NATCHITOCHES -- There's hardly a better time to build a win streak than going into Homecoming, and when the Northwestern State football team runs Saturday night through the purple smoke for the first time in 28 days at Turpin Stadium, the Demons will fly through on the momentum of road victories at No. 22 Central Arkansas and former No. 15 Texas State as they welcome Sam Houston State for a key Southland Conference matchup.

If NW doesn't have more student support than they had against McNeese, now that they have knocked off UCA and TX St, Sam won't have to deal too much with the home field atmosphere. Turpin can be a snakepit to play in when the place is reasonably full and the fans are into the game. I was told the fans were not coming because the Demons were losing. Now they have something going, will the fans show up?

Teams don't have to worry about harassment by the student section as much anymore since the Demons switched the sides of the home and visiting team benches.

It is Homecoming weekend - that's usually incentive enough for some students to show up to a game, even if just until the King and Queen are crowned!

Article on the Demons...

Considering where the Demons were last year, these are pretty heady times for Northwestern State’s football squad right now.

The Demons have gone on the road the past two weekends and beaten teams picked well ahead of them in the preseason polls, while moving into a tie for second in the Southland Conference race at 2-1. Last Saturday, NSU held Texas State without a touchdown – something that hadn’t happened since 2001 -- and to 57 rush yards in a 16-3 victory.

That made it three wins in the last five games … which is three more wins than NSU had all of last season.

Projected to win by a Louisiana college football writer! He also picks UCA over SLU and McNeese over Nicholls...

Sam Houston State at Northwestern State (no line), 6 p.m. – Optimism is high around the Demon program with two straight road league wins and now a high-profile home game. Is NSU really on a roll or are the odds just catching up? A win Saturday cements them among the SLC elite, but Sam Houston’s been playing well and also can’t afford a loss. Sam Houston State 34-24.

Have no other choice, but to bounce back...

“We got together on Monday to talk with the team and I told them that we have to bounce back,” Bearkats head coach Willie Fritz said. “We have to put that game behind us and I don’t want to hear any talk about last week.

“All I want to hear about is beating Northwestern State and how we are going to do it. We had a great practice on Tuesday, one of the best we have had all season. We were good on Wednesday and Thursday, and we need good mental preparation over the next couple of days leading up to the ballgame.”

The Kats should take this. The Demons didn't look all that great is San Marcos last weekend. Texas State is just that bad. SLU on the other hand, I thought did look pretty good and I thought they would give the Kats more fits. That said, it seems Fritz has figured it out pretty quickly and that is no good for the Demons.

SHSU goes 3 and out...

NSU drives up field in first possession and Demons give up ball on turnover of downs barely into SHSU territory, I believe... just woke up, bare with me until I gain myself! ;)

Again SHSU goes 3 and out... SHSU punt buried at the NW1. Not shabby.

Apparently there's a forest fire going on south of Natchitoches and it's stinking it up there in Demon Country...

There's a forest fire south of Natchitoches towards Alexandria or something like that per SHSU radio. The smell has carried into Natchitoches...

SHSU 3-0 NWST, 15:00 2Q

SHSU is getting pressure on the Demons' Paul Harris...

Demons' 50+ yard field goal attempt... direct snap to the punter, lands on SH02. Strange, but smart.

TexasTerror
October 30th, 2010, 06:44 PM
SHSU offense continues to go nowhere...

55-60 yard punt for SHSU puts the Demons back in their own territory... let's see if Harris can amount to much. The SHSU defense is not having the same success as the Demons, but ultimately - no one is really going anywhere fast.

TexasTerror
October 30th, 2010, 06:47 PM
NWST punt. SHSU at their own 25 to start next drive.

Special teams may end up dictating this and SHSU has had the advantage there between good punting and the FG. One big return or a blocked kick could completely swing the momentum here with offenses stuck in reverse.

Two pass interference calls keep NWST drive going...

One big play to Palmer and the Demons are definitely within range of scoring... at the SH26.

