Smash mouth isn't really a base formation, it's more of a mindset and style. You can play the triple option and be finesse or smash mouth, but your formation is still triple option. Same with the Delaware Wing T or the Notre Dame Box.

Oh hell! Not the Notre Dame box! I remember as a high school student, we went to the playoffs one year and lost, the next we got a new coach, who was gonna resurrect our Championship tradition with the Notre Dame Box. He held all sorts of talks, newspaper stories, the whole nine yards. We won something like 3 games the next 2 years, passing about 3 times a game. Oh the box! What memories...

SDSU's pro-style offense is about as boring as it gets... Our base D is 4-3.

I guess the best way to describe LU is multiple sets on offense (with elements of gun spread and pistol among them) and 3-4 on defense

My best guess with Elon would be Spread/4-3.

JMU Defense: we have been running a 4-2-5, but I think I heard we're switching to a 4-3. I could be wrong, and i'm not sure why we would switch since we're good on defense most years. the 3rd safety acts like a kind of LB.

offense: last year it was a pistol, but i don't think you'll see that again. it should be SOME form of spread, probably more running than passing. if Cosh starts, it will be at least slightly more balanced than in recent years.

Short answer: i'd go with "Spread" and "4-2-5".

Holy Cross

Offense: The spread

Defense: Technically it is a 3-4, but we often have an OLB act as a stand-up defensive end (think LT).
