardinal? xthumbsdownx

Agreed. Hey Citdog, do you guys still play Dixie or have you guys given in to the PC police as well?

Campbell County (Gillette) WY is the "Fighting Camels." I know its not college, but thought it was funny they have the same name.

I found a list of the 20 WORST college mascots... the author picked Colgate 20th, and he/she went to Colgate!

I disagree with the Cobber being on here though... that is awesome...

I do agree with her that Salukis are pretty terrible and really ugly.

However, I disagree with some of these. They are pretty sweet. I am a pretty big fan of John Harvard. Also I like the Peacock from Upper Iowa. And Lil Red from Nebraska has to be the best. It is a dude in a huge inflatable suit...need I say more!!

Gee wonder why that is? There used to be plenty of them, but not all of us have wallets to open up to keep the mascot.. SEMO was the Indians for the longest time, but changed in 2005. I'm still upset that the Chief Illiniwek was done away with at Illinois. He was much more PC than FSU, but it didn't matter..

Do you really consider this tradition to be politically correct? This is an Illinois college student engaging in the antithesis of traditional Native dance. Rhythmic (Olympic floor) gymnastics with thick makeup. Traditions are tough to let go of but just because it's a tradition doesn't make it positive.

It's hard to see how the other side views this issue. Ever lived on/near or visited a reservation? Seen a traditional pow-wow and watched real Native Americans represent their own culture? I've lived across the west/upper midwest and have never seen a representation like this considered to be an "honor". This would have led to a brawl in the towns I've lived in.

My understanding is the state of Illinois has no official native presence. There are Natives living in the state but their collective population was generally forced out to the reservations in Oklahoma. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Apache, Dine', Hopi, Gila River and Tohono o'Odham friends in Arizona have summed it up succinctly by saying: "I am not a mascot. I am not a cartoon character. Don't tell me how I should feel or that I shouldn't be offended."

That being said, if a tribe votes in support of the mascot staying then that is their prerogative.

My xtwocentsx. This isn't meant as an attack on you either. I find this issue interesting and like hearing people's views. Anyone who's offended...well...fire away.

As someone who has some Indian heritage, I think those Indians are just cutting off their noses to spite their faces. The Indian mascots and team names have helped keep their memory alive. They should try to make money from it and I don't mean by going to court and getting free money. These hundreds of thousands of fans would be prime customers for Indian-related articles crafted by tribe members. Fans are ALWAYS buying souvenirs pertaining to their team. Be American! Make some money off it.

You're kidding. You mean the absolute least original, most boring/common mascot of all time? I'll give you the live eagle flying in thing. That's pretty cool. But just "the Eagles" is about as lame as it gets.

Careful, the last time I said that I got blasted for being unpatriotic!

That said, I dig Furman's. The jousting thing with the opposing team's mascot is damn cool.

Thanks, kperk014. I'll bring this approach up next time I'm chatting with my Native American friends about sports/mascot issues. You're absolutely right about the desire for one's team souvenirs comment.

I won't go with the "homer"/alumni vote. I will go with my favorite mascot being Big Red @ Western Kentucky University. Can't believe the McDonalds Corporation never sued the bejebus out of em for "Grimace" copyright infringement but I just think Big Red is bad ***.

I've always looked at it as an honor to have teams at all levels with names like Indians, Braves etc. I'm 51 years old and I cannot recall ever seeing an Indian mascot shown in a humiliating way. Far too many people these days seem to sit around just waiting to have a chance to be offended. Just look out there and see that a university like Florida State chose the Seminoles as a symbol of their school pride and take pride in that. I have no idea how many thousands of fans buy tomahawks and the like to celebrate their allegiance to their teams each year. But I would be willing to bet they would much prefer to pay for things made by Seminoles, Cherokees, Choctaws etc than something made in China.

They changed the name because they wanted a more identifiable mascot and everyone always asked "What is a Pacer?"

Now they ask "What is a Skyhawk?"
