Henry Frazier III has done a great job at PV - guess this is protection for the program if he were to leave for another job - but does anyone feel that it's a sure thing that he's leaving? If anything, probably helps in keeping Northern in the fold, since he's such a great coach...

PRAIRIE VIEW — Prairie View A&M announced Wednesday that associated head coach and defensive coordinator Heishma Northern has been named head coach in-waiting.

Should current coach Henry Frazier III leave the program within the next three years, Northern would automatically take over as head coach.

Northern, an alumnus of Southern University, is in his sixth season as defensive coordinator. He was a finalist for Southern’s vacant head coaching job during the offseason, but his alma mater decided to go with former Washington Redskins assistant Stump Mitchell.

I really don't care for this 'coach-in-waiting' in FCS or FBS. If you're lining up a new coach, you might as well give them the job now - especially in FCS ball. On the other hand, if the guy is that good, he should re-think locking in with PVAMU...other offers are probably going to be available to him. So many things wrong with this approach IMO.

It seems like the PV powers that be saw the writing on the wall when Northern applied for the Southern job. Offering the 'Coach in Waiting' position gives them a greater chance he will stick around in his assistant job even if they know that Frazier may have no intentions of leaving during the upcoming three years. It sounds like a pretty inexpensive way to keep around someone they see has some talent.
