I guess if the Mayans are wrong, we'll get to see his first game as a head coach. Congrats on at least not hiring someone with a 57% Losing record like the start-up in Atlanta.

Wow. I wonder how many threads you guys can bring us up in? Not too sure what you're obsession with us is all about, but it can't be healthy.

I just see Ga St as a comparison for what they're doing in Charlotte. Pretty much any time Charlotte is mentioned, it reminds me of Ga St - same kind of setting and school.

I think so far we have followed ODU's example closer than G. State. Suburban Mecklenburg County is very different than downtown Atlanta. As for program setup, we are clearly following the ODU example closer than G. State or UTSA. The coaching hire is comfirmation of that.

I agree they look more like ODU. Honestly, that's probably a good thing. ODU is looking like they will immediately impact the CAA. I hope we grow as much as they did in their second year as I'm sure a lot of eyes will be on UTSA to see what they can accomplish.

Doesn't sound well in Charlotte. 90% of the comments are negative...

wooo freaking hooo

Can't wait to hear Dubois put a damper on enthusiasm tomorrow. He will annc we look forward to a bowl game in 2089.

MIC KEY MOUSE

A bowl game in 2089 seems like a much better timeline than the silliness I've seen from UNCC to this point. I'll be impressed if UNCC is D1A by that point.

So you had Mike Minter (SPLASH), even Chuck Amato (Recruiter, Semi-splash) and then you take a WF Def. Coord. who's defense was ranked almost dead last in the country - Ranked 110th.....wow! Just wow!

comments are never positive on the CO website. Lambert has grown on me since hearing about him last week. His back ground and prior experience leads me to believe he is the type of guy we needed. I think everyone would have loved to have a sexier name, but I think Lambert is a fit for what we have to do.

I'm anxious to see him and how he portrays himself publicly later today.

From the Charlotte Observer:
He will make a base salary of $175,000. The 49ers appear to be following the pattern of Old Dominion, which began football in 2009 and hired Bobby Wilder, a longtime assistant at Football Championship Subdivision program Maine who had no previous head-coaching experience.

The Observer has since updated that. At the end of the press conference Chancellor Dubois updated that. His base salary is $250k. In addition to Coach Mullen we'll hire two more coaches this year (assume a DC and position coach/recruiting coordinator) and a Director of Football Operations. Rest of the staff will be fleshed out in 2012.

I have a friend at Wake, the rumor is that Jeff Mullen, WVU OC that was let go may be the OC for UNCC. He was the Wake QB coach prior to WVU.

$250K for a few years with no W/L record for the first two and then at least two years playing mostly D2 and non-scholarship programs sounds like a good deal.

I imagine the incentive are tied more to donations/season tickets than wins/loses.

It's a good hire. Elon wanted this guy from what I understand.... but that fell through.

And why would Wake play App? Seriously? Same reason on why when App moves up that I doubt they'll play gotcha games against FCS teams for a long time.... it's a no win. Sure, Caldwell played you guys, and some of those terrible Wake teams were pretty well beaten soundly. But, playing Elon or Liberty or Presby for a small payday while giving the fans an instant win and getting a bowl win is nothing but a win-win situation for Wake. FCS doesn't help their SoS, so why jeopardize it with something that could be an embarrassment. If you guys step up and play GSU, Furman, Elon, Richmond or any descent FCS team that could jeopardize your local recruiting isn't smart.

Tell the whole truth here, though. He's not being recruited by Alabama and Oregon. He's been offered by Tulane, Syracuse, WKU, UAB, South Alabama, LT and Southern Miss... hardly the "who's who" of recruiters.

What's your point? Rivals also has FSU, VT, GT, UCLA and Clemson listed. He's rated 3 -stars by Rivals and ESPN. I think you and all the other AGS members would agree that anytime you can sway an FBS talent to come to the FCS it's a good thing.

I know you guys in Concord, NC are still getting used to football, but you'll learn. On the Rivals page, the schools that are listed are the schools that the recruit says he's talked to. Unless there is a check under the column "Offer" the names of the school mean squat. Most of his offers are from FCS schools.

We're going to see a lot of this, I'm sure, though. UNCC offers a lot of these kids immediate playing time with little-to-no competition. So, yeah, recruiting should be a little easier for the first few years.

Yes it may not mean anything at this moment but the real recruiting doesn't begin until a player gives his verbal. This kid the sort of player an FBS school would come in at the last minute once they realize their targets are going somewhere else.

He is a 3-star recruit with a ton of offers, including Appalachian. I'd love to have this kid in Boone, especially considering our OL struggles. Unfortunately, from what I've heard on our Rivals site, he is leaning heavily towards Army. I doubt that you guys (or us) have a very good shot at landing him but for a start-up FCS program to even get a visit from someone with a handful of FBS offers is impressive.

He was the assistant DOFO for Wake. Plus he has the highest qualification he needs in a situation like this, he's the HC's nephew! He just has to keep the books, equipment, clothing, travel and hotel rooms straight; and he'll be sharing most of those responsibilities with either the AD admin staff or the rest of the coaching staff. He'll be OK.

There arent a ton of schools who can make the white helmet look naturally good if it isnt already their base helmet. I know I wasnt a fan of Liberty going with the white helmet this year myself. I hope we go back to navy blue next year.

Agreed, the white helmets only work well with very plain uniforms i.e. Stanford & Penn St.

Hope this is just a recruiting deal and they never take the field with these.

Looks to me like someone took a random white mini-helmet and stuck some 49er stickers on it. The official mini-helmets they are selling look just like WH49er's avatar. Coach Lambert said he was looking into white helmets but I doubt that goes very far. I could see the white helmet with the plain C-pick and a green stripe down the middle, but not with the full logo and Judy has already said she wants the full C-pick and "49ers" on it.

bjtheflamesfan
December 14th, 2011, 10:05 AM
the white helmet would be nice for maybe a special game like Veteran's Day Weekend or something but as I said, there are very few schools (FCS or FBS) that could make a white helmet work if it wasnt already their primary helmet color.

On a somewhat unrelated note, I ran into a friend of mine at the gym yesterday that I played in a basketball league with and in the process of catching up, he mentioned that he was training to get ready for UNCC football try-outs. He is a good bit younger than me but not freshman age (about 20 I believe) that would probably have a couple years of eligibility. He played HS football here in Charlotte and said he was interested in playing slot receiver or strong safety. I know from playing basketball with him that he is plenty quick and looks like he's added some muscle weight in his training.

May or may not end up working out for him but I thought it was cool to see some of the local guys taking an interest in the new program, so I figured I'd pass that along for the 49er crowd.
