What's your favorite FCS stadium?

With all of the stadium expansions and renovations going on around the league, I was wondering whose everyone thought was the nicest, and why?

For me (and yes, it is a bit of a homer pick, but justified) it has to be Delaware stadium. Two huge equally sized East and West stands give it nice symmetry, and the single decker layout gives both stands a monolithic feel that makes the stadium seem even bigger from field level. The stands are made of good old fashioned concrete, so it's great for amplifying and reflecting sound, and the restrooms are the epitome of efficiency with the wonderful running walls.

The others I've visited have been Richmond's old stadium (which I also liked), Hofstra's (which to me seemed like a glorified high school stadium), William and Mary's (which I seem to remember was OK, but there was a lot of tailgating before that game, so my memory is a bit fuzzy), UMass's McGuirk field (which is pretty cool), and of course, 'Nooga, which was probably the most polished, but seemed to lack a certain soul.

What are your favorites, and why?

However, you ask a different question, then, as far as "nicest" and, to me, that is Princeton's stadium. Great layout, sight lines, convenience of concessions/rest rooms. Just an excellent, first class facility.

As for other stadiums, I haven't watched a game there, but I was over by the Richmond campus the other day and I really like the Spiders' new stadium. They did a great job blending it with the rest of campus.

I'm biased of course, but Strawberry Stadium is my favorite place to watch a college football game...not the biggest by a long shot, but with the slope of the stands, you're right on top of the action, and makes for a great atmosphere, especially when it's full...the setting is nice, with surrounding pines and oaks, which makes for a cozy, intimate feel...the addition of the new press box/suites/parking facility and concession concourse on the home side, has really dressed the old lady up quite nicely.

I am very partial to our own "Hole" when it is rocking but the setting for "The Rock" in Boone is pretty special. Add a little Sean Connery and the "Welcome to the Rock" clip and things can get fun real quick. xnodx

Wash-Griz is one of the great ones and the setting is also very scenic. You can feel the noise coming out of the north endzone.

Never been to Weber St. but I hear the scenery is great.

SUU's stadium is small, quaint and I have enjoyed my visits there.

Paulson in Statesboro can be pretty intimidating (when the Eagles are having a good year) with those 6 flags flying and the real eagle flying into the field.

I'll give my homer vote for Paulson Stadium. Great tailgating right in front of the stadium, 6 National Championship flags, loud and proud fans, a real Bald Eagle flying down from the press box, a capacity crowd of around 18,000 at every game, and a distinct home field advantage. Could you really ask for more?

Assuming the question doesn't include your own place, I'd have to agree with 'ngineer. If you see a game at Princeton, you'll realize nothing else in FCS even comes close. My only gripe with Princeton is that it can seem a bit gray and uncolorful, but they could easily add a few graphics or pennants here and there if they felt the need (which they clearly don't).

I really enjoy the Yale Bowl. Just so historic, and not a bad sightlight in the place. When it is close to full (Harvard Games) it is just a great place to see a game.

In the SoCon, The Rock and Paulson Stadium are by far the best atmosphere for football. Both have nice facilities too. The natural setting in Boone is awesome. UTC has a nice stadium but the overall atmosphere has been the worst in the SoCon until this year. That should continue to improve.

Montana Griz stadium is pretty incredible on all counts and the fans at JMU are nice and rowdy.

Stambaugh at YSU is awesome.
Chattanooga has a great facility in Finley.

That I've been to:
Wash-Griz. The stadium is beautiful and the backdrop is pretty untouchable.

(Fav FBS is BYU. Very cool atmosphere if you can handle not drinking (which I know most of you can'txlolx))

Ugh I hate the fact that App St. has a track around it. It makes you feel like you are sitting far away from the field. Actually that goes for most football fields with tracks.

As for WCU the new logo helps but the end zones are an eyesore because they are just straight purple.

Since I can't vote for Andy Kerr, where I have spent some of the best days of my life with family and friends, here's my try at objective stadia rating.

1) Princeton Stadium

2) Paulson Stadium

3A) Delaware Stadium

3B) Goodman Stadium

4) Fisher Field

Though a smaller facility, the new ballpark at Marist is also very nice with great sightlines, as is Wagner's park, which gives some wonderful views of NYC on a fall day.

Living in the Northeast gives one a chance to experience some of the top FCS venues in the country. Most of them lie in the IL but you still must include Delaware, Goodman and Fisher.

The best places comes down to the Yale Bowl, Delaware Stadium and Franklin Field for me. Delaware ultimately has the best atmosphere but not the best stadium. The best stadium honor goes to Penn and Franklin Field imo.

They actually lower the field and fill in additional stands on every side to adjust for the lower field level. Obviously it is a big project, but I think it is something to be considered before ASU gets new turf.

Lehigh's home filed was very, very nice. Needs an update scoreboard, but IMO it looked and felt exactly what FCS football should be.

