SHSU has score to settle...

After an open date this weekend, the Sam Houston football team travels north Saturday for the team's second road game of the 2010 schedule as they face the Western Illinois Leathernecks at Macomb, Ill. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

More than half of this year's Bearkat football squad weren't part of the Sam Houston program last September when WIU visited Bowers Stadium to open the 2009 season for both teams. But the 28 players who played in that contest can tell them it was a battle that literally went down to the final gun, and then some.

The game was in doubt until the final play as Sam Houston drove to the one yard line with 21 second to go but the Leathernecks stopped the Bearkats on three straight plays. Blake Joseph's pass from the three for Jason Madkins in the end zone with no time remaining after a penalty fell short.

Huntsville Item: Bearkats Have Their Hands Full

HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats never really recovered from last year’s season-opening loss to Western Illinois.

A dominant running team, the Leathernecks marched into Bowers Stadium and put on an impressive aerial display on the way to a 35-28 victory over Sam Houston.

Houstonian: Kats ready for payback at WIU

The Sam Houston State football team will travel to Macomb, Ill., this weekend with a score to settle.

Last season, the Bearkat football team hosted the Western Illinois Leathernecks for the 2009 season-opener at Bowers Stadium. In a game that went back and forth, the result came down to the final drive of the game.

Just got in - have not checked the specifics, but it is apparent that SHSU has a long way to go...

I've been worried about the QB situation with Randolph, Sprowls or anyone not named Rollison under center. Tyrik suffered an injury and it is going to be a long year for SHSU, simple as that. QBs make all the difference in the world at the FCS level as we all know in the SLC and SHSU does not have a QB up to 'snuff'.

Analyzing box...

SHSU is a running team! 48 carries for 214 yards or an average of 4.5 ypc. Not bad. Star of the running game was Tim Flanders (23 carries, 156 yards or 6.8 ypc).

THREE different QBs got in - Bell, Sprowls and Randolph. Randolph was starter coming in with Sprowls back-up. Bell is true fish. He was 4-of-12 with 1 INT, 75 Yards.

Both teams punted 7 times. Must be fast action because there were TONS of yards. 5 yards shy of 900 combined, I believe.

SHSU is a good team, should be .500 in the Southland.

Yikes, SDSU ranked real high, am i right, they have averaged 1.5 points per game so far.

Also, UNI can't handle the SFA fast attack offense, WIU over-reacted last year and fired their coach after losing to SFA.

any fireings going on at Cedar Falls?

Pre season polls? two words, "*****...please"

So are you saying UNI shouldn't be ranked because they lost to top 10 team by 2 points while turning the ball over in the redzone three times?

Just curious. BTW I am impressed with WIU so far, but need to see a little more to tell me they are a true contender. Congrats on the win Leathernecks!

Isn't WIU a middle of the road MVFC team? How can SHSU be .500 in the SLC when we lost to you by a lot (even if impossible to be .500 due to seven games)...???

No, brother, my rankings mini rant, was more directed two fold that WIU had a meltdown last year when we lost to SFA (by the way we grabed up the OC from Arkansas State that instistuted his version of fast attack O)

These silly polls don't engage much real eyes on info, everthing is a year late, or as was posted earlier based on "legacy programs"

NO slight on UNI, you guys own us.

hey with regard to the SHSU being .500

I liked what I saw the first half. Understand this, WIU in the past has been known as a "Football School"

Last year, was hard on real hard on the players, coaches, and fans

I can not substantiate my next observations, but I heard that spring practice and twoadays were BRUTAL.

I am so happy that we are healthy for a change.

random comment, I saw/heard a guy in tailgating walking through sporadically banging on a cowbell,

I yelled as loud as I could "more cowbell" it sounds good just "more cowbell" I thought I was being supportive and funny, the guy didn't get it. WTF no BOC love?

Post-game write-up from the Huntsville Item...

MACOMB, Ill. — Just when it looked like the light was beginning to turn on for a young Bearkats squad, Western Illinois flipped off the switch.

The Leathernecks assaulted the end zone from the ground and through the air and used three third-quarter scores to start the second half to turn what was once a close game into a runaway.

Senior Matt Barr tied a career-high with three touchdown passes and set a school record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 125 as Western Illinois routed Sam Houston State 56-14 Saturday afternoon at Hanson Field.

“I thought this was a game we could have easily scored 35 points, we just couldn’t sustain any drives in the second half,” Kats head coach Willie Fritz said.