Harris completes to Palmer, gets to SH23.

Harris to Brown - touchdown.

Demons continue to get plenty of help from the Bearkats or is it the officials? Hard to tell. Bearkats haunted by penalties! There's been plenty, including one on a guy not even in the vicinity - which would have been his third pass interference call.

SHSU gets a first down thanks to a Demons' penalty... pass interference.

Flanders has about 20 or so yards on seven carries. Just rough to win with that...

SHSU loses yards on first down... SHSU gets eight yards... 3rd and 7... Bell throws, complete. Short of first down. Yard shy around SH49.

Nine minutes left...

Will we go for it? One yard short. Bell under center. Try to draw them offsides. Take delay of game. Probably want more room to bury this punt.

TexasTerror

1-10 (SH28)... Bell play-action, pass dropped. 5:49 left in game.

2-10 (SH28)... Lovely, talking about the 12 OT game, ugh! Let's not talk about that. Wilson goes a yard on the ground. Worst ranked running defense continues to give SHSU running game trouble. Of course, SHSU without top two RBs.

3-9 (SH29)... Bell back to pass, over the top... overthrows Matthews. Penalty flag. ROUGHING THE PASSER! How about that?!? First down! 5:03 left. Peveto is being quiet. He knew it. First time he's been quiet all game!

Ummm... it's NWST's fault if the stats are getting uploaded slow. May be having issues on their end. NeuLion is not responsible for school issues. SHSU is sharing from NWST.

Tough loss, congrats Demons. Hope you guys win out, so you can get into the playoffs .

Curious what the deal is with the SHSU running back situation - not having Flanders and Morrow for the whole game (Flanders was in boot earlier this week), hurt the Kats... NWST coming in had an awful run defense and was hoping SHSU could exploit that.

plus, I just think the whol layout of it sucks. This is the first time I have ever seen a football game on it but I know I didn't like baseball games live stats with them. School issues not withstanding( assuming it is the school, because to use what you said, how do you know that it isn't a NeaLion problem?) the whole layout of it is just not impressive at all. JMO.

NeuLion is like DOS. They are rapidly improving to catch up with Windows 7 when it comes to live stats, but have a long way to go. I do like how SideArm has gotten better very rapidly. Their live stats are somewhere in between NeuLion and CBS-CS.

I do like the look of NeuLion and NeuLion is the vast superior product when it comes to multimedia purposes (sans live stats). Sidearm is actually the cheapest of the majors - NeuLion is behind CBS-College Sports...

Great win Demons! Don't think they get by SFA though to make the playoffs.

I really was not impressed with the Demons tonight. Their offense did not really do much against SHSU and their defense was nothing spectacular. They are going to have score more points to beat the Demons and they'll definitely need to stop the pass against SFA.

SHSU did not pass the ball and was using their 3rd/4th running backs. We just do not have the depth at the skill positions to be relying on 3rd and 4th players. Fritz is just in year one. I guess the folks in NWST know a thing about that as BDP grows the program...

I said the same thing somewhere else. I wasn't impressed with the Demons against Texas State. We just played like complete crap that game.

Yep - Demons also have to play at SFA. That's just not going to go their way. I bet after today's letdown in Nacogdoches, that things like that do not happen again.

SHSU played like crap, but again... the #3 and #4 running backs against the worse defense run-wise in the league. Flanders got seven carries early and was done. He was in a boot earlier this week. D.J. Morrow did not even play... not sure what the deal is, but with NWST not having to worry about our run, they kept our pass game off-kilter.

Just do not think we have the depth at this point to go to #3 and #4 guys at skill positions, ya know? This is just year one of Willie Fritz tenure and the cupboard was pretty bare..

SFA will be the only SLC team in the playoffs and even then I don't think they will go far either. Weak year for the SLC.

Part of that falls on scheduling, which only gets worse next year with each of the Louisiana teams - outside of maybe McNeese, can't remember - playing two guarantee games against FBS. Good thing is we have eight games in the league barring any changes to TXST - I really think you guys will play SLC football in '11 - which may help get two teams in. Okay... maybe not.