Yale Bowl is great, but it just doesn't get the crowd it needs.

I'm partial to Harvard Stadium. The seats are right on top of the field (at least on the sidelines), and it's a 5-minute walk from Harvard Square. The only drawback is the end zone horseshoe seats are a bit far away, but they're only filled for the Yale game.

In all seriousness. I always liked Herndon Stadium. Too bad Morris Brown tried to go 1AA and went defunct. I was in favor of GSU taking it over when we first announced our team. But I think the "suburbian" alumni were too afraid to park there, though it is only 1/4 mile from the Georgia Dome.

I don't even like the Georgia Dome for Atlanta Falcon games and I'm a season ticket holder. Football, especially in the South, should be played outdoors. Everything feels artificial about the Dome experience.

You're right, there is something bad about being able to buy a beer, sit down on an individual seat, watching replays on 2 big jumbotrons at 72 degrees. I'd rather sit on metal bleachers, sip on coca-cola, squint to see the mini Coke scoreboard with the LED dots indicating down and distance, and the when I have to go the bathroom I get to pee in a trough with 100 of my closest friends.

If I am a recruit, and I have a choice to play where the Falcons play, or I can play in just a larger version of my H.S. stadium, I know where I would want to play. But we will see about that over the years. The Dome also gives us better opportunities for multimedia, which equals more ways to manage sponsorships. For example look at our gameday promotions

Not going to happen. The turf at The Rock is due to be replaced in a year or 2. No way we move the track before then. I'm not convinced they ever will. For those that criticize the track (which I understand), the issue at ASU is that flat undeveloped land is pretty much non-existant. Also, our track and field teams are traditionally very strong and deserve a lot of support.

I have seen several of the schools in the OVC. I've been to Jacksonville State, Murray, Austin Peay, and Eastern Illinois. Obviously I've also been to Southeast Missouri quite a bit. I'm not sure of a "favorite" but a little run-down on the stadiums I've been to.

--One-sided stadium that holds like 15,000
--Turf is absolutely awful (was in 2008 at least)
--Visiting locker room near nonexistent

Very true, the only spot you could possibly move the track to would be State Farm, which is an off campus location, other than that there is no flat area available in Boone. Space on and around campus is a pretty precious resource. They wouldn't even let the almighty Wal-Mart build a new supercenter, they had to build onto the current store a little in each direction.

I like Franklin field, though I have never seen a game there. I've always thought Temple should find a way to schedule their home games there around Penn instead of using the Linc.

Thanks for all the neat stadium shots so far, there are some cool fields I'd love to visit. If I wasn't stuck down at the southern tip of Florida (not to mention working every saturday) I'd love to take some road trips and see some games. YSU's huge single side looks especially cool, but I wonder if one would get vertigo sitting way at the top.

I have to say that Franklin Field is a pretty awesome place to watch a game. Definitely a classic stadium. Doesn't have the bells and whistles of some of the newer stadiums, but really gives a collegiate feel.

I've been to Finley and Delaware as well and was definitely impressed. Villanova Stadium isn't much to write home about although the outer facade looks kind of unique. That's probably the only thing that is remotely nice about our stadium.

Ironic that its the Georgia Dome that actually holds high school games. To my knowledge, Paulson, Wa Griz, KBS, UD et al don't have high school games being played on them.

I think a recruit would rather play in front of a sold out 18-20K seat rocking stadium, than a 1/8 full, enthusiasm-draining acoustic vacuum.

Ironic that its the Georgia Dome that actually holds high school games. To my knowledge, Paulson, Wa Griz, KBS, UD et al don't have high school games being played on them.

Besides my homer vote of A.W. Mumford Stadium, without a bad seat in the place and even with the track, we are right near the field. We treat visitors right .... until the game starts and that breeze comes off the Mississippi and then you get the true form of the Jaguar Nation if you happen to be wearing the opponent's colors.

I do have to give credit to Jackson State's Memorial Stadium and McNeese's Cowboy Stadium. Both nice venues to watch a game.

I think my favorite outside of the homer pick, is Yale. Went there as a kid with my dad to see a game, lasting impression. Truth be told, I've only seen six different FCS stadiums live during a gameday. Looking forward to seeing more.

If I am a recruit, and I have a choice to play where the Falcons play, or I can play in just a larger version of my H.S. stadium, I know where I would want to play. But we will see about that over the years. The Dome also gives us better opportunities for multimedia, which equals more ways to manage sponsorships. For example look at our gameday promotions

I miss real grass too, but in the long run with the watering requirements it's more environmentally friendly to move to field turf, not to mention it makes the on field graphics look better throughout the season.

A dome makes a certain amount of sense in Atalanta, where August/September games would be brutally hot without the AC, and they are nice when they are filled because they get loud, but when it's less than a quarter filled, it does feel like a big dead space.

