View Full Version : Rebirth of the FCS Stadium Thread

Hey all, it has been a few years since the last stadium thread on AGS has had any activity (v.2.0 of the thread, I think the original was done in 2003 or 04), and I thought it would be interesting to start a new thread of FCS stadiums, since I think so much changes have occurred in the FCS stadium landscape in the past 3-4 years. Mods, you can delete this if you think this is a duplication of posts, but I think it would be better to start a new one of these rather than trying to keep bumping a 4 year old stadium thread. I am really interested in seeing all the changes that have occurred to so many FCS stadiums, plus new stadiums we have not seen. So I'll get it started off, if that's OK.

Starting off with my alma mater, NDSU, and The Fargodome:

Here are 2 pictures of Bridgeforth (JMU): Image of what it will look like in August; and a shot of what it looks like now.

Right now the upper deck steel is done and they're working on the press box (covered by a tarp). You can see the suite level between the upper and lower decks. They just finished the footers for the 100 level (which will go in front of the "lower" deck ... they had to wait until the upper deck steel was complete to remove the crane to start the 100 level. You can also see the front wall in the endzone for where the lower level will wrap around. The 100 level, upper deck seating, wrap around of the endzone, finishing the interior and putting the scoreboard in place will all be done by August. In the drawing of what it will look like they don't include the scoreboard. Based on the steel frame that is currently up (and in the pictures from the link below) and reports, the videoboard will be quite large.

I'm having trouble uploading more photos, but they're pretty accessible. Here are a bunch of shots taken by someone on the CAAZone ... the last 20 or so are from April 1.

I hear the same, but won't believe it until it happens. I know that it is being planned (floorplans and all have been drawn up), but there are other things that we are waiting on. If it does happen, I think the ground breaking is scheduled for late fall. Why? I have no idea. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Think the idea of starting in the the fall, as opposed to next spring, is to show this recruiting class something is being done. Also hearing there is a new seating deck in the works.

As I understand it, its not that they haven't been doing anything, quite the contrary, they are ardent, active GSU supporters. The president just wants each of them to give 100,000 to remain on the committee.

Is that "give" or "guarantee" - as in "If you don't give it, get it"?

I was in a meeting this week about the Capital Campaign. The Campaign doesn't technically start 'til July 2012, but Dr Keel wanted Athletics "out in front" ahead of time. The 50,000sf facility will be awesome and you're on the money about why construction will (hopefully) begin in October. You're also correct about the next phase at Paulson. There are projects in the works for constructing/enhancing facilities for non-Big 3 sports as well.

It was give 100K. The president didn't think it was that bad since it would work out to 12,500 a year for 8 years. Apparently there was a flurry of very upset emails circulating amongst board members early this week.

HOMER BRYCE STADIUM

Home of the Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks

Opened in 1973 and seats 15,000 (24,000 plus including the grassy area) in the piney woods of East Texas.

http://www2.sfasu.edu/campus/virtualtours/images/homer_bryce.jpg

Recent renovations (2003) to the area include a sports medicine and academic center, new press box, suites, a score board as well as new additions to the field house that houses the new athletic training program and the installation of a new artificial turf surface (Momentum 51).

The scoreboard (not shown) is a Daktronics ProStar Video Board and ProAd Panel. The total size of the new scoreboard is 47 feet high by 52 feet wide and contains a 13-foot-by-18-foot video screen. It also houses a top-of-the-line sound system.

33,000+...either in 1996 vs Morgan State or 1997 vs. Southern...both games were homecoming.

Big Dawg

But FAMU only has 11,000+ students, so even if ALL of them showed up those games wouldn't have been 'nearly full'. It just sounds sketchy that they'd count them for one game and not any others. Why not scan the rattler card at every game? Who wants to advertise their home attendance as smaller than it really is?

FAMU fans have been complaining about undercounts for a while now.

Here's a little trick you may not be aware of; press the "Print Screen" key on your keyboard. This copies you desktop image to the computer's clipboard. Then open an image editing program, choose FILE > NEW and set the resolution to something better than 200. Go to EDIT> PASTE and you've got the image that was blocked. You'll need to crop all the extra garbage out, but it works.

Separate thread made for "top notch" stadium debate. This thread is a picture thread. Limited discussion about stadiums is okay but if it goes off on a tangent that takes up pages, it'll be given its own thread. There are no set guidelines on what will constitute the creation of a separate thread so we'll go by instinct.

Bridgeforth Stadium webcam shot from today from across the field. The camera is too zoomed in to see the endzone wrap-around on the right or the scoreboard installation in the left endzone, but gives a good feel for how monstrous this thing is. The 100 section is also being installed now (in front of the concrete wall and extending to almost on top of the field), as well as the touch-ups on the upper deck (which will be all purple as you can see from the completed parts on the top right. The center structure on the upper deck is going to be a press box.

And for those looking for a "scale" to measure the true height of this thing, you can just see the goal posts in the bottom right corner. Also, this webcame sits atop the student/visitor side, which, if you had been to JMU prior to the expansion, was at the apex of both sides. I'd estimate that the concrete wall in front is at least 15-20 feet tall. The upper deck with be somewhere around 13 stories tall and will eclipse the height of any football stadium in Va (yes, including Lane and Scott Stadiums)

Grizzly Stadium is the best in FCS. App State is #2. Georgia Southern is probably 4 or 5 on the list. FAMU stadium is terrible.

FAMU's Bragg Stadium currently lacks a few amenities that some of the newer stadiums has, but with a seating capacity of 25,500, new video scoreboard, great scenery, and close-up field action, it is FAR from terrible! We are even one of the very few FCS programs to have hosted ESPN Gameday so our barn can't be that bad. There are plans to give it a major renovation to bring seating capacity to 40,000, enclose both endzones, build a new field house, add club seating & lounge, luxury boxes, and more!