And by the way... on the Demons bandwagon through the end of the season.

BDP needs to detach himself from the officials and I'm sure he'll say some things that bring chuckles to all of our faces, but would love more than anything if we got two teams in. SFA is going to be a playoff team if they win out until a loss to the Demons.

Demons control their fate. Hope they win out. GEAUX DEMONS! (even if one of your fans gave me an F-bomb on Fork'em Demons)

My take on the game can be summed up in 3 words....

WE WERE LUCKYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!

You cant get inside the 20 4-5 TIMES and come away with NOTHING....Credit to SHSU's Heart on Defense but HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO GET A YARD xbangxxbangxxbangxxbangx

I do see two issues with Sam Houston....1) They didn't really test us deep (Trust me...we were beaten deep a few times)....Everything was mostly dink-and-dunk...

2) They bring in 1 QB for the run/option plays and another for the passing downs....They got kinda predictable with the O...

By the way....I don't think Sam Houston's kicker can ever hit the TOP of the upright and make the FG like that ever again to save life....He should play the lotto xlolx

Unfortunately just about every year in recent times has been a weak year for the SLC. In any case, if a team that went into yesterday 0-3 in conference play can come from 24-0 down to a team that came in 3-0 in conference play to win the game I think pretty much anything can happen.

Say what you want about Northwestern State but the Demons are 3-1 in conference play and SFA is a rivalry game for them. And SFA has two other conference games to play as well. I don't think there's any team in the Southland this year that can't get beaten by any other team in the league on a given day. In fact I think Texas State beating SFA kind of illustrates that. No team including SFA has really dominated. Three of SFA's four conference games have been decided by 5 points or less. It's not like they've been steamrolling through the conference so that it'd be a shock to see them lose another game.

FYI - we only have one QB. The other QB came in when the other went down with an injury and needed to be treated. Are you referring to having a player back there for the 'Bearkat' (not the Wildcat ;))?

I'm glad to see SHSU was so much better than the DEMONS in September, what a solid month Demons of kicking the great Southland azz. Maybe y'all ain't all that Texas Terrorist.xnodx

Catmendue, I know you have problems following your program due to the lack of information available on the Grambling web site (if it's not football - probably explains a few things, but that's neither here or there), but perhaps if you visit GoBearkats.com, you'll come to the realization that SHSU looked like crap in September (just like the Demons, if not worse!)

SHSU was 1-2 in the month and we were not sure they'd win a game in the SLC at that point!

By the way....I don't think Sam Houston's kicker can ever hit the TOP of the upright and make the FG like that ever again to save life....He should play the lotto xlolx

Really, you should see Texas States placekicker. Missed a 24 yarder in the SFA game, and he has had big misses all year as well. In fact if he had nailed a 30 yarder against Nicholls during regulation there would have been no ned for 4OT's and another TxState loss. Plus this is the guy that missed two extra points (how the hell do you miss an extra point?) against SLU last year that also led to an OT loss. I thought it was interesting that for the last two Texas State TD's against SFA, there was suddenly a new kicker going for the extra points.

And even the new guy missed one...

Dear Texas Twister,

To all of your post before, during, and after your teams loss...............this quotes for you:

Dear Texas Twister,

Jeff - you take in too much of that smoke from the forest fire?

Glad to see BDP living up to the hype for once and I hope you guys win out to advance to the playoffs. No Missoula trip for the SLC this year most likely, that'll be nice!

Exactly....I used QB because thats where he was lined up in that formation....I will admit though....I've never seen a variation of the flexbone from the shotgun formation...

Hmmmmm.......Why does this sound familiar???

Oh yeah...2009

Our Kicker: Shaughnessy, John

7-16 field goals
17-20 extra points

So far this season he's 5-8 field goals and 16-17 on extra points which at the moment would be an improvement.....

As for your situation with your kicker(s) I feel your pain....
