James Smith stepped down after the 2003-2004 basketball season as NW State and Mike Vining retired from coaching for ULM after this past season's slate.

May 11, 2005

PLANO, Texas - Ron Randleman, James Smith and Mike Vining, the league's winningest head coaches in their respective sports, have been chosen to represent the 2005 class of entrants into the Southland Conference Hall of Honor. Induction ceremonies are scheduled for June 2 in Galveston, Texas, at the San Luis Resort Spa & Conference Center at 7:15 p.m. The trio will join 21 others inducted since the Hall of Honor was established in 1999.

"It is quite an honor for the Southland Conference to induct such an illustrious group of coaches," Southland Commissioner Tom Burnett said. "There are not too many opportunities for sports organizations such as ours to honor three great coaches, the three winningest coaches in their respective sports, all in the same evening. This will be a proud moment for the league, and we congratulate Ron, Mike and James for their tremendous contributions to the history of the Southland Conference and their deserving Hall of Honor inductions."

In 23 seasons as head football coach at Sam Houston State University, Randleman won 132 games, lost 124, and tied three. Ninety-nine of those victories came after SHSU joined the Southland Conference in 1987, making Randleman the winningest coach in Southland football history.

Wow, 23 years at SHSU.......
Sorry, I never got to meet Coach Randleman - might have yelled at him a few times when Sam Houston played at 'The Hole'. ;)
