Lawmaker involvement is a strategy even some University of North Dakota boosters question, and is unique among schools forced to decide whether to drop American Indian nicknames deemed hostile and abusive or accept penalties for keeping them.

North Dakota lawmakers say hundreds of constituent emails substantiate tremendous public support for the current nickname. Some legislators have said they resent the nickname being characterized as hostile and abusive because they believe the name and logo are treated with respect. Others have said the change is being rammed down their throats by the NCAA and think the higher education board should have done more to adhere to residents' wishes.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - North Dakota political leaders are asking the NCAA to back off and let the state's flagship university keep its Fighting Sioux name and logo, even at the risk of potential blacklisting and scorn by other universities and its own conference.

Now that's offensive.

I personally think if one Sioux Tribe is OK with it - Then that should be sufficient

I'm a fan of keeping the current mascot. That said, why not just change the mascot to the "Spittin' Sqwals"?? Yeah, that'll show 'em. :)

For UND to do that, it would have to create a mascot. It has a logo, not a mascot.

Time to bring back "Thunder the Bleacher Creature" out of retirement!!! (UND's mascot of the early 1990's. It was a big giant gorilla...it lasted one season and I don't have to tell you why.)

UND should change it's name to the Seminoles. The Seminole tribes in Florida and Oklahoma gave their a approval to Florida St. I mean, why wouldn't they give the $ame approval to UND, it$ not like F$U did anything $pecial to get their endor$ement?

Personally I liked it when the unofficial mascot was Kermit the Frog with the the chant Kermit's luck guides our puck (or something close to it). It only last one year as well as UND did not have the official okay to use the image from Jim Henson.

FYI: Kermit was originally a Native American caricature similar to Chief Wahoo.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thunderstruck_(song)

In the 1990s, song was played at the beginning of sporting events for the University of North Dakota during the introduction of their mascot, Thunder the Bleacher Creature. It was also the inspiration for the character which, at the time, replaced the traditional Sioux mascot. (1990 Thunder was introduced).

http://gfsports.areavoices.com/2009/05/15/hoping-for-a-bleacher-creature-return/

For those of you who weren’t blessed enough to remember the Bleacher Creature mascot of the 1990s, think a cross between the Phillie Phanatic and Mr. Met. That probably doesn’t even do it justice. It truly was a ‘Creature’.

But it was Thunder the Bleacher Creature who stole the sideline show at the 95th UND-NDSU football game Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
Thunder was a hit from the moment he broke loose from a cage at midfield just before the game began.

I wonder if NDSU started using Thunderstruck for their football opener when our Thunder was retired.xchinscratchx

UND makes the LA Times!!!

The minute the change is made, North Dakota will begin plastering a new logo on shirts, hats and anything else you can think of with a 500 percent mark-up. The state mammal of North Dakota is the Nokota Horse. If the school decides to put a noble or even militant horse head on its sports uniforms and bookstore apparel, how many of the thousands of enrolled students and alumni will flock to buy some updated gear? The answer is simple...plenty.

Possible new nickname?? UND Fighting Nokota's.

Keep the nickname and be banned from hosting NCAA tournys and Big Sky membership. Seems like an easy choice. $$$$$$

Today (August 4th) is the anniversary of Custer's first encounter with the Sioux Indians. His next encounter 3 years later didn't turn out as well for Custer and his men.

Why not the North Dakota Custers or Calvary?

We are the university of north dakota, home of the roughriders. If not for gfrr, would there even be an argument here? Hence why its the obvious choice?

You could use W&M's second choice from a few years ago... the Asparagus.