The other interesting factor will be how well GSU's team handles cold weather games when and if they start playing in the CAA. Playing more than half of your games in a nice 72 degree dome makes it harder to adjust to a November road game at UMass, UNH, or Maine, especially if you start to throw rain or snow into the mix.

There would be nothing cheap about removing the track and building down. Underneath the field is a lot of rock that's much harder to remove then dirt. Probably would require some blasting and some big time heavy machinary to get it out of there. While most fans agree that they'd like to see this done, no one can answer where they'd put the new track. ASU's track and field team deserves a top notch facility as they consistently compete for the title year in and year out in both men and womens. It's not like App has a lot of flat land around campus to build a quality track and field facility. I'd love for the fans to be more on top of the action but until someone can tell me where a new track can be built and show me the money to dig the football field and track up, I'm good with where it is for now.

Though Princeton is new...the facility is really nice and still kept the Palmer Field look with the exterior. Great place to watch a game, and the field itself is excellent.

Solidiers Field, now Harvard Stadium, is a great place to watch a game, though you do need a seat cushion. The open end zone is now the site of a building/field house, though for many years steel/wooden stands sat there, boosting the capacity to about 53,000.

In addition, a lot of people don't remember that Memorial Stadium at Bucknell has capacity of 20,000 at one time through the mid 1970's. Didn't the old Fisher Field at Lafayette also have a much larger potential capacity, say up around 22,000?

As for other stadiums, I haven't watched a game there, but I was over by the Richmond campus the other day and I really like the Spiders' new stadium. They did a great job blending it with the rest of campus.

In addition, a lot of people don't remember that Memorial Stadium at Bucknell has capacity of 20,000 at one time through the mid 1970's. Didn't the old Fisher Field at Lafayette also have a much larger potential capacity, say up around 22,000?

The first time i visited Bucknell for a football game was 1989. Their stadium was a dump at that time but it was still a full horseshoe. By the time i returned in 1991 the place had been renovated and about 5-6k seats were removed and replaced by the Bucknell flower garden. Did they rename it Christy Matthewson after the renovations?

I like Finely when App St. is there playing for the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. It is packed and rockin. If App is not in the Championship game it is a ghost town. I will miss it.

Granted I dont know where the plane fits in, but I have no attitude. It is about FCS stadiums and that is our stadium even if it is leased from the State of Georgia. So lets not start another unecessary Statesboro concocted fight.

I still can't believe the attitude coming from the fans of a program that has yet to actually accomplish anything. The thread is about FCS stadiums, not rented multipurpose facilities or "specially painted" airplanes. The problem people have with you is your insistence on being worshipped when you haven't proven anything yet. If we can please stop derailing the thread and get back to the intended discussion, that would be great.

The Georgia Dome is one of the top 3 ish holes in the NFL. Congrats you rent it and can't fill a fifth of it.

Its a wonderful facilty and no we cant fil it. But there is no other stadium in town that will hold 18k to 30k. Personally I love it.

I've only been to a dozen or so FCS stadia, and about as many BCS venues, but Harvard Stadium is definitely my favorite game experience. It's especially awe-inspiring if you get to take it in from center field (which I have); it really feels like you're in the Coliseum or Hippodrome.

After that, I'd take our very own Princeton Stadium over the Yale Bowl, but they're all very nice, especially during a crowded game.

THANK YOU! Sitting, INDOORS, in an empty stadium would depress me. I'd rather stand in 15 degree weather as ice and sleet pound me in the face in Boone anyday. Forget your fancy beer, sneaking in whiskey strapped to your legs is way more fun, and cheaper!...

App State's stadium is in an awesome setting in my opinion...I'm slightly bias though because I visit Boone about twice a year and love it up there.

While I'm with you on standing in 15 degrees with frozen stuff hitting my face while going crazy at a football game...having an outdoor stadium would probably only hurt our attendance for the first few years. At first I was completely against the GA Dome but considering the other options it's our best one. Now that I've been to 5 home games I can say that it is a "nice" place to watch a game. It's louder than you would think and it's a very comfortable game experience. I'll tell you, with the heat we've had, it's been nice to go from sweating in the tailgate lot to 72* within 10 minutes!

Reason I say outdoors would hurt our attendance is because our fans/students are infants right now (as far as being college football fans) and I doubt we'd have more than 1,000 students show up in 56* rainy weather. We don't have tradition established however it's building with every home game. Also, with each new incoming freshman class it will get exponentially stronger. I'd like to see us have an open air stadium at some point down the road but I'm not sure where we'd build it. I know Georgia State owns a fair amount of property that is being unused (for university purposes) right now but don't know if a stadium is doable on any of the sites. If it meant the stadium would be further off campus I would be against it. The Dome is pretty close to our campus.

As for some of our fans thinking we own the FCS world before we have a season under our belts...sorry, I know there were some diehard fans born on the day they announced we would be fielding a team, I'm one of them. Just ignore them and know we're not all that cocky.