THIS STADIUM LOOKS AMAZING ESPECIALLY BEING THAT IT IS AN FCS VENUE! Contrary to what others might say, the purple looks great and really gives it a pop! I read that the stadium when finished will have a capacity of 25k. I know my home stadium Bragg holds 25k but it looks NOTHING like this - are the stands identical on both sides or is the capacity actually higher?

They're just doing one double-decked side, and they are building 40 or so rows of endzone seating that extends out from that grandstand very soon. The work they're doing by the beginning of FB season will have basically 60 percent of a finished football stadium. JMU I guess is waiting to see how they'll do with what they have before the build an identical double-deck grandstand on the other side. I guess for the near future the other side of seating will still be one of the old grandstands. The place will look lopsided for at least a few years, according to JMU folks.

IMO it will look a lot like Army's Michie Stadium or Maryland's Byrd Stadium when finished.

To answer a few questions...
1- the $62 million expansion will be finished by August and it includes permanent endzone seating that matches the height of the suite level
2- the opposite side will remain for student seating and it runs the entire length of the field but only rises about 3/4 as high as the suite level
3- JMU has a plan to build a symetrical stadium, but it will require a) raising more money b) having enough demand to sell out the current stadium
4- The stadium will seat more than 25K this year, but it was a marketing ploy to get people rallied around the expansion. Based on the architectual numbers and overflow seating, the stadium will probably hold 27,000-28,000.
5- the seating was designed with ample space so while the structure is large (130 ft high) there are fewer seats than there could be

here are some more pics

"The HOLE" finally gets it's Fieldhouse!

136 new club seats, combined with the 390 seats in the Press Box and the 17410 seats in the stadium brings us up to 17,936 officially with about 3,100 seats on the endzone burms. We can fit about 21,000 now. Safely...

The field house project will be finished in mid July after 10 years of planning and a year or more of construction.

A complete renovation and remodeling of the existing structure included an addition to the ground floor that nearly double the size of the structure. The creation of a second floor which houses a new indoor club room as well as outdoor seating
The new field house project completly remodeling of the existing 17,790 square feet and added 15,270 square feet to the single story building, making it 33,066 square feet. The expanded ground floor will boasts a brand new weight room facility as well as football locker rooms, meeting and film rooms.

The 2nd floor holds a club room where 150 fans can watch the game in the comfort of a climate controlled environment or 136 of them can step outside onto the brand new seating area. The 2nd floor also is home to several new offices for coaches and administrators.

Key features of the new field house include:
expanded weight room
team meeting rooms
enlarged locker room, coaching, staff offices
media room
additional conference rooms
enlarged ticket office
Hall of Fame in public lobby
Indoor club room
Outdoor seating area

I had heard it is just work on a retaining pond. My understanding is the university captures and stores water for irrigation purposes, to save on their city water bill. They're expanding the holding area.

I didn't take the pictures so i'm not sure but it does appear to be exaggerated a bit. Goodman was built a lot like GSU's Paulson stadium, in a pre-existing bowl. The one complaint people have is the seats being a bit removed from the field because of the contour of the bowl. It's still better than having a track.

The contour of the bowl is very similar to the Yale Bowl and Paulson Stadium.

Goodman could be expanded to 30-35k with little trouble. With the GA bank and SRO spots along the concourse the stadium holds 23-25k.

Not true - capacity is not changing. Just a reshuffle of how the temporary stands put in for the season are arranged. All 1,600 were under the scoreboard last year. This year 1200 will be on the opposite side with 400 under the scoreboard.

I will never understand why richmond built that stadium as small as they did...

Short version of a long story is that the only way to get football on campus was to build the stadium that size. Having football on campus was the #1 priority so the school made concessions with the city and surrounding neighborhood on size to get approval to be able to build it.

Technically new but not adding to capacity. Our students felt like they were give the worst seats in the house and the AD responded, hopefully now they have less of an excuse to not show. I'm a bit concerned with how the 400 seat bleacher is going to look under the scoreboard, I have a feeling its just going to look out of place.

Actually over on the southern side of campus by either the former football practice fields, or by the intramural fields, there is plenty of room for a nice track/field/soccer stadium. You can see the area with the fields on the bottom left of this shot.

Well the university had a very difficult time convincing both their neighbors and the city to allow them to build the 8700 seat stadium that was finally completed. THe School decided to build what they would be allowed to, and maybe be able to expand later once the neighbors saw that having the stadium on campus would not be a major nuisance. I would expect that maybe more endzone bleachers might arrive in a couple of years, and then in the long term plan, a new stadium for soccer and track/field might be in the plan for the southside of campus. But I would not expect anything in the next 5 years at the minimum. Also realize that UR only has 2800 undergrads, so the need for a larger stadium has to be demonstrated.

Where are the "former" football practice fields? I assume they work out in the new stadium now, with field turf and all. I took my official visit to UR in 1990, and now dont remember where the practice fields were. I do remember the football locker rooms where in the Robbins Center...did they have to run all the way to the bottom left of the pic everyday for practice??

Finished Bobcat Stadium in Bozeman. Very nice upgrade from 12000 to 18000. Sad they could only fill 11000 of them for their playoff win Saturday

Those are cool. Every time the Chronicle does it at our games I have to go look around.

It is pretty cool, though I gotta ask, why am I the only one standing in my particular section? Is everyone else just uninspired, or am I being a jerk to the people behind me?

What are you doing to those poor football players who have half of their body gone? A couple of players just have legs, another is split at the abdomen, others just the head. Montana should be reported for football player abuse.:D
