W&M still gets a first place vote?

William and Mary drops 7 spots for playing and losing to a conference foe. Villanova loses to a FBS team that is ranked below 10 I-AA teams including UMass (Sagarin). And get to stay close to the top?

Yeah, that's what happens when you lost to an unranked FCS team. Nova are defending champs, #1, and playing an FBS team. While they were expected to keep it close, noone really expected them to win, per se. Plus, Nova has less question marks than William and Mary, so the reaction to W&M's loss is more profound.

Also, ASU almost lost to a conference foe who has been mediocre, at best, the last few years, and stays put. So, you shouldn't be complaining.

Once again the voters screwed up by voting W&M ahead of UMass and the person who voted us #1 should be banned from voting again.

People really need to ignore their pre-season picks when making their picks for week 1.

That was giving the Colonial their due respect. Saying the Colonial is much better than an average FBS team. I expected Villanova, last years champion to beat them. I don't see W&M losing to the depth of the Colonial as big a fall in ratings.

I don't think I mentioned the size of wins nor complaining, because they are still a win. If that was a problem then Montana beating the Western St would be in question. But if you want to say your conference wasn't expected to win.... OK.

I think most of them deserved it, but every single MVFC team received at least 3 votes including Indiana State. That is quite surprising. I mean the four ranked probably deserve to be and MSU and Illinois State should be getting votes, but YSU, Indiana State, and WIU probably do not.

Old SOuth - Out of curiosity, where do you think UMass, W&M, and Nova should each be ranked? Remember that pre-season rankings are arbitrary since nobody has seen anyone else play. A big change in rankings from preseason to Week 1 makes sense because you actually can see how the teams performed. I know I moved a number of teams a lot based on what I saw from this past week.

Had Nova at 4, W&M at 8 and Umass at 12. Only reason Umass wasn't ahead of W&M was they get some credit for last years results.

Lamar plays their first game in 21 years and they are already receiving votes!! Go LU!!

Don't things like Sagarin give the home team three or points when determing spreads? Based on that the UMass-W&M result is basically a wash other than giving UMass the push because they won. And UMass is very good at home. I don't think W&M should be penalized too significantly for this loss.

Wouldn't lose too much sleep over any of the first week polls as I have a feeling things will be much clearer come the first week of October.

I don't begrudge W&M their higher ranking, but whoever gave them a first place vote needs to be sequestered before he/she ruins the credibility of the poll.

How on earth does Colgate fall three spots, and Holy Cross and Penn drop out of the poll? The SN poll has officially become some sort of joke, right? It has to be?
